Rules Question Help Needed

10 men in the huddle, in comes a player, out goes a player. The outgoing player (11th man) goes to the sideline but stays in bounds. Offense snaps the ball and throws him a pass.

Legal? Note: If it matters, he was just inside the sideline when the ready whistle blew.

Guess you saw Ryle's "top secret" play! I think it's okay since there were only ten in huddle. But I'm a Ryle fan . . . . :p

I would guess legal

Legal, as long as all 11 players were inside the numbers/hashes, before the snap.

Yes and I would agree. I thought that as long as he never left the field, he's OK. Some people next to me thought it was illegal.

Hold on. Why do 11 players have to be inside the numbers before the snap? IF that was the rule, no player would ever be allowed outside the hash.

No, at some time prior to the snap all 11 players have to be inside the numbers, that is why the field now has to have the numbers or a second set of hashes. After they are inside the numbers, they can then go outside the numbers, but they all 11 have to be inside the numbers at some point prior to the snap. This is to stop players from stepping off the sideline just prior to the snap.

Situation: Team A is losing, has the ball, clock running out. They're in a hurry up offense. By your wording above, it would seem that after each play , before the players like up for a quick snap in the no huddle, they would have to wait for the ready whistle and then go outside the hashes. Something doesn't seem right about that?

There is some rule about deception..this could fall under it

Thanks. Someone PMd me that rule.

OK, If a player comes onto the field from the sidelines, he has to first go inside the numbers, after he has established being on the field, he does not have to re-enter the inside of the numbers before every play. Once again this is to stop the 10 players being on the field and a player stepping on the field from the sideline and running a streak route down the field, uncovered.

Gotcha.

Not the situation I mentioned though.

10 guys in the huddle after a play. #84 runs in. #4 appears to be the one going out for the "apparent" sub. He stops on the sideline before going out of bounds. Quick snap. Pass to #4.

He never left the field so I don't think your rule above applies.

A couple of years ago the NFHS put in a rule concerning this type of play. On every field there is supposed to be a 9 yd mark from the sidelines. Some field have them and some do not but they are supposed to be there. If the marks are not there then the official usually uses the large numbers marking the field. Anyway...... At some point AFTER the ready for play whistle has been brown by the referee, each player HAS to be inside of those 9 yd marks off the sideline. In other words, he can not stay on the sideline after a play nor can he just step onto the field from the sideline. He MUST be inside the 9yd mark at some point after the ready for play whistle has been blown.

I hope that clears it up for you!!!

No, this is not correct. He does have to be inside the 9yd mark(numbers in mark not there) at some point after EVERY ready for play whistle.

Starting last year, there is supposed to be a 9 yd mark off the sidelines on every field in the country who uses NFHS rules. There isn't always a mark on the field so the officials usually use the numbers if the field does not have a 9 yd mark.
