Updates on R2D4
I think it should be noted for the record that Open Enrollment is only available until the racial quota has been met. Doesnt quite make sense that its called open enrollment but then it's closed enrollment once the required percentages have been met. Then you have to find somewhere else to go. Hows that make sense?

Updates on R2D4
Here we are, only a few months away from the start of the 06 season and here's what I've seen and/or know so far... Male is taking their high octane offense to the passing league/tournament at Notre Dame this year going up against some of the best Pennsylvania, Indiana & Ohio have to offer...offense is looking pretty sharp and of couse, Beaumont is looking as good as expected. Justin Green is also looking outstanding and is looking like he is going to be giving some defenses some problems this year (as expected)... Manual: No new updates yet, havent had a chance to check them out St. X- Kids look stronger than ever QB is extremely accurate. Not much has changed with this team but they are looking really good. PRP- Chris Wolfe has this team focused and has a lot of numbers out this year. Lineman are big, quick and receivers and running backs are looking solid. Lot of potential playmakers on this team. Iroquois- Visited Grant Co. for a 7 on 7 matchup on Tuesday. Numbers are decent but the word is there is no talent behind the starters. Also learned that QB Mike Marshall, a young man who came to the Raiders with a lot of expectations of turning around a team is INELIGIBLE. Terrible blow to Iroquois. QB is now Marquise McCAffey. Strong sprinter with decent arm. Spoke to Off. Coordinator's dad tonight and he said they looked pretty good. Starting unit scored on 6 of 7 possessions including 3 TDs that went for 50 yards or more. Said Defense is learning new scheme and struggled against Grant Co. Should be interesting to see what happens this year if linemen hold up. Butler-No news as of today but am planning on watching them next Tuesday.

New football playoff format would pit Louisville schools...
I would just like to state that I think that this is an interesting format. Having followed 4-A most of my life, I personally believe that in order to be the best...you have to play the best...and Im not just referring to playing better and tougher competition, but I am also referring to a team must personally play their best each week to be the best. My feeling in all this is that if you are going to win the state championship, you have to be ready to play every game. Its that simple. If you go out and beat St. X, Trinity & Male to make it to the Semis and then get beat by someone like South Laurel, or whoever...then so be it. That night...you werent the best. Games are not won on paper or in forums or in barber shop meetings. Games are won on the fields. Just like it could easily be argued that the Confederacy should have beaten the Union Army because they had a better general, or better equipment, or whatever. But in the end...they didnt win. Likewise, football is about preparing for every night...from the coaches who have to make adjustments, to players who have to prepare physically and mentally to play. Winners rise above adversity and plow through woods...losers take the easy road and make excuses. I believe that it would be nice to see for a few years at least...the best of Louisville take on the best of the state. And I am sorry...I am a Louisville guy...but I think it has to be remembered...this is a STATE championship...not a Louisville Championship. I think the Louisville schools should battle it out...take the winner and let them take on the rest. Its not right to make the schedule adjust just because Louisville has 20+ 4-A schools and everyone else doesnt. Take the best of louisville and let them play the rest and hopefully they will represent us well. If not...well, then someone else was better. Bottom line is....state champioships are for the kids, the players, the athletes. They dont care how much money goes into the gate. If this were about money...i would stop watching high school football. This HAS to be about whats fair and right for ALL athletes. They are ones playing the game...not the ADs and boosters and KHSAA board.

Question about passing league
Although there are some slight variations depending on the host school or league, in general, the passing league consists of a 7 on 7 format. Usually the offense has up to 5 receivers (running backs can be used to come out of backfield in most cases), a QB and some use centers to snap the ball (though many leagues do not require it). The defense plays 7 players consisting of DBs, Safeties & Linebackers. Some leagues will use flags, others simply use a two-hand touch rule for tackle. The QB will usually have a time limit in regards to how long he is allowed to have before he must get rid of the ball or it will be considered a "sack" if he fails to get the pass off in the allotted time. I have seen leagues use a maximum of 4 seconds to 7 seconds. Again, it just depends on the host. Most leagues require a huddle, although I have seen some who only allow a two-minute drill style, no-huddle formation during the last two minutes of each half. Quarter lengths have varied from 5 minutes to 8 minutes all the way to a full 12 minutes with no clock stopping except in last two minutes...again it depends on the host. As for exta points, some leagues simply said a TD equals 7 points, some say 6 and you must go for two, others have even allowed a kicker to kick an extra point (with no defense). Those are just some of the general rules...you can contact a lot of colleges & high schools who host 7 on 7 leagues and get their rules.

Fairdale's new stadium -state funding
This has been a pretty interesting debate. I dont pretend to know everything...BUT...i think there should be some clarification on this whole Male thing in regards to their enrollment policies. A few years ago, you will recall that Male had a major crop of talent coming in and out of their halls and out on the football fields. For those who pay CLOSE attention, the overall talent is starting to dwindle. Anyone want to take a guess why? The reason is (and you can call Bob Redman and ask him): There were some "private" schools in kentucky who raised enough complaints of an unfair advantage that Male could take students who did not previously live in Jefferson Co and go to Male (Anyone remember Tony Driver?). Yes, some public schools complained...but they have been doing that for years but nothing was ever done. (Weird, isnt it?) So now...the new rule states that Male can not take any student in that is not already enrolled in the traditional program. So Male doesnt have the "pick" of the litter anymore...the enrollment rules dont apply as they used to and the playing field has been leveled.....YEAH RIGHT!

Slide rule in high school baseball?
Allow me to respond as an umpire: If a player catches the ball and takes 100 steps and then drops the ball...the runner is not out. However, 100% of the umpires will not make a call like this. But the true ruling is that the fielder must be in the act of attempting to make a throw, thus releasing the ball from his glove, in order for the rule to be made that the fielder made an actual catch. This is why you will often see coaches argue that a defender dropped a ball when attempting to turn a double play but if he had posession of the ball when he stepped on the bag and then was attempting to transfer the ball from his glove to his throwing hand and then drops it, the runner is still out. As for the sliding rule issue...there is no mandatory sliding rule, however, as one poster correctly stated, there can be no malicious intent by the runner to cause injury or inflict bodily damage, nor intent to dislodge the ball OR INTERFERE WITH A FIELDER ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A PLAY. This is especially true when runners dont slide into second on a double play but stand up and impede the fielder's attempt to complete a throw to another base. Most coaches are smart enough to teach their players to slide because they dont want to risk an interference call (which would result in the batter-runner being called out automatically at 1st) and why risk an automatic 2 outs when you may only have to give up 1 out. You will also see many runners at home slow up when they are about to tagged out by the catcher but no automatic call is made. That is because it is legal. Mandatory slide rules are USUALLY only in place in Little League or Babe Ruth leagues (and other recreational leagues) in which the ruling is an automatic out if the runner does not slide if a play is about to be made on them. Any malicious contact (per the judgment of the umpire) results in automatic ejection from the game. And it is correct about jumping...the only jumping allowed is when a fielder is lying on the ground and the runner has no other recourse but to jump over the fielder to continue his path.

What is going on at CovCath?
I think people need to realize that when a coach interviews (or any person interviewing for any job) is going to say the things they think the committe wants to hear. There is no one who would get hired saying "Well i think I would like to coach for one year and then return to Ohio if a possibility opens up". So the coach probably never gave any indication that he was only intending to stay for a year or so. But I dont know since I wasnt in the meeting. My feeling is that if your a coach and you have no business applying for any job that you dont honestly expect to stay at for at least 3 years. Its only the respectable thing to do. Thats just slapping the program in the face wanting to go to a place only to have ambitions of leaving as soon as the next best looking train rolls through. DOnt get me wrong, I think everyone has a right to better themselves and go the best place they feel is possible...but its hard to bash a coach from the beginning when you know that he simply just said what he thought was needed to say to get the job. Yes, maybe the expectations were different for the coach and they didnt pan out the way he would have liked, but nevertheless, no coach is going to get a job being so honest to say they are only there until something better comes along the following year or two. I doubt that even a good coach like Bob Redman or Glasier would get a job telling a hiring committee that they will only stay until a better job opens up. You lay out your plans, your philosophies and ideas and if the committee likes them then they get hired. No person doing any hiring should ever hire anyone that doesnt give the impression that they will only be around for a year or two. Otherwise they dont need to be on the hiring committee. In summary, im sure the coach said he planned on being around a while but as we all know and have seen, ANYTHING is possible after that first year. My judgment on the situation is still open. Whatever happens, lets just hope CCH remains successful...after all...its not about the coach...its about the guys who suit up and play!

What role should players have in chosing a head coach?
This is kind of an interesting debate and I have enjoyed reading some of the posts on here. THere are some really good arguments both for and against. The only thing I have to say is if players want to rally behind an assistant coach that they feel confident in then they should at least be heard. The hiring council can put whatever weight they want to on it, but at least the players had an opportunity. Since they are the ones who have to go out there and play and work for the coach, it should stand to reason that they should at least be able to support an assistant who is interested. However, if no assistant applies, then its kind of a moot point for them to do so since they probably have no idea what kind of coach the applicants are anyway (unless they know the coach from another team from playing them or something). My personal problem with the way many councils hire is that too many times I have seen good coaches passed on because of the old practice of "its not what you know...its WHO you know". Principals far too often hire people they know from previous schools or friendships without really considering what is truly best for the program itself. I have often found that the principal and AD who dont have strong commitments to the athletic programs are often looking for the coach who will be "yes men", if you will. Guys who will not cause problems or spend too much money. I dont know if there will ever be an ideal scenario that can be modeled by all schools, but a hiring committee should consist of the Principal, the AD, a teacher, an athletic booster (if any exist) and a member of the student council. Ultimately, the decision should be based soley on qualifications with a vote by the committee as a whole, not just left up to one person (usually the Principal) to make that choice. The more people involved, the better. Parents should not be involved in the decision making because it often times results in that parent thinking about his/her child and not the team.

Justin Green Cleared to Play at Male
Just found out this week that Justin Green of Male has been cleared to play football. For those who may remember, Justin (Younger brother of Ohio State's Marcus Green) suffered a massive injury during a JV game against Butler that almost left him paralyzed. He got fitted for a special helmet at Ohio State and will be back in 2006. This makes for a great threat to take away some of the pressure and focus by defensive coaches on Beaumont. Green has been seen as being faster and "potentially" better than Beaumont. THis will certainly give coach Redman another dangerous weapon in his offense. At any rate, glad to see he is ok and can still play...good luck Bulldogs.

Vic Anderson...
QB Patrick White & RB Steve Slaton will both be Sophomores. Back up QB is Dwayne Thompson will be a Junior Back up RB Pernell Williams will be a Junior. A LOT OF YOUTH on this team that went 10-1 last year. Im sure Vic will get some boos when the Mountaineers come to Louisville next year. I think he will be good for that offense too. Spread Attack with a lot of option and short pass plays (especially to RBs) will allow Anderson to showcase. However, WV has also signed 4 other RBs the same caliber as Anderson so he will have his work cut out for him. GOOD LUCK & CONGRATS Look for WV to be a pre-season top 5 team with all that talent. Defense is loaded with returning players too.

Should High School replace their goalpost?
I would have to agree with the poster (i forgot who I dont have time to go back and look who said it) that it really isnt worth the money for the schools that cant really afford them. The money really ought to be spent more towards upgrading turf, field, stands, facilities, etc before replacing goal posts, especially for those teams that dont kick extra points, let alone dont even have a field goal kicker. Seeing that I am a follower of the r2d4 crowd, I know that a team like Iroquois hasnt attempted an extra point in years and its not like they need to with their team being down 50-6 to Male, Manual, X etc. Rumor has it that they are going to be spending about 10 grand this year to put Bermuda on their field this summer and I for one think that is a better investment for them than putting in new goal posts. If the school can afford it and has nothing else to do with $10,000, then yeah, its a great upgrade. But when it comes to looking at priorities with that kind of money, i think most ADs would consider goal posts as a last option rather than an immediate need. If more games were being decided by 3 points or less and this was a legitimate concern on a regular basis, I would say the KHSAA would definately need to look at it. But if this is something that really doesnt occur or effect the outcome of that many games, then its not worth requiring all schools to shell out the money for.

Trinity 2 St.X 1
Did anyone see or know what the heck the happened in the 5th inning??? What did the umpire call? All I saw was the X players come off the field and then go back on. I know X's coach was pretty upset over the call. Did X's shortstop not step on the bag to turn the double play? I dont know if that call affected the ultimate outcome of the game but I do know as close as it was the umpire had a lot of guts to make a gutsy call like that to call the Trinity runner safe on a routine double play. At any rate, 10 innings and a close game the whole way through...awesome game overall...a classic. One for the ages! Way to go Trinity

Update on R2D4
As i have said...i know it was a bold prediction and I knew for a fact that it would generate some conversations (which is why i love this forum). It is so awesome to see the amount of enthusiasm and insight provided by so many people. In regards to everyone's post...I know that Iroquois is an extremely long shot at finishing above even 5th. But I have seen them practice this fall and I just have to say that what I have seen thus far has really impressed me. I know that their defense has been horrible the last few years (or decades if you really want to go that far). But they have added a lot of talent and speed to their defense this year including a lot of transfers from other schools that have really bolstered their defense. The problem right now with Iroquois is can they keep the kids eligible. If they can keep certain athletes on their team eligible the entire year...im serious...LOOK OUT! I know its a gamble...but every year there is just some team that makes a stunning surprise and my vote is Iroquois. And if im wrong..i will be the first to admit that I was WAY off. As for X, Male and the others...Im just not certain Male has that mystique about them anymore. THey have lost so much speed on defense over the years and that is ultimately what hurts them. Offensively yes, they can put points on the board, but what good is that when the opponents are able to match their points? As of right now, im just not convinced that they are going to be better than X this year despite the youth of X. As for PRP I am very impressed with what Wolfe has this year. They looked really good this spring and have a wealth of players to choose from. Their linemen are big and strong, their defense is speedy and get to the ball in hurry and they team tackle. I really believe PRP will make a huge run in this district and will beat Male this year for that 2nd spot. As for Manual, i havent seen them yet but I know they have a lot to replace. I think they will be good just not good enough this year to make a run at the top 2 spots. Butler is a team that I have learned that when a new coach steps into a program, I always give them a slow year the first year to learn the system...that is why I have them down at the bottom. Next year though...Butler will be better and Iroquois will return to the last spot in 07 with no real talent returning in 07. One interesting thing to note in regards to Iroquois: Their first 5 games are against Valley, Shawnee, Atherton, Moore & Central Hardin. Even though the potential is there to start off 5-0, we all know the REAL games start with district play. But a good start can go a long way to boosting confidence into a team that has been viewed as a "scrimmage" game by opposing teams. If they can learn to win and build their confidence going into District play...who knows what can happen. I will agree that those first 5 games are against teams that cant compare to the R2D4 powers...but hey...if I was Coach Thompson, I would be happy even with going 6-4 (with at least one district win) and finishing above 500 after struggling for the last decade to win even 3 games. And even if they dont win any district games they could still be happy at 500. I love this game and I love this District!:jump:

Update on R2D4
Well after a few weeks of talking with coaches, checking out some schools and spring practice and other "inside" information gathering I have to alter my previous predictions for this district... St. X now looks to be the team to beat in this district...nothing changes with X just try and stop them. THey appear to be heading more towards running the ball a lot more this year as they should Anderson in the backfield... PRP is looking really good. QB looks solid and this team is loaded with speed on both sides of the ball. Wint-T offense just allows so many talented athletes to showcase their skills and talents. Male doesnt appear to be as dominant as I expected they would be but I am sure as the fall season approaches things will change. THey are not throwing the ball as much except for their usual screens and quick routes. They are running a lot of option and QB roll outs....Iroquois is loaded with a lot of speed and seniors this year and looks to be a legitimate threat for this district though they are still short of competing with the above 3. I believe they will compete with Butler and Manual but numbers may be an overriding factor. So many players will have to go both ways and that will probably wear them down. Manual still looks good but the overall talent level isnt what Crimson fans will be used to. I look for them to be really good in 2007. Butler is adjusting to a new coach and new system. I havent had a chance to look at them yet but sources tell me they are learning the system fairly quickly but it will be hard to tell until they play some competition. I know its going to seem like a bold call...but if the season were to start this Friday, here is my new prediction for Order of Finish as of today: 1. St. X 2. PRP 3. Male 4. Iroquois 5. Manual 6. Butler

Why is basketball different?
I would like to remind those who "brag" about Trinity holding Alexander to less than 100 yards that the year before, in 1993, when Male won the State Championship, they too, held Alexander to less than 100 yards in the Semi-Final matchup (Actually, the held him to less than 80 yards). So it isnt all about a Private school that accomplished this feat. Although I guess some could argue that Male is as close to Public "Private" school as you can get. Nevertheless, I find it ironic that the C-J never mentioned this fact in their write up.

St. X New football field and Athletic Complex
I think that it is permissable to allow alumni to support booster clubs for individual sports but the problem is with some schools having very little alumni support it would take 20 years for some schools to even be able to think about building/renovating their facilities. And of course by the time 20 years roll around...you know that money will have to towards equipment, uniforms, etc. If you figure that a "good" alumni drive for some schools generates about $2,000....that would mean it would take 5 years to raise just $10,000....and that might put new turf on the field. If nothing else, it would have to come down to doing a little piece at a time. Its a tough deal for schools in Jefferson Co. with little or no support.

St. X New football field and Athletic Complex
I would have to add to this discussion...before people start blasting X & T about their facilities....remember long ago when Male had to relocate to Preston Hwy they built their football field which (at that time) was a Taj Mahal of its day. I remember many public schools were OUTRAGED that they got a new, modern day stadium while all the other schools continued to play in "crap". I could be wrong, but I am willing to guess that since Male is a public school (even though it is a traditional school) that money came from the local and state government. I for one, personally think that each year, the state (or city, or whoever) should kick in enough money to renovate many of the schools busted up stadiums that have become run-down. Not all of it is due to lack of interest...but lack of available funds. As I have said before, what T & X and other private schools do with their money...its up to them. They got it....they spend it. WHen JCPS schools get their money....spend it to upgrade the fields. Dont blame X or T....blame the system...man...blame the system :jump:

Your 2006 Football Preview for your team
I have to agree with Ram on this one. Many kids do go to a school based on athletic performance...just as many kids will also choose to go a school like Manual based on their academic excellence. And its not even all about football. Just ask the kids on Dixie Highway who live in Valley or Doss's district but opt to go to PRP to play for a top baseball program...or even basketball. i dont take offense to being perceived as a X fan. I know the name probably could easily imply this. But Im not an X man. I, too, have seen many good names smeared (whether intentionally or not) and its tough but sometimes that just comes with being a coach I guess. Im sure there are many coaches who could care less what we think anyway. Most of them would probably respond "If you can do better...than you try coaching and lets see how well you do".

Your 2006 Football Preview for your team
First, let me go on record to say that I am not one of those "green boys" assuming you are referring to X & Trinity. Never attended either of those schools nor do i particularly root for them. I am fan of their district...i enjoy watching Male, X, Manual and the rest play and I like watching Fern Creek and Seneca (since they were apart of the orginal district before PRP, Butler and Iroquois were introduced to it). 2nd, dont get me wrong, I hope Redman stays at Male for a long time. I think its great what he has done for them and especially good for the X-Male games. 3rd, When I referred to Chris and the others, I was simply grouping together Those players in reference to their teams and the amount of talent they had surrounding them when they played. All I was merely stating was that nowadays it seems the talent isnt as strong around Beaumont as it was with previous teams. Last, I would never count Male out. They will always be a factor and a threat to be reckoned with every year. See my predictions from earlier in the forum when I have them to finish 1st in the district this year. As for the rumors, I am not one who pays attention to rumors. I just wanted to say that I had heard the same thing but as I mentioned before...I have been hearing that since Bush was there. Truth is...Redman is good for Male and the only thing that truly matters is Redman will leave when he is ready. Whether its next year or 20 years from now. Certainly did not mean to stir up any trouble or concerns. Just putting a few "what ifs" for talk.

Your 2006 Football Preview for your team
Male pretty much has two options at QB...they can use Beaumont but that will pretty much limit them in terms of not being as diverse as usual. Or they can use their JR QB ( i dont know his name off hand) who is a runner too. This kid played a lot of garbage minutes in their early season blow out games last year and he can run the option well. That may give them a better opportunity to use Beaumont at TB or WB. I have also heard the rumors about Redman leaving after Beaumont leaves. The funny thing is...I have been hearing that ever since Bush was a Sophomore HA HA. Who knows. So the next forum question for a later date is: Who could replace Redman at Male?
-
Your 2006 Football Preview for your team
I agree that Male's JV & Freshmen teams havent really panned out the usual successes that Redman is probably accustomed to having in the early and mid 90's. It seems to me that Male is really going through a drought when it comes to overall talent at all positions. Its not like the days when they had a team of Ibn Green, Chris Redman, Chris Pointer, Montrell Jones, Chris Barclay and of course, Mike Bush. Even their defense had a load of talent and speed at all positions. Now it just seems that Male is getting "average" talent at these other positions and have one, maybe two, real talented players (Beaumont). I know that everyone is very high on Justin Green and yes, he is supposed to be another dominant player in the mold of the Killer "B"'s (Beaumont, Barclay and Bush). But the injury he suffered in the JV game against Butler almost took his life and from what Im hearing its up in the air if he will even be able to play football anymore. Even if he does play, one man cant beat X, PRP and Manual. Male will always be tough but I doubt they will ever really return to that status of having an "elite" team as they once did. With each game it just seems to me that they are getting more and more beatable. I truly believe that Male is going to suffer some down years after this season. And as much as I like and respect Bob Redman...I often wonder how much longer before he calls it quits at Male?
-
Your 2006 Football Preview for your team
I expect PRP to a major player this year in this race. As I said before, now that they have a year under Wolfe's system and they had as much success as they did least year (especially against top teams) I am sure they gained many "hidden" athletes that did not play last year. I really look for them to place no lower than 3rd in the district. I think they will beat Manual, Butler and Iroquois, they will give Male a fight (as they did last year) and probably will be very difficult against X. One problem that PRP has had in the past is depth at skill positions. Usually they have struggled against Male, X & Manual because they didnt have key back-ups to give their starters a rest now and then. This year could be different. Im saving my final prediction for the start of season but I do see them as having the ability to knock off either X or Male this year. As for Iroquois, as I said before it does become a numbers game with them. Not to mention that its hard to establish any type of consistency when coaching changes occur every 2-3 years. Coach Thompson appears to be willing to stick around for a few years (this is his 3rd year) and that could help them out a lot. And yes, its true that a certain type of offense is not the answer to everyone's problems but it can help if the kids get excited about it and believe in it. It could just one of the many steps they need to take to improving their situation.

Your 2006 Football Preview for your team
I have received confirmation that it is in fact Larry Williams that is the OC at Iroquois this year. I also realized that his father is actually the same guy who is a good friend of the family. I asked his father if he knew what his son was going to do at Iroquois and he replied: "he's spoken to Bobby (Redman) on several occasions and it appears he is planning to run a variation of our offense but with more receivers. I've been at Male for 13 years and know what we are capable of and if he can get the right kids in place for that offense I dont think many teams in, especially in our district, will realize just how dangerous they are going to be next year. I told Bobby that if they are healthy and eligible when we play them next year we could have some problems with them and Bobby agreed. I didnt think he would ever say that about Iroquois."

Atherton football
I didnt think Gibson was allowed back in Jeff. Co. is he? After that whole mess that occured at Fern Creek I thought he wasnt allowed to return to Head Coaching or teaching. I could be wrong, but that's what i thought.
