Coach Bill Letton told me today that Dusty Bonner the former Uk Qb and fomer Lex. Horsemen Qb will take the Qb Job for lexcath. This will be Coach Lettons first coaching hire and lexcath and i have to say it seems to be a pretty good one.:banana: :dancingpa

I'm not sure if there are any articles or many people now becuase he just announced it to the team as of today, so sources that others know may be scarce... or they may not.

And we appreciate being first because of you but we always like it when someone that has been around for a while seconds the motion.

I heard it form Coach Letton also. Good hire by Coach Letton. The LC program is in good hands with Bill Letton. He will make good moves to continue to build this program.

I wish Coach Bonner nothing but good fortune. He obviously has the heart to coach. I just think it is hard to say that this is a good hire until "after" the first year.

Add to that he's in the front office of horseman now, I'm sure he's learned a few things. I think he may know the position well enough based on his experience to teach what he's learned to kids in high school. Just guessing though.

I would like to hope (and I do). He definitely seems like a fine, outstanding young man (according to what I have read about him). But I have learned a few things in the last 12 years.

 

*The best players usually don't make the best coaches. It is hard for them to relate to kids who have problems that they have never had. Combine that with the fact that it isn't easy to coach high school aged kids at the quarterback spot.

 

I hate to even ask questions like I did previously because people get the wrong idea some times. I definitely want this guy to succeed. I guess that I am at the point where I don't get all that fired up about guys with a storied past anymore. (Due to past experience).

 

Either way--I wish Coach Bonner the best.

No offense, Pete--but I don't buy that hype. (And that is the exact reason why I asked the questions that I did to begin with).

 

Hal Mumme and his "world class" staff are the ones that tried to spin that mess about Bonner having a limited amount of talent. You don't do what he did without a great deal of physical ability. Sure--his arm strength wasn't what they were used to with Tim Couch--but in all fairness, he set records in the SEC. Even if be did that with his head (which was definitely a big part)--he has/had physical skills that 95% of the high school population does not (and will not ever) have.

 

And the one thing that you didn't mention would be this--you can not teach instinct (which to me--is different than knowing how to use your head during a football game). Which is what makes the difference with a lot of quarterbacks. The good ones can "feel" their way through coverage packages, blitz packages, etc. You can spend 10 hours a day on that in high school--and you will be lucky to come across 2-3 qb's in the state who can pick up half of that.

 

Like I said previously--past history makes me extremely leary of the big time coaching prospects who come to high school. That experience leads me to give this guy a year before we make him the can't miss prospect that people are already leading too.

 

I honestly hope that Dusty does well. And I hope that I did not give you the impression that I am trying to bash your opinion. I just see these things a little different sometimes.

OK Rambler, here's my chance to ride you a little ;)

 

Talk about getting richer, is there any school around that has gotten the number of experienced, top quality people as asst coaches, in multiple sports over the last year or two than those Rams of yours ??

I wish we had several of those guys. We could start with that big tall guy in your dugout

Bonner also won the Harlon Hill Trophy, which is D2's version of the Heisman Trophy for the best player in the nation.

 

I think he will do a very solid job for LexCath. He is a smart player who knows the position and should have the respect/ear of any players he coaches. He was a player who got the most out of his abilities. Those are normally the best coaches as they have the heart for the game & know what it takes to win. Look at the best NFL coaches. They often times were not the best players, but those who worked hard to learn the game and play it at 110% every night. Bart Starr was a GREAT QB, but a terrible coach. Bill Cowher and Jeff Fisher were average NFL players, but got the most out of their abilities and became NFL coaches who got their teams to the superbowl. I think he will do a good job at Lex Cath!

If coach Letton wants to continue the offensive style of his predecessor, Bob Sphire, (and why wouldn't he), than I suspect Dusty would have learned something about the system after having played for Sphire with the Horsemen. Who else would have been as well qualified? Dusty has managed to keep a positive attitude about Lexington despite the treatment he received by Mumme so, he also seems to have a good head on his shoulders. I couldn't be more pleased with the choice.
