  1. We have a winner!:dancingpa First post about officiating of the night! Almost made it to midnight this week. Dang.
  2. That is correct, if forward progress stopped before going out of bounds, the clock stays running.
  3. They are certainly annoying, in poor taste and could potentially cause a foul. But I can't say that air horns are unoquivocally illegal.
  4. Nice. NFHS Rule 7-5-10a...It is forward pass interfenence if: Any player of A or B who is beyond the neutral zone interferes with an eligible opponent's opportunity to move toward, catch or bat the pass. Neerfan, can we recruit you to wear a striped shirt? Chicks dig the zebras...
  5. Here's an interesting tidbit: the NFHS Coaches Association makes up the rules. Officials are hired to enforce the rules that the Coaches come up with. Makes me say, hmmm.....
  6. Faceguarding is a foul in HS (DPI), NCAA rules require contact for DPI.
  7. If you got by with it , great, chalk it up as a victory. Please understand that Illegal Participation could be called in the future and it could result in a 15 yard penalty. That's all. Good luck. offside
  8. I gurarantee that the refs hope so too. We really do want the kids to determine the outcome.
  9. Didn't see it, wasn't there. In NCAA rules, Pass Interference requires contact.
  10. Coaches are contentious by nature , so any illegitimate argument they may come up with would not surprise me. What you described is an illegal play because a pretended substitution is used to deceive the opponents.
  11. Really, there is no rule against high school bands playing during a contest. Rule 9 does have a catch-all provision: (9-9-1...A player or nonplayer or person not subject to the rules shall not hinder play by an unfair act which has no specifiic rule coverage.) In college football, it's more specific: 9-2-1...Persons subject to the rules, including bands, shall not create any noise that prohibits a team from hearing its signals.
  12. I think I disagree; the answer is yes, it is most definitely a foul for deception. Please send me a pm.

  14. Illegal play. Rule 9-6-4...It is illegal participation: d. To use a player, replaced player or substitute in a substitiution or pretended substitution to deceive opponents at or immediately before the snap or free kick. 15 yard penalty.
  15. Rule 1-2-5...It is permissible to use college or professional fields with goal post uprights set at the width specified by their respective codes. NFHS goal width: 23 feet, 4 inches. NCAA goal width: 18 feet, 6 inches.
  16. I led you astray. We'd both get boo-ed... Forgot about the little fact that DPI can only occur on a legal forward pass. FBRULES will have me doing some additional rules study during detention for this one.
  17. Hmm. Anybody think we might have offsetting fouls?
  18. Most everybody is at least on the right track, but not exactly right yet. (Larry, it's a pass--not a fumble, but I like your knowledge of history.) This is a typical question that may appear on the NFHS Rules Examination. http://www.nfhs.org/web/2006/08/football.aspx
  19. And here's the link to the rest of the football signals, if you're interested: http://www.nfhs.org/core/contentmanager/uploads/football_signal_chart.pdf
  20. As FBRULES stated above, these two fouls are often confused. It's not likely that the defense was called for chop block. Illegal block below the waist against a defender is much more common and occurs when a linebacker or DB takes out a pulling guard or fullback lead blocker. See signals 40 and 41 on the link below: http://www.nfhs.org/core/contentmanager/uploads/football_signal_chart2.pdf
  21. Throwinglong has the answers.
  22. First and goal from the 10. If the defense recovers/intercepts, ball is dead.
  23. Charlie is a Northern Kentucky Coaching Legend in his own right, no matter how humble he may now appear to be. Back in the day, us officials knew we were in a Big Game if Charlie was yelling at us. And beleive me, Charlie was a legendary yeller... If my vote counts, Charlie Coleman is a first ballot Hall of Famer.
