Tough season for the South Laurel Cardinals.

Featured Replies

Several factors combined to make this a tough season for SL:

1. Loss of an outstanding senior class, which had dominated the team last season except for a few positions.

2. Lack of overall size, depth, and experience, especially on the OL and DL.

3. A slew of injuries to players they could not afford to lose: Quinn, Cochis, McQueen, C. Nolan, etc.

4. A new head coach and the loss of two other very good assistants.

One thing they can be proud of is that they fought hard in every game, winning some games they probably should not have talent-wise. That fact is a testament to the team and the coaching staff. I am sure they will do the same in their last game vs GRC.

Good thing Bowling decided to not stay in Alabama. What would it have been w/o him?

I feel that Jantzen O'Neal would've been a very capable QB. However, his lack of mobility by comparison to Bowling, combined with the Cards' shaky O-line, would've led to even more sacks than the 5 or 6 times a game this season that opposing teams are getting to Bowling.

whats the cards record this season ?

3-6

They finish out the season next week at GRC.

Did this come as a shock to folks in London? I remember thinking they'd be pretty good after our own BGP preview called SL "a program on the rise" and "a sure fire bet to compete for the playoffs," but clearly it is neither. Obviously the injuries couldn't be foreseen, but were there other issues or was this just a complete misread?

The program was 'on the rise' prior to the coaching changes. That along with the loss of some talented players and some injuries really hurt the Cards. Things will not be better next year unless the O line gets better and they find more recievers to replace losing Bingham, Cochis and Baker.
