Fairdale's new stadium -state funding

Featured Replies

How do you all feel about the $300,000.00 the Commonwealth of Kentucky is giving to Fairdale High School to subsidize the building of a new football stadium with an 8 lane track? I think it's odd that this "community school" (with enrollment from all over Jefferson County) is struggling to raise the $110,000.00 balance to pay for this new "community center". That's how it is referred to in the official state budget according to the Courier-Journal.

The article states the total cost is expected to be $500,000.00 and Fairdale has raised $90,000.00.

My understanding is the Weston family is responsible for the state donation. Son works at Fairdale High and father is the state representantive.

Glad to see it. Great way to use the money. I have no ties there and wished I had the income to help some.

I don't agree with it. I just don't see how it can be justified of using tax dollars in this way. There are 19 other public schools being left out in Jefferson County. It sorta makes the world of haves and have nots grow that much more.

I do commend the folks involved for their efforts. But essentially, they have only raised less than 1/4 of the total. The state gave 300,000 and they boosters have raised 90,000.

Yeah, Fairdale High School, the favored child of Jefferson County...

Why don't you just come out and say it?

'Why can't they be like us and build it themselves?'

Well, there's no 'Fairdale Alumni Assoc.' sponsered races during the Spring Meet, with spectators in the Jockey Club, if you know what I mean.

“The new complex, which will replace an old football stadium, was called a community center in the state legislation.”

I don't think the other state reps would have voted in favor had it been described as a football stadium for Fairdale HS. Now every other public HS in the state should be able to receive $300,000 in state funding.

I believe the way it was sold was that since the facilities are used to a great extent by the community of Fairdale (not just the school), the upgrades were justifiable for state funding. This is similar to the way that Southern High's swimming pool is made available for use by the general public during the summer. Another example are the many ballfields at public schools that are used for non-school league games, etc.

If that is the case, I have no problem with it at all.

From the article:

Weston and Fairdale principal Linda Brown said the project will enable the school to put on more athletic events and also will benefit the South Jefferson County Youth League. The league uses the current field and would be allowed to use the new one, too.

Weston said the school has "always opened up the building and tried to have an open-door policy to students and the community."

That open-door policy will continue with the new sports facility, Brown said.

"This facility gets incredible usage by this whole community," she said. "People who are in the community and their kids and their grandkids are involved in activities here."

Maybe this will lead to other schools in Jefferson County to get help in the future.

I hope so!

I'm against the state funding any entertainment venue that will not ultimately have a positive cash benefit. If it was that important to the community, they should have raised the money themselves. Otherwise, make due with what you have.

02...I am surprised that Manual doesn't have some better facilities?
