ICN-6 NKY Football game Broadcasts: Thoughts?

Featured Replies

Thoughts on the actual live game broadcast? (Not the ICN-6 highlights with Don Webber or the Sports Page).

I have some:

1. Charlie Coleman knows his football of course and he also obviously knows the history of NKY football and NKY high school sports in general. He does a good job on the broadcast.

2. The camera work at times is not the best but the overall quality of the picture is pretty good considering that the fields and camera placements are not designed for TV.

3. The on-field reporters are pretty good and again do a decent job with the interviews and trying to keep up with things happening during the games.

4. I'm considering asking the Guru to give a complimentary BluegrassPreps membership to the play-by-play guy so he can brush up on games before he does a broadcast. Thankfully Charlie is there to bale him out most of the time. Just common knowledge things about the game that if one would spend 10 minutes on Bluegrasspreps one would know. For example, saying a "35-40 yard field goal would be way out of Highlands range!!!" Huh? They've got a pretty good kicker year after year and this year is no exception. Or "Highlands has someone else at QB!!! Not sure what's going on." Oh my. Well that's happened at times throughout the season. Or this "NCC/Newport game goes in streaks. One team will win 6 or 7 in a row and then the other team will win 6 or 7 in a row. This will be NCC's what 4th consecutive win." Actually it was 8 (every year since 2000) as pointed out by the on-field reporter and the teams do not trade off winning 6 or 7 in a row.

I know that some people will never be satisfied, but I love it. I think the quality of the picture is excellent and the announcers are great. I've always liked Charlie Coleman, but to watch him on TV I respect him even more. I am struck by the feeling that all of these people are doing this for the right reason. I only wish when I was a kid we had this, but seeing how we didn't I'm glad that my kids did.

I'm with APNW on this one. I love the ICN6 broadcasts except for the lead guy.

Is he not a NKY guy?

I wonder where they could find an experienced PBP guy with a good knowledge of NKY football??? :walk:

Mr. Coleman seems very knowledgable, What is his background? I think the broadcasts are presented very proffessionally.:thumb:

Charlie coached high school ball for a long, long time in NKY.

This same issue came up last year.

Also, I am thinking he might be from Louisville. Anyone?

Where and when?

Where and when?

Bellevue - I'm guessing in the 80s and 90s.

As for the 'lead guy', I've only seen 2 broadcasts, and am wondering if you mean Wes Wright. Wes is a Dixie Grad of '78.

I've been really impressed with the quality this year. Picture is pretty crisp, and it looks like the 'big time'!

I believe you would be guessing right. Didn't he also coach the late 70's teams?

Not sure but where's Trip Topkin when you need him?

I'm not sure if he coached at Bellvue in the late 70's, but he was there during the 80's and 90's.

Wes Wright is the on-field reporter who does a good job and is prepared with facts about the teams. He is not the lead guy.

Charlie was at Bellevue in the late 70's. He then went to Rowan County where he did not fare very well down there. He then went back to Bellevue in 1988 and coached Bellevue until the 2000 football season. Charlie coached some very good football teams. In 1990 his team was runner-up. In 1999 his team went 12-1 and 2000 the Tigers went 11-2. In 1999 and 2000 the Tigers went to the regional finals. Charlie does an excellent job and does have a lot of football knowledge. Just wish they televised the Dayton/Bellevue game. It was his old school playing and three former players were coaching. The Wilson's from Bellevue and Coach Montgomery for Dayton. ICN-6 does do an excellent job and it is cool the kids get that kind of exposure.
