  1. I wouldn't classify that as strategy. I doubt anyone associated with the current football program did that. Now it could have been a FORMER player who is still sour over getting beat by Dville. That's my guess...
  2. I kinda chuckle at "maybe the fastest team MF has ever had"....I'm sure someone expressed this to you as their opinion, but they must have a kid on the team, otherwise I don't think they would have said that. MF has really good team speed for sure, but they are like most MF teams. They have kids that buy in to the team mentality, and Mayfield ALWAYS squeezes more potential and success out of less talent than almost any team across the state. If football were a beauty contest, MF would never be a champ. Hard nosed, blue collar, and a Never-Say-Die attitude.
  3. Agree completely. MF did a great job moving the chains with him and RB Matthews. They both run tough. Line blocked well too. I honestly think the MF coaching staff looks at where the opponents’ defense is vulnerble and gameplan the QB position accordingly. That’s the impression I get anyway.
  4. It was a big scoring opportunity that could have swung the momentum and outcome. After watching Desales in 2015 and CAL this year (I missed the playoff matchup last year), it will be a slugfest no matter who Mayfield plays.
  5. My opinion after the Owensboro Catholic game (I was not impressed with OC/MF’s 40 points was very VANILLA) was that MF didn’t tackle well enough, or run the football well enough, to beat CAL tonight. Well they did exactly that. This time of year, running the football well and playing stellar Defense is a recipe for a championship. I know Danville will be ready. They got me my last high school game.
  6. There was one play, flag route from the slot, he would have surely scored...but he dropped it.
  7. Mayfield matches up much better against speed, as opposed to smash mouth. The last two games they have really shown a penchant for taking what the defense gives them. Defensively, they have found the other teams’ biggest threat, and for the most part, neutralized it. They can land punches, and more importantly, take a lick and come right back. They could be undefeated. Corbin won by 3...and by all accounts, Mayfield didnt look their best that night (I make 4 or 5 reg season games a year. Usually the better matchups). But playing a good team can do that to you.
  8. Lots of momentum swings in this one. CAL fumbles on their first play, MF players indicate a recovery, and the refs still give CAL the ball. Next play their RB takes it to the house. At that point I thought it would be extremely difficult for MF to recover. But they did a great job running the ball, and their D played great, with the exception of losing containment on the CAL QB for a few first downs. Maybe someone could enlighten me, but #3 was supposedly the best player on the field, why did he get so few touches??? I counted two receptions, and some decent special team returns, but no carries. If I have a player that talented, I'm finding more ways to get him the ball. He actually didn't appear to be well conditioned. There were quite a few plays where he looked gassed. MF showed a lot of guts tonight. Let's hope they can keep it rolling.
  9. Clear skies. High of 60. Low of 40. 10 mph wind. No chance of precipitation.
  10. I would be more confident if MF were shutting down prolific offenses. I thought their performance against Corbin was great (except for the encroachment penalties and the two 40 yard TDs). They just couldn't score in that game. I hope I'm wrong, because I'd like to see Mayfield win it all. I will be there Friday night for sure. Gonna be a great one.
  11. Yes, I understand the concept of 11 hats to the football. The mark of a good, solid defense is making one on one tackles. It shouldn't take 5 defenders to bring a guy down. I just think thats been a trend with MF this year. Yes, I agree they do a good job swarming the ball.
  12. I know next to nothing about CAL, except I keep hearing about the Wright kid. I have said all along, I don't think MF runs the ball well enough, or tackles well enough to win at this stage. MF ran the ball really well last week, so if they can keep that up, their odds of winning obviously go up. They still missed LOTS of tackles last week, and the first defender to the ball rarely brings down the ball carrier (IMO). I will also note that MF's kicker has looked particularly good lately, and they are playing at home, so those are positives. I still see something like 35-28 CAL. I think MF will score, I just don't know how their D will hold up.
  13. I think the endzone parking is unique as well. Not many other schools have that, and it makes for a great experience (plus it raises money for booster club). Just another part of the tradition at MF.
  14. It was a very vanilla 40-7 score. I think it was only 13-7 at halftime?? Second half MF came out and ran the ball well. OC couldn't get anything going on offense all night long. #11 for OC had a nice receiving TD, but then promptly went over to MF endzone fans wagging his finger and running his mouth. I'd say that lit a fire under the collective rear ends of MF players and fans. OC had a tough ball club, very gritty and didn't quit. As far as the bad blood, I'm sure OC is tired of loosing to MF, and I think MF fans might have been rubbing that in a little. The next few years in this series should be interesting, provided OC and MF can continue to make it to the Regional CC.
  15. I think that OC didn't meet their own (or others) expectations this year, but here they are in the third round with another ballgame to play, so the past is irrelevant. They might not be as good as the last two years, but I have a feeling they will be hungry and give Mayfield all they want. I have seen Mayfield play a handful of games this year. From my perspective, they aren't physical enough to win it all. They don't run the ball very well (at least not like they did during their insane 4 peat stretch), and they don't tackle very well either. I see this as their downfall. The only exception is #16. He does it all, and is a MVP player that is the lifeblood of the team. I don't think OC has the horses to hang with Mayfield for 4 quarters. Somebody already predicted 35-21. I think a two touchdown game sounds about right.
  16. I agree. It doesn't say much about a teams confidence running those types of plays.
  17. And as far as the "trick" play goes....no excuses....champions don't miss details like that. Mayfield should know that as well as anyone.
  18. I liked the venue. Great place for a game. Corbin passed the eyeball test in the pre-game warmups. Good looking team. Nice size. As noted earlier, Corbin seemed to have more mojo in this game. They played with a lot of intensity. Their redzone defense earned them the win in this one. Their offense wasn't anything special, but it doesn't have to be when your three scores are pass plays of 40+ yards. I had to eat my words in this game. I said Mayfield needed to make the QB throw to win instead of letting him run, and he certainly won the game with his arm. I have watched Mayfield sporadically over the last 8 years or so, and I don't recall ever seeing them play that sloppy of a game. I also don't recall letting the big play beat them, especially not more than once in a game. Overall, way too many stupid penalties and mistakes (playing a solid ball club like Corbin will cause more of those). I also think not being able to run the ball really hurt Mayfield, and while I think (Stinson?) will be a good QB before its all said and done, I don't think its fair to ask him to win the game with his arm. He played a good game for the most part, but tried to squeeze in some tight throws that got picked, and took a sack on that last drive when he had an opportunity to throw the ball away. Mayfield's body language almost made it seem like they thought all they had to do was show up to win. Not much intesity, or at least not as much as Corbin. I think Mayfield needed a little humble pie, and this loss will serve them well by reminding them they still have work to do if they want to add to their jewelry collection. Overall, considering how the game went, and losing by 3, but it taking 3 plays of 40+ yards to beat them, Mayfield can still walk away from this game seeing positives. Clean up those big plays and you presumably win the ballgame. They played tough, just couldn't finish it out. I hope they keep this series going. Corbin is a great measuring stick for Mayfield, and vice versa.
  19. I always thought neck rolls were more about stinger prevention. I don't think they helped any with concussions.
  20. "The wolf does not concern himself with the opinions of the sheep".....
  21. Any football fan with half a brain knew after the Union City game that wasn't a good measuring stick. They were overrated and way more vanilla than any team mayfield will face in the later rounds of the playoffs. As far as competition left on the schedule....McCracken and Graves are long shots but always get up for Mayfield. If Caldwell can get their offense in gear they will give Mayfield all they can handle, and I think Corbin beats Mayfield (The only advantage MF has in that matchup is less travel time). To say they won't see a tough game before later in the playoffs is silly. You are out of your element, Donny...
  22. I also like the Crittenden guy that constantly surfs Mayfield threads looking to make snarky comments. Inferiority complex much? I would be tired of Mayfield too if I were you.
  23. Murray State would have been stupid not to sign this kid. I was also surprised they didn't show interest sooner. He is a football player, plain and simple. Will do whatever it takes to be on the field and WIN.
  24. What do you expect? Every fan base has knuckleheads. And your last two sentences are a direct reflection of the mentality of winning programs. I'm sure people say the same thing about belfry or bowling green. That's probably why they are dominant. Trust me, I have been waiting for Mayfield to be dethroned but nobody has been up to the challenge.
