Our contemporaries... quasi on staff now, but being in school has kept them from being there year round.

I know some recent graduates are looking to break in there.

They're close enough that I'll give Male the tiebreaker by virtue of: 1) their best team this decade being better than X's best team; 2) their loss to Trinity in the state finals was as entertaining a game as has ever been played in the state.

I have two, Manual defeating Male 26-0 in 1925 for our FIRST National Championship, or Manual defeating New Britain (CT) 26-20 in 1938 for our SECOND National Championship.

1959 Manual is considered the state's best ever.

Trinity, and I think it would distance in the second half.

Congratulations to these young men... appointment to these academies is no easy task.

We've gone out of our way (notice the phrase ceteris paribus in my last post) to point out that there are other factors involved, but that enrollment is a big advantage in 6A. One reason it's a big advantage in 6A is because it IS close to an all other things being equal situation in that it's a division dominated by Louisville schools, and there are a lot more similarities between the football programs of X and Male and Manual and Trinity than there is between MC and HHS. That's why bringing up Highlands makes no sense.

Final. Game was tied 35 all at half.

This is why the HHS argument makes no sense. Highlands has EVERY advantage over Madison Central, except for enrollment. What's the point in comparing the situation? It just muddies the waters. Now, take St. X versus Highlands, which are much more comparable except in enrollment, and you get 45-0 (and it could have been worse, I was on the sidelines for that game.) Numbers aren't the only thing that matter, but they do matter or we wouldn't have classes. Ceteris paribus, bigger male enrollment makes a big difference.

Cut it out.

So that puts the shoe on the other foot... why can't Trinity field a competitive basketball team almost every year, since you think that the NUMBERS dictate that they should? Catholic kids can't jump?

I'll take your failure to contradict my points as a victory for my argument. Bring up basketball all you like, but until you can find fault with what I post on the matter, I'll just cut and paste that response.

Many of the advantages listed for X and T are not applicable to Highlands, such as their Catholic football tradition. Just as Highlands' high talent level relative to their opponents is not a reason that X and T go deep in the state tournament. There are differences, and there are similarities, but as this thread is about 6-A I just don't see where it's useful to examine Highlands; it certainly doesn't remove the cornerstone of RRR's arguments to choose not to address them.

Since Highlands isn't the issue, and succeeds for DIFFERENT reasons than X and T, I don't find it to be telling of the thread at all.

Basketball is nothing like football. In basketball, individual talent can win out. In basketball, precision in execution is not critical to offensive success. In basketball, there isn't the possible advantage of specialization for offense and defense. In basketball, you have five guys on the floor and maybe ten others on the bench. In football, you have 11 on the field and maybe 89 on the sidelines. Stop bringing up basketball.

This is my take, btw: Over the course of cycles, the top public high schools tend to have a talent superiority to X and T (although, it should be noted that X and T have plenty of D-IA players at Louisville and Kentucky at the moment, and have certainly been on an upswing of talent in the past few years.) This is cyclical, but it basically boils down to every couple of years a school like Manual or Male or PRP or Henry Clay will be loaded up for their run. Male had a particularly nice run, but that looks to have tapered off as Manual's turn came up. But the point is that it's a cyclical advantage. With football's star power in Louisville on the rise, I'm actually not that sure this will hold up (see the recent surge in talent at X and T, just a few years behind the surge at public schools) but for now lets hold it as a given. I would also say that at Manual's height last year, they had only a few more talented players than X or T (and Trinity has the best football player in the state at any position playing middle linebacker.) X and T, on the other hand, have two big advantages to the top public programs. First, they have a solid grade school feeder system that begins preparing them to play ball at those two schools. Second, they have the numbers. Rockpride (and you know I love ya, brother) stated that RRR wants the talent AND the numbers as an advantage. Not quite. Take out the numerical advantage by consolidating Males and Manuals, and then you've removed it from the equation. Then, the public consolidated schools have a (cyclical, but more stable) talent advantage while the private schools have the (constant, not going away) preparatory advantage. In closing, we hear all the time that X and T have better coaches, alumni support, tradition, appeal, stadium lights, etc. I don't know that they sweep that board, but they come close. But I think if you remove the numbers advantage, it's a ball game.

Please tell me you aren't comparing high school and college. It's like comparing apples and durians.
