  1. Fairhope HS near Mobile, AL
  2. Going way out on a limb with that statement. Clearly, anytime the ball is going to be passed, the better the QB, the better the pass. That's a given. However, if the spread offense is installed, repped, etc. properly, a less than stellar QB can be efficient in the offense if he is 1) coachable, 2) above average intelligence, and 3) a good leader and decision-maker. Arm strength/athleticism are way down the list.
  3. How many seasons have you run the spread offense versus other offenses?
  4. Several factors combined to make this a tough season for SL: 1. Loss of an outstanding senior class, which had dominated the team last season except for a few positions. 2. Lack of overall size, depth, and experience, especially on the OL and DL. 3. A slew of injuries to players they could not afford to lose: Quinn, Cochis, McQueen, C. Nolan, etc. 4. A new head coach and the loss of two other very good assistants. One thing they can be proud of is that they fought hard in every game, winning some games they probably should not have talent-wise. That fact is a testament to the team and the coaching staff. I am sure they will do the same in their last game vs GRC.
  5. Please name an offense that works without talent, because I would like to market it to football coaches. The spread offense, when installed, practiced, and executed properly, actually helps the less than loaded offensive team - much like the wishbone/option schemes of previous decades.
  6. That 2-4 team (B'ham Minor) is about as athletic as the Spencer-Bush Male team from a few years back. I have seen both T (twice) and Hoover play in the last year, Hoover would win by at least 3 TD - no knock on T at all, have great respect for them, but the size and athleticism of Hoover would be too much for the Rocks. I think the pressure and the grind of all the attention is getting to Hoover right now - they will take it to a whole new level come playoff time - that is their M.O. the last few years.
  7. Hoover is 6A. I think Lakeland, FL is the new #1 team.
  8. John Curtis HS, the team that beat Hoover last week, resembled St. X talent-wise, except for their A-A RB, McKnight. They were physical with Hoover and ran right at them, then went over the top twice when Hoover expected run. Hoover may beat an X or T, but it wouldn't be a blowout, imo.
  9. I think the phrase "quit on them" is misleading. The team continued to lift and workout as in previous seasons until school went out. They got most of the ten allotted spring practices in before Coach Irwin resigned to take another position in AL. Coach Irwin gave them 12 combined years as an assistant (two volunteering) and head coach plus four as a player - he did not quit on the team. If he had resigned during the season or right before the season started, then your phasing might be more accurate. Other than that, I agree SL must be more balanced on offense, but with Quinn and McQueen banged up, that may not be possible.
  10. Congrats to Coach Abbott and the Jaguars. They made the plays and deserved to win the game. David is a 1) a great guy, 2) an extremely hard worker, and 3) a very good young coach and leader of men. He sets a great example for NL youth. SL sorely needs leadership from their veteran players. Too much excuse making, finger pointing, and sloppy play. The scheme is the same as the last two games, but the execution wasn't there. Can't blame the coaches for this one, imo.
  11. FYI - Bingham suffered from cramps in the 2nd half, probably why he wasn't in more.
  12. No, connection is fine - just have to post when the Hound nation has illusions of grandeur. 2003 30-28 (SL got lucky) 2004 41-28 (Corbin was w/o key players and SL got lucky) 2005 26-6 (Corbin was young and SL got lucky) 2006 21-20 (see 2004 excuses) 2007 Prediction - Corbin doesn't renew contract. 4 in a row, baby!!!!!
  13. Whitley, Lincoln are winable games too.
  14. It may be true - but the timing of the post shows a lack of respect and poor sportsmanship, imo.
  15. Nice - bashing a team you just lost to.
  16. Yes, but not recently. I think he was at MC around 1999-2000 when he first started coaching.
  17. Luckily for SL you weren't making the decision. There are many ways to measure the abilities of a coach. Certainly won-loss record is an important one, but not the only one. If Coach Irwin had been judged on his first season's record alone, would that tell the whole story? When Chappell had talent they won. When he didn't, they struggled. That is not unique in coaching. He also had very little help on his staff and basically had to do it all himself. Anyone with any sense knows how hard it is to win at PCC consistently. All of this is moot anyway. Good Luck to Coach Chappell and the Cards this season.
  18. LC is a Tony Franklin System client, Dusty played for Tony Franklin at UK and with the Horsemen, and also in a similar system at Valdosta State. I know Dusty personally, he is going to make a very good coach. It's not like he has to start from scratch or do it all himself.
  19. Yes, they would have to keep ceritification in mind when choosing any coach - at least in Laurel Co. I don't know about other counties. The school cannot create teaching positions for new coaches when teachers in other schools are losing their jobs or being forced to transfer because of budget constraints. Only one applicant had a certification that didn't fit, from what I heard.
  20. 1. None of the current or former SL assistants applied for the job. 2. Anybody who knows football in this part of the state knows it is almost impossible to win consistently at PCC. How many head coaches have they had? 3. The interviews have not been completed - that is the reason for the delay. 4. No final, official decision has been made as of yesterday. 5. Several people applied - some were head coaches, some were assistant coaches. The school can only choose among those that applied. 6. The AD, principal, assistant principals, assistant coaches, former head coach, teachers, and parent members of the council are all taking part in the selection process. IF, and I mean IF, Jason Chappell is the next head coach, why is he such a poor choice, specifically? What are the names of the "hungry", "qualified", etc. assistant coaches that have applied for the job?
  21. According to the AHSAA website, won six games, made the playoffs, and played in the toughest region (district) in the state with Hoover, Vestavia Hills, Spain Park, and Mountain Brook on the schedule. They lost to Tusc. County in the playoffs. I think this was their first winning season in a while.
  22. Let me say at the start that I am not for a split of public-private, but I am for 6 classes in football. South Laurel just lost a good coach to a public HS in AL. The difference down there is that the administrative and community support for football is fantastic. No one down there is complaining about private school dominance, regardless of the classification. Most communities in KY are either unwilling, unable, or don't know how to properly support a championship-level football team. The schools that do get the support they need can compete with and (sometimes) beat the private schools in the state. Highlands, Boyle, Beechwood, Danville, etc. However, having said all of that, there still is a big discrepancy in 1A and 4A in enrollment that needs to be addressed, and six classes would help that situation somewhat. There is no magic bullet!!
  23. I don't know about that situation, but here is a sample of the wild rumors I have heard this week - 1. SL will drop football as a sport 2. Every coach on the staff is going to AL with Coach Irwin 3. Coach Irwin is going to coach at the University of Alabama 4. Coach Irwin was fired 5. Coach Irwin is going to coach at Troy University Of course, knowing him, 3 and 5 would be OK, too. I do know for a fact that interest in the job has been high, and that some candidates have already been on campus informally, but I don't know any names. It appears the administration is moving quickly to find a quality replacement.
  24. I heard there was a party in Corbin Monday night after the news broke and that the Corbin coaches are helping Coach Irwin pack as we speak.
