That was in 2001. Hazard played Johnson Central in 2004 at Knott Central.

Under the new system, Letcher Central would be the 1st team to win a game, according the the KHSAA scoreboard. The last team to win a game in the state tournament before the current semi-state, would be Hazard. Hazard beat Rokcastle County 1-0. The were beat by, eventual 2001 state champs Boyd County 9-1 in the 2nd round.

I think the 14th plays the 16th. As for LCC being the first team to win a game under the new system, I would have to research it.

I would like to see a team from the 14th to actually make it to Applebees. They just can't get past the 15th or the 16th Champions.

:thumb: I always like to see a HS player dive for the ball to make the play. I remember back in 2003 at the East Kentucky Invitational at Knott Central, Whitesburg was playing Breathitt, ball is hit hard between 3rd baseman and SS. Closer to 3rd baseman. He dove for the ball, jumped up, and threw the runner out. By a hair. All the while I was yelling, "Get it there! Get it there! That was the best play that I had seen all tournament. I just wish I remember who it was.

I have seen this happen.

Before I, and Strike3, arrived on this site. The "Baseball" forum was virtually dead during the off season. I am passionate about baseball and Strike3 has that much more passion for this sport. Along with Stickymitts, Hilltopper, cshs81, and a few others, we have kept this forum going year round. BGP had preseason previews for basketball and football. Baseball didn't have that until 2006. Me and Strike got that going. It's all about awareness. We promoted high school baseball here and promoted some more. I give Strike3 more credit than anyone. Baseball just needs more exposure and a chance. Like S3 said, it's going to take fans, parents, and coaches time and effort to get high school baseball more enjoyable and better for the student athlete. As for MLB and it's decline, I disagree. Some stadiums set records for attendance last season. Some did it in 2006. It's all this steroid talk that is making it look to be less popular. But that's a discussion for the "pro" forum.:thumb:

Totally agree with everything you say. I've heard from students that have been told their football and basketball coaches told them to stay away from the baseball program. :irked: Still, baseball is gaining more popularity. Some programs that have been beaten up over the years, had some success last year. Take Jenkins in the 14th, for example. They upset Knott Central in the district. And they are looking good for this season. Jenkins made it to the 2nd round of the 14th Region tournament. They beat another team, Jackson City, in the 1st round that has been a team that has seen it's share of defeats. Underdogs winning makes for some excitement and drama.

Playing the 16th, this year, could be good for the 14th. At least that's my feeling.

Players can condition on their own after the season is done and before the season starts. They can throw, hit, and field, on their own. Most schools have a gym. Knott has a gym and a teacher that helps them with weightlifting. He's knowlegable on weightlifting, so the athletes aren't being taught anything wrong. Strike3 knows the rule about coaches helping the players during the off season. But, any good coach will give his players a list of workouts and what they should do in the off season to stay in shape.

Great job Habakkuk. :thumb: Looks like a very good analysis of the 14th.

Hazard, to me, is the team to watch for. They did lose a few players, but return a lot. And they are in one of the two toughest districts in the 14th. Hazard, Perry Central, and Leslie are all good teams. Estill is the other team to watch. They have a tough schedule and return some very good players. Estill is in the other, tough, district along with Lee and Powell.

Summer and Fall was busy for me for, you know why. Congrats to Ludlow and Coach Bieger. Good luck to both in the upcoming season and the seasons ahead.

Going to be an interesting season in the 14th. A few teams are going to be young, while teams that most didn't see coming are going to be good. I know that Knott Central and JBS are going to be young. Unless anybody comes out that hasn't played before on both teams, both teams will consist, mostly of sophomores and juniors. KCC will have more sophomores. I have heard that a couple of seniors may show up at tryouts. Pitching is going to be Knott's achille's heal this season. Some of the players were on the football team this past season, and have been working hard in the gym all Winter. JBS has Evan Potter joining them this season. He injured his arm during basketball and should be ready to go by February 15th. He's a much needed tool for this team. JBS does have pitching and I think they will be better than most think.
