Lone Oak/Owensboro - Predictions
Word is Owensboro is healthier and playing better than they were in their first game with Lone Oak, but it was an ugly one. Lone Oak led 49-8 when they called off the dogs.

Mayfield 65 Caverna 8
Holy Cross has played a fairly good schedule in Louisville and I know they have some solid talent from having sen them twice last year. Plus, they have solid line play, as I recall. I think Hazard is as good as Holy Cross but there simply isn't much on Fairview's resume that makes me think they can play with Beechwood or Mayfield.

Some of us might prefer a good reason ... like a potential matchup problem or whatever.

Super District Round 1 Results (T,X,M,H)
Amen ... and amen.

Mayfield 65 Caverna 8
I don't think anyone is saying there is absolutely no way that Hazard and Holy Cross couldn't win the state title, only that it's a real stretch to consider them to be close to or on equal footing with Mayfield and Beechwood.

Mayfield 65 Caverna 8
I've had more than one football coach tell me that there are a whole of things you can't tell on video ... real size, speed, strength and toughness among them. Some things you can only see in person.

Mayfield 65 Caverna 8
I'm pretty sure Murray wasn't ranked anywhere near fourth when Mayfield played them, and I don't think Murray is a top-five team in 2A. Mayfield's most impressive win, by far, is over Paducah Tilghman, with the Graves County win probably the next one. I don't know that Hazard or Fairiview or Holy Cross have any wins comparable to Tilghman. Maybe Holy Cross and Jeffersontown, but I'm a little skeptical of Jeffersontown.

Super District Round 1 Results (T,X,M,H)
College/high school analogies don't fly ... for one thing, college programs are allowed to recruit their talent. And the regional brackets aren't based on geography. If you want to try another one, go ahead. That one doesn't work.

Super District Round 1 Results (T,X,M,H)
Again, the best solution is five classes, with Trinity and St. Xavier by themselves in 5A. That way, they can play whoever they want to with no restrictions and play each other for a state championship. And the rest of the big schools on the state can play in a class that has plenty of parity.

Edmonson County vs. Fort Campbell Predictions
Both Monroe County and Butler County just took Edmonson County to overtime, and both games were at Edmonson. Fort Campbell is a better team than those two, so I expect the Falcons to win by a touchdown or two.

The new Nelson County School
I was told by someone that knows the territory that one of the two schools should be considerably better because of the customary distribution of talent there. Evidently, it's the new school that may take a while to establish a competitive program.

Paducah Tilghman vs. Monroe County Predictions
No one disputes that, but Harmon is a fine three-sport athlete and a state champion in the long jump and triple jump. He is without question the better pure athlete of the two. He's taller and rangier ans has more speed. Personally, I think Jackson is the better all-around football player.

Super District Round 1 Results (T,X,M,H)
Trinity, St. Xavier and Manual are three of the best five 6A teams in the state. Male is better than people give them credit for because of their record against a tough schedule. The only real surprise is Male's margin of victory.

The new Nelson County School
I assume that the #5 seed in northern Kentucky will be seeded as the #3 team in that district. McCracken County consolidates in 2012 and I assume that either Muhlenberg County or Daviess County will move to District 2.
-
Paducah Tilghman vs. Monroe County Predictions
In terms of pure atheticism, Harmon is superior. That doesn't necessarily mean that he's the better all-around football player.

Present Playoff Format Nearing An End?
Fulton City and Fulton County are two of the smallest public schools in the state and are tucked away in the far southwest corner of the state. They are a combined 3-17 and both made the playoffs since every school in Class A gets to the postseason. Fulton City is making a 250-mile trip to Louisville Holy Cross for a game that no one would see as winnable. Fulton County might have a better shot at beating Kentucky Country Day, but they have a 300-mile trip to find out. Really, four or five hours for a first-round playoff game that isn't remotely winnable? That's what six classes has given us.

If Trinity Were To Lose....
Personally, I couldn't care less where Trinity is in the national rankings, and I'm not sure how many fans around the state care, either. All we know is that we're going to see Trinity crush everyone in their way en route to another state title. Some may be fascinated by seeing the best team to ever play in this state, but I suspect the 6A final will be one that draws less interest than most or all of the rest.

If Trinity Were To Lose....
If Trinity loses this year, we're all in trouble ... it's a sign of the apocalypse.
