Oh boy, Somerset's superintendent in going to be whining now.

NCC played very good on both sides of the ball. Vicars ends up with over 200 yards and 3 TD's rushing. Somerset had some very good team speed, Newell is a very good player but he made a few mental mistakes during punt returns. I wonder what the status of Kiernan will be for next week? Justin Smith made some big plays for the Breds tonight, very solid on defense.

Congratulations to NCC on the win and to Somerset for a great season. Sportz Addict I don't know exactly what you would like me to say--if you look back this morning I picked NCC 35-21 and said I hoped I was wrong. The Breds D is a little better than I thought but I never said Somerset would win this game--just that they were capable if NCC overlooked them. Good luck to NewCath next week--I'd say they'll need it. Should be a great game with Mayfield I would say those two teams will really get up and down the field.

Things we learned tonight:

 

1. When the field starts to freeze and the grass turns to frozen mud, the old dog coach sure knows how to line 'em up and run it down their throat when he has to.

 

2. Despite Kiernan not playing, NCC played well on defense and offense but would sure like to have him back if possible for the state final. NCC is fairly deep on the lines and that showed tonight as others stepped up but any team would like a 6'6" 245 lineman in the QB's sight lines when trying to throw the ball.

 

3. Somerset is better than Lex. Christian although the scores were similar. They spread the field very well and the QB has a nice arm and the backs run hard. It does look like they emphasize the offense over the defense and special teams. They do not field punts and the receivers prefer to stay out of the middle of the field as they try to get one on one coverage on the outside.

 

4. NCC use what I would call a core group (not totally two-way players) with Diehl and Vickers playing offense only but nearly eveyone else plays some offense and some defense.

 

5. Justin Smith was a force on defense and at least had the Somerset QB on the run despite NCC only rushing 3 at times. Vickers had over 200 yards rushing and has enough speed, moves, and put your head down toughness, to cause teams trouble.

Great game NCC has way too many weapons. This game was won without #76 on the line and in my opinion he is about the equivalent of two good linemen. I hope he is ready next week it only gets harder from here. GO BREDS!!!!!!

Congrats to NCC. They played a very solid, turnover-free football game needed to win in the playoffs. One interesting strategy tonight was on NCC punts. It looked like they planned to hit low line drive punts to the side of the field. Somerset never adjusted and NC punts would pick up 20 to 30 extra yards on the roll. I thought it was a masterful game plan and good coaching by NC tonight. Hope you play with that same intensity next week. Good luck Breds and great season for Somerset!

I have no idea why the Jumpers' had their returner so deep to begin with, NCC netted most of their punting yardage off the bounce. Tons of hidden yardage lost by Somerset.

Kiernan will play next week. I think they realized they could give him the night off to heal, and still have a pretty good advantage on the lines. Congrats to both teams on great seasons, and bring it home for NKY 'Breds!!

First off, my hat's off to a great NCC football team. When it came down to the mental aspects of the game and adjusting to conditions, surface, and referees, NewCath did a better job tonight. I would like to see how this game fair out of a best-of-seven, but it's the playoffs and you only get one shot. Although I believe their fans are somewhat arrogant, I guess that comes with success. However, the players and coaches from NCC aren't so boastful, yet their game and attitudes speak volumes. The intangibles of this football team will have them holding a trophy next Saturday.

 

 

Second off, congratulations to the Somerset Briar Jumpers on a great season. The juniors from last year were forced to step into leadership roles earlier than they expected with only four seniors last year, on a 5-6 team. They really picked this team up as seniors this year, and have left a legacy. Their teammates will have a lot to work with next year. I think composure and big game experience, or a lack there-of killed us in this one. Like I said earlier, I would like to see how we'd fair in a best-of-seven, but that's not going to happen.

 

Third, Wilson Sears, yes, is very outspoken in his views about separating public and private schools. He may or may not represent the general concensus around here, but his opinion is his own. Just want to clear that up. It's not about who recruits, who is unfairly more talented, or so and so forth. You can put any 22 kids on a field and win games without having the most talent.

 

Fourth, before any else decides to bring the public/private debate up and make Somerset look like complainers, for lack of a better term, please make sure you can spell. ("...in going to be whining")

You actually gave Nky credit for what they have done. I'm surprised. The jumpbers had a great year.. I won't even mention what we argured last week.
