North Laurel 36 South Laurel 21

Featured Replies

Chris Maggard - NL player of the game (WWEL 103.9 The Wolf) with 3 TDs, 1 2pt conversion, 127 yards rushing (as well as PAT's and punting duties)

Jeff Ledford - SL player of the game (WWEL 103.9 The Wolf) with a ton tackles and an overall solid game.

The bottom line was that NL found a way to shut down the SL offensive air attack in the 2nd half. SL led 21-15 at the half, but was only 9/20 for 87 yards passing with 2 INTs in the 2nd half. NL played with a short field and the first year coaches curse in this series continues (no new coach in several years has won his first crosstown showdown game).

I picked NL to win, however, I thought it would be closer than this.

I am shocked in this one...thought South would win.

This is one district that everyone will want to keep a eye on. Who is the favorite to win it now????

Probably Lincoln or GRC based on what I have seen so far this season. But this week may have either exposed Mad Ctrl as a young team or it just may fire them up.

Over the past 5 years, NL is now 3-2 against SL. The past half of a decade has turned this back into a rivalry!

South Laurel just wasnt the same team after half time , also i noticed players that were playing good never got to play much after the half. Terry Bingham didnt get much playing time , and on defense Shay House was playing a good game and only had 2 or 3 plays after the half. South just killed thereselfs , but good game to North Laurel.

I got to go with my boy's on this ones.

South Laurel-49

North Laurel-21

Off just a little GWB. ;)

I did not think this would happen. Can South Laurell not stop the run?

A few stats:

SL

Bowling 19-37 258yds 3TD 3INT

Bingham 4 catches 96yds 2TD

King 6 catches 72yds TD

Quinn 136 total yards

Ledford 10 tackles

South was penalized 11 times for 123 yards, one of which negated a 63yd TD catch by Bingham

NL

Maggard 22-111 3TD

Wardrup 6-11 105yds 2TD (both to Cornett 34 and 26 yards)

Asher ran for 49 yards and Brandenburg had 34

North sacked Bowling five times — three by Shawn Nelson — and held South to zero points and 58 yards in the second half.

I did not think this would happen. Can South Laurell not stop the run?

That's part of the problem, and they struggle to protect Bowling.

I say hats off to NL's defense, and linemen. SL got 2 quick TD's on long bombs, when NL was in some very tight, press coverage. After that, NL made some adjustments defensively, and did an excellent job against Bowling and a very potent SL offense. Pitching a second half shutout deserves a major hats off to the NL defense and coaches. Pretty fitting that the 3 second half INT's by NL's defense were by NL's own "Big 3" (Maggard, Brandenburg, & Asher). The 58 passing yards that SL got in the second was largely made up by plays on SL's last drive, when NL was in a very soft prevent defense. IMO, NL's linemen dominated on both sides of the ball.

Halftime adjustments by SL didn't seem to work out. It appeared that they went away from throwing the ball as much, and really gave NL's DB's a bit of a breather by doing so.

Penalties were an issue for SL, especially facemasks. They were whistled for several facemask calls, and honestly, could have been called for it 5-6 more times.

Congrats to the Jags on the win, and to the Cards for playing hard. This is one NL fan who respects what those SL seniors have accomplished in their 4 years, and the direction and elevation of the program during their time at SL. :thumb: Keep your heads up and win the next one.

South was called for facemask penalties several times when they played Corbin, a couple of which looked extremely bad and they did a lot of blocking in the back & holding that night also. They had better become a more disciplined team or it could cost them a playoff spot.

South was held scoreless for the final 33:43 of the game.

Congrats North Laurel on the win tonight. What is that now 3 in a row. Like i said after the game with JC, this North Laurel team was alot better than they showed but they just needed the little spark to make them believe in themselves. Looks like that win against Leslie Co. was just the key they needed to start the ignition. Keep up the good work NL and good luck to SL next week.

youve got to give credit to NL's defense on this one. keeping them off the scoreboard the second half. and the offense stepped up great last night with maggard really taking over and wardrup thorwing everything on target all night.

I have been saying all along that NL was much more talented than most were giving them credit for, .. they just had to find themselves and have done so in a big way the past 3 weeks. Actually moving into the Mountain Top 10 on WYMT. (BTW, Milam wasn't sure when NL was in the Mtn Top 10, but the last time I remember was the during the 2004 season).

Big rivalry week in Laurel County this past week. The first annual powder puff game (NL 38 SL 6), the varsity game (NL 35 SL 21), the Computer Place Bowl 8th grade game (NL 20 SL 0). The 6th grade game (SL 38 NL 0) and the 7th grade game (NL 48 SL 16).

After seeing what is coming up today at the Computer Place Bowl, I was impressed with the talent levels at both middle schools. South's 6th grade team is LOADED as is North's 7th & 8th grade. SL has a HUGE kid (last name is Lee) who has to be 6'3" and around 200 lbs who is a manchild. North has a 7th grader (#22) who is amazing and apparently a first year player who has jets. Ty Cobb (SL 8th grade QB) is a very good athlete as well. Both coaches have some very solid talent and should be in good shape for the next several years.
