I understand what you are saying but you will not hear it from Lungbuster. My team was out before the region. lol I am thinking Jack Cupp. A great ref in the late 70's early 80's. Time seems to go around in circles anymore so I might be off a tad. I happen to see him at a North Laurel game back a few years ago. Someone told me he had been the AD at one of those schools. I am thinking he retired maybe 6 or 7 years ago? He was known as WALKING TALL in my neck of the woods. You always new you had a good one when you seen him on the court.

Basketball is a game of skill. I have watched many games over the years in the 13th and it seems like MANY of the refs want to still the show. I go to watch the kids play the game of basketball and not to see a ref put on a show. Its about the 17 and 18 year olds not about the refs. That is why I said put the whistle in the pocket, I didn't mean for it to turn out like a hockey game. Call what needs to be called and let the rest go. The players should decide the outcome not an official making a call so he can run to center court to be seen. They need to reguire them to watch Mr. Cupp call a game from some old film. He called it straight up, took no mouth and let the players determine the game. JMHO.

Hopefully, they will let them play and let them decide the outcome. Put the whistle in your pockets and play ball. IMO the 13th got the better end of the stick because our refs went somewhere else. lol:flame:

I couldn't agree more. For whatever reason the tank was empty coming around the final turn. Talking about fatigue, South has the advantage going into the finals.

:dancingpa Never has been able to sit still. I remember watching him as a young kid playing ball throughout Harlan County. I seen him more than a few times with his Uncles as they were always fishing. Billy and or one of his Brothers and Jim could be seen at the lakes or in the rivers often. Jim even swallowed a fish hook one time while on a trip down the poor fork of the Cumberland River. Then and there he gave new meaning to taking it hook, line and sinker. True story and was even in the Harlan Daily Surprise back probably around 1984 or so.:dancingpa

What would really be nice is if someone could list the names of the studs from each of those years. A few names to go along with the School would be very interesting especially the early years.:flame:

I agree with this. Another thing to mention I think as more important than the style of defense is their turnover ratio. Running the veer can be brutal both ways. I would guess that many of those loses listed above had a lot to do with the offense turning the ball over. When Middlesboro doesn't turn it over they are pretty good regardless of the defense they play.:flame:

I don't like the defense myself, but when you have athletes or are playing inferior competition it really doesn't matter one way or the other. He could of run a basketball defense and won. Also, the year Belfry beat them I really don't think the kind of defense they ran had much to do with it. However, if you are knocking his defense because he runs it against run teams, well that is the point. The logic behind the scheme is to outnumber the offense. So what if a wideout runs off a DB. They still have you outnumbered anyway you add it up. If you can't stop them with 10 what makes you think you can stop them with 11. The defense is awkward I agree but it has a lot more to it than the average fan understands. As long as they have kids to run with the opponent on the outside they will always have you at a disadvantage. Only until teams started using the QB did the yellowjackets begin to have problems. Teams would spread them out and that put the MIKE locked on the QB one on one. Granted, if you could line up and just run between the tackles because you were better ( BELL ) then you would do that. But again against teams like that do you really think a different Defense would of changed the outcome? Maybe maybe not.

Nobody seemed to mind when they won the state doing this? I don't like it myself but it does create problems. The junk defense or press, whatever you want to call it can work as they proved it in years past. I would like it a lot better if they played more zone but Roark IMO knows what he is doing. Look at his overall record and then question him.

I have been for Hensley on this Job the entire time. I really think the two would be a good fit. However, I agree if Hensley is going to stay in the coaching profession he had better stay and lead Pikeville to some success. The Natives are getting restless with all this jumping and applying and all that. Hensley needs to take the Job and prove himself not only for Pikeville but also for Hensley. JMO I know a rumor is a rumor but from the coalfields of Harlan County and Hensley's roots way up in Blackstar, the word is He will be a Pikeville Panther!

:thumb: :thumb: I think the biggest thing to look for when wondering how good your coach is, is to look at defense. Cumberland plays great defense and I also think the coaches do a good job. Yeah, they need to listen to me because I haven't lost a game coaching from the stands. lol Good luck Skins.

I am glad to hear that all Pike Schools offer a good education. Pikeville scores higher than JC in testing because they should. What JC is doing on the part of Education is really a great accomplishment. Private schools who give entrance exams and all that should score higher IMO because they have some of the better students or they wouldn't be at the school without a lot of red tape the publics have. The Ind. school district is much on the same line. They have the students within the boundaries and then pick and choose between the best and brightest students from within the county school system. JC is educating ALL students within their boundaries and must take any and all. I think with such a large pop. and all students regardless they are doing great things. JMO.

I agree that Bell had a nice game plan and executed it pretty good. The PG from Cumberland IMO is a good ball player. He handles the ball well and can run the team. He is an outstanding defensive player and I like his intensity. I wouldn't care a bit to have him as PG on my team. All I was saying is that I would tweak his game to attack the basket more and then do it more and then continue to do it some more. I think Cumberland from 1 thru 6 are as good as anyone in the region. Cumberland, Middlesboro and Jackson Co. are very talented. Again, just my opinion.

I wanted to see Cumberland win just as bad as anyone. However, I didn't see Johnson in the post 80% of the time. If people are going to double and Triple team the blocks as you say, then at least two people are not guarded on the outside. Why not just stand their and make them guard you out on the floor. When and if they do feed the post. If they don't win the game 2 to 0. Cumberland IMO tries to feed the post and then will just settle for the outside shot. In high school basketball, you have to attack the basket, then attack the basket some more and get to the foul line. Thats why 90% of the time a team with a good point guard can carry a team to big wins. Now, I am not a coach but boy it is easy to sit in the stands and second guess your team. I just think Cumberland didn't play very well that night. Hopefully, the can come back and make a run at this region crown. Go Skins!
