Eric Wilson has also recently gone down with a high ankle sprain. Andy Cole is not a point guard, but a starting forward that will be sorely missed. Corey Price has stepped in and has been putting points on the board for Somerset, but they miss Cole's leadership and poise. Eric Wilson, the original starting point guard, will be out for about two-three weeks from now, which has allowed Andy's sophomore brother,John Cole ,to step into the lineup. The Jumpers are deep at the guard position, with Wilson, John Cole, Chip Clay(G/F), Corey Price (G/F), and Ross Deaton (G/F) all able to handle the ball. Losing Andy Cole is very unfortunate, as he is a senior, but this Somerset team is starting to come together in his absence, and are still very, very good.

Somerset 65 Pulaski County 59
jumperfootball replied to shs2005's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
Same antics and bad sportsmanship that caused trouble in last year's game. -
Unless Guess steps up like some of the players of the past few years (Turner,Pennix) I see Danville having a year very similar to this past one. I think this season will be decided on how good Guess decides to be.

John Cole should have a huge year for Somerset. He was ranked all year long in receiving yardage and was only a sophomore this season. He should do much better this year as him and Deaton at quarterback will have matured greatly.

Somerset Vs. Pulaski County Predictions
jumperfootball replied to shs2005's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
Don't know what to say. Somerset is down another starter with Eric Wilson suffering a high ankle sprain against Harrodsburg Tuesday night. I think John Cole will step in nicely though. Jumpers win. -
Who's the team to beat in the mountains in 06

Paintsville and Pikeville will be there to. -
I like NewCath as the favorite, seem to be returning most of their strong points. Vicars is a tough back and the big D-lineman should be the best in the state at his position next year. He is just a beast. :fight: I agree that Danville will be strong next year but I do not see them winning it all. Even if they return some good talent, it will be tough to replace Baughman. Danville won several games this season that they would have lost if not for him taking over games. Mayfield, just don't know enough to make any claims. I guess that I can state the obvious, they should be the best of the West in 1A. Beechwood is Beechwood. Don't see the coaching change affecting them too much, these kids just know how to win. Seem to lose some of their better players but shouldn't have a problem getting kids to fill in for them. I think Holy Cross should have more success next year than this past season. They have managed to consistently compete and I don't see that changing anytime soon. LCA will not be down but I don't see them making a run like they did this past season. They will probably win their district but the North should dominate this region once again. Somerset will not be as good as last year but I still see them as the favorite in the mountains followed by Pikeville and Paintsvile. They return a good quarterback and another GREAT receiver in Cole. Probably not the high octane offense that they had last season but they should still have an attack that will be tough to stop. :bunny:

Top Defense in EKY Next Season?
jumperfootball replied to tcat25's topic in KY Football (High School)
Somerset's defense should be strong next year. We return an inside and an outside linebacker, 3 defensive lineman, and two defensive backs. Not to mention several players that split time with some of our starters this season. The defense definitely did not get hit as hard as the offense. -
I have not seen all the players on the list so I do not mean to disparage anyone. Jimmy Chaffin belongs on this team and the ATHLETE position is a perfect place for him. He truly is a great all around athlete and I for one look forward to seeing him play somewhere in the future. He is a pleasure to play against and to watch. Great job with this BGP team guys, I agree with the other posts that this is the best team put out yet!!!!

Stronger division over that last 10-15 yrs, A or AA

Most of the teams that run the show in 1A now were 2A only about 8 years ago though. -
1A District 7...All District Team
jumperfootball replied to volfan782000's topic in KY Football (High School)
Still, Deaton was on a passing team, Scalf was on a running team. Somerset's season was decided by how well Deaton peformed and I think Lynn Camp was alright as long as their running back's were intact. Congrats to both players though on a great year. -
Things that will change really soon

Somerset Superintendent Wilson Sears' argument goes much deeper than competing in sports. I am not sure of all the basics but Sears' argument is that private school competition in sports is taking away from the ideal of public education because there is a constant desire to compete. I think that with the statistics that he gave the number of private schools in the country has tripled in the last 50 years. And trust me, he definitely does not speak for all of Somerset. :sssh: p.s. Somerset Christian Academy was opened up just a year ago, so we definitely have the possibility of losing kids. -
All-Time KY High School Football Team

If it is Andy he is a senior, his brother John is a sophomore and this will hurt the Jumpers tremendously as Andy is a leader and is the point guard of this team. If this is true it is terrible news and I wish him the best. The Cole boys play with tremendous heart and determination.

A couple of years ago the local media here in Pulaski Co. went all out and voted like 6 or 7 players from this area onto the All-State team. Granted that was a good year for this area but not that good. This year Josh Minton deserved all the accolades he has gotten all year but the local paper today says he has 44 tackles on the season. I am sorry but that is not all state credentials, especially first team. He got voted on name recognition and more deserving players were left off.

I figured at least one Somerset player might make the list.

10%? The majority of the things I heard at the ballgame last night from the other side of the stands were terrible. Not exactly something you would expect from the fans of a religion-affiliated private school. One loud mouth fan on the internet is a whole different thing from a legion of fans in person. -

You would think so...but it's how, rather than where, you play the game. -

First off, my hat's off to a great NCC football team. When it came down to the mental aspects of the game and adjusting to conditions, surface, and referees, NewCath did a better job tonight. I would like to see how this game fair out of a best-of-seven, but it's the playoffs and you only get one shot. Although I believe their fans are somewhat arrogant, I guess that comes with success. However, the players and coaches from NCC aren't so boastful, yet their game and attitudes speak volumes. The intangibles of this football team will have them holding a trophy next Saturday. Second off, congratulations to the Somerset Briar Jumpers on a great season. The juniors from last year were forced to step into leadership roles earlier than they expected with only four seniors last year, on a 5-6 team. They really picked this team up as seniors this year, and have left a legacy. Their teammates will have a lot to work with next year. I think composure and big game experience, or a lack there-of killed us in this one. Like I said earlier, I would like to see how we'd fair in a best-of-seven, but that's not going to happen. Third, Wilson Sears, yes, is very outspoken in his views about separating public and private schools. He may or may not represent the general concensus around here, but his opinion is his own. Just want to clear that up. It's not about who recruits, who is unfairly more talented, or so and so forth. You can put any 22 kids on a field and win games without having the most talent. Fourth, before any else decides to bring the public/private debate up and make Somerset look like complainers, for lack of a better term, please make sure you can spell. ("...in going to be whining") Congratulations to both teams, and good luck to NCC next week. -

Not often that we get best wishes from the Corbin area. Congrats to you guys on finishing your season strong with a lot of adversity around you, and hopefully we can bring a semi-state victory back home.

Is NCC going to win them a State Title ???
jumperfootball replied to The Head Director's topic in KY Football (High School)
Hold on while I review my statement. No I don't believe I said anything about BGP. I said the North, meaning anyone affiliated with NKY football it seems, not mentioning any specific teams. The EKY and SEKY teams get no credit for their achievements, and NKY teams think that they are going to just show up and win. They may win, they may not, I respect NCC as a team, but they better be ready to play.
