It has come to a point now where these "All State" teams are simply a matter of where a kid plays or for whom he plays. Yes, there are factors involved that parents and fans don't realize (like whether or not a coach or school paid their Coaches Association dues) but to have 3 and 4 kids from one school ON the list while players like those mentioned above are ignored is atrocious. Congrats to all of those who were honored, but there must be a better way folks.

That IS correct. The unfortunate part of that discussion is that the No. Ky. area is the ONLY place I have been, and I've coached at multiple levels in multiple states, where I've EVER heard an umpire call a batter back for "not making an attempt to get out of the way of a pitch." It is a ridiculous call and is not called the same way by the Umpires in this Region. How about you guys get with the rest of the state at least and drop the whole "attempt" judgement and just guage whether the batter leaned into the pitch. A much easier and more consistent call if you ask me. And as for Mac W, if you are indeed an umpire, be immensely happy that there is not a spelling or grammar section in the umpires test. And there are some outstanding umpires in this region as well as a few real dogs. But the good ones far outweigh the bad ones.

Not a "to-do" thing, a requirement by the state, so I'd think he'd want to get that done. You can add the name of an out-of-state team over the phone when you call in the score, as someone stated earlier. We're not talking about Chinese arithmatic here, it's simply calling in the scores. What's the real difficulty? Just call them in, if for no other reason than as a courtesy to the other coaches. Lastly, the coach certainly knows how many he's played, but that's not who the reporting mechanism is for now is it? If the games aren't reported, the KHSAA doesn't know, and that's who counts.

#1 No, EVERYONE doesn't "know that." #2 It IS the responsibility of the head coach to report the scores of games to the KHSAA. That means ALL games. #3 Yes, it only takes about 1 minute to do so. #4 Was it 6 or was it 7 or was it 8? You know it Does matter when there is a game limit.

Agree 100%. When an athletes body is spending all it's energy in keeping warm rather than performing the skills required for the game, it's too cold to play AND risking potential nagging type injuries. It will get warm sometime. And, Loogy, those 90+ fastballs must have just shattered some of those cold bats . . .

Sure. All anyone seems to be remembering is the nice run they made at the end of the season. Very nice run, great job by some great kids. But remember, the majority of the season they were mediocre to good, as I suspect they will be again this year. Rating seniors who haven't played in a year or two or three as very good is a little suspect as well don't you think? If they get together and make another good run I'll gladly give them their due. As I said, JB is a great coach and might well get them back to the Regional final, but right now, I just don't see it. Nothing against anyone or anything, just how I see it.

Just some thoughts from a guy who has been around the game awhile: Highlands - WAY over-rated. No offense to JB (GREAT coach), but the talent is just good, not great like they want to believe. SK - WAY under-rated. More talent tham they're telling, good coaching staff, outstanding ace in the Newberry kid. Brossart - Will struggle early but come on by Districts. Dixie - Will struggle most of the year with teams of comparable size. Ryle - Needs to shake the "underachievement" label they've earned recently. Beechwood - Will be a team to reckon with by season's end. Teams to watch but will likely never get the respect they deserve - St. Henry, Bellevue

Actually you are quite wrong here. The "expectation" of confidentiality for APPLICANTS is part of the hiring process. No one has a right to that knowledge (civil litigation has proven this time and again asI read it). A HIRE is a public record and is covered under the open records law. Applying for a position where you may or may not get so much as an interview should NEVER be public domain.

Hearing from the Bellevue coaches that he is miles ahead of last year. The arm strength is back and his motivation is high. That would be very, very good news for Bellevue.

Some Juniors I've not been hearing about on this site are Nate Verst from Brossart (I know 10th Region, but still NKY), Dylan Huff at Bellevue, Jake Lawhorn at Cooper. There are some more but the feeble mind is failing me at the moment.

Wrong. It is a one year vote each and every year in each and every District. And remember, the vote is for the NEXT season, not the current season. so voting based on your "perceived talent" would be pretty risky for most schools.

First, for anyone to say that size "doesn't matter" in sports is reall rather clueless. If you run the number you will see that the once in every ten years small school state contender is a minute percentage of the state tournament participants. I believe there is a thread on that very topic somewhere in the BGP archives. The All-A is NOT a state tournament, it is an invitational, just like your aforementioned "glorified holiday tournament." That the schools that participate in it make it so special is a credit to those schools. Yes, there are issues with the tournament in terms of some of the participants, that it has lost some of it's original intent, and that it is misperceived as the small school state championship. There are teams now annually competing for the title that 20 years ago snubbed this very tournament as not worthy of their participation. But despite it's problems, this is good for basketball in this state, it is good for basketball at small schools, and it is good for the students that participate. And no, I'm not "hiding behind" (whatever in the world that means) not getting a chance. Unless you have lived the life of a small school in a nonclassed sport, you really have no idea what you are talking about quite frankly. I played at a big school and coached at a big school and now coach at a small school and I can attest to you there IS a gigantic difference in available talent, funding, and on and on.
