Campbellsville U would be a great spot for that, and a lot of these cross-sectional games. As close to the middle of the state as you can get without playing in Marion Co.

Rogers, a sophomore, caught 8 passes for 201 yards and 2TDs, and rushed 6 times for another 20. He also had two big tackles for losses, including one late in the 4th when TNHS was driving for the go-ahead score. Combine that with the three big first-down conversions and he's my nominee for POW. Just an outstanding all-around performance.

Thomas Nelson had a great chance to get its first-ever win over crosstown Bardstown, but squandered away several key chances in the first half with turnovers in Tiger territory. Tigers lived by the big play, using a double pass on the first play from scrimmage for a long TD pass to Elijah Rogers from Montrez Railley. Rogers caught another long TD pass from Brady Clark, and Clark hit Railley for a screen catch-and-run TD, all in the 1st half. A TD pass by Jerry Wimsett late in the 3rd and a TD run by Wimsett early in the 4th pulled TNHS back into the game. The Generals were driving with less than 5 minutes to go just outside the Tiger 20, but Bardstown's Jared Bruner and his teammates stacked up TNHS' Chase Howard on a 4th-and-1 to get the ball back. Rogers then came up with three critical first downs (2 by catch, 1 by run) to allow Bardstown to kill the clock and hold on.

That's a great point, and it applies in more than just NoKy. We have it in our own little microcosm of Nelson County between two county schools, a city school and a small Catholic school.

Who do you propose on the staff is going to do this? Most newspaper staffs have already been cut to the bare bones, and when people leave or retire those positions often go unfilled for a long time. Which means the people still on staff have more and more on their plate to deal with. There are more sports going on during the fall than just football, and those staffers have to cover those sports too. And then you want somebody on that staff to put together their own well-researched statewide rankings when they don't really get a chance to see a lot of teams outside their immediate area? And only so those rankings can get picked apart by BGP? I hope nobody's really holding their breath waiting on that to happen any time soon.

Shouldn't be underrated. Coach Brown has a ring after all. At Nelson Co., in the old 4A in 1996. Think about that for a minute. E'town has it pretty easy the next few weeks until the big game with LaRue Co. in a month. That game is at E'town, though, and I would expect them to win, even though LaRue has its best team in more than a decade. If LaRue wins that one, though, they're pretty dangerous going forward, as E'town is the Hawks' historical roadblock.

Hmm ... so the "all HHS coaches are HHS guys" is falling apart fast. In other words, it was "you can't be coach of HHS unless you went there" started with Coach Mueller. Him and Weinrich have half of the HHS total, and we've eliminated a few others from consideration in the other half.

That sounds like the basis for a relegation-type system, and it is very intriguing (even though KHSAA and most member schools would never go for it).

I'm just asking questions. I didn't introduce the topic. I have no dog in this fight beyond a curiosity about Ky football history. Some of you HHS folks are way too sensitive.

Who coached HHS from 93-94 (i.e., the CovCath years)?

Sure. Established tradition means a lot. Somerset used to never lose football players to Pulaski Co., but that has changed a bit since Southwestern opened and the county schools upped their game (but Somerset has remained a big player). Whitley Co. could be a lot better if Williamsburg closed. Same goes for PCC when it comes to Hazard. Johnson Central only in the last decade became a major player, since Paintsville historically got the best football players. Those are just examples isolated to SEKy.

I'm gonna say that's not really how it works in a lot of places. Bardstown has historically dominated Nelson Co., and it's an embarrassment if they lose to the Cardinals. I'm guessing that applies in Mayfield v. Graves Co., and a lot of other places in this state.

Thanks for the info. Guess I had never heard/read reference to that part. But I still have questions, since the topic was introduced. How many of the other 11 state titles were won by "Highlands Guys?" Duffy wasn't from there, unless I've read wrong. Is Owen Hauck a Ft. Thomas Bluebird?

Where are you going with this? Sounds like there's a comparison being made that you don't like. Of course not all 6A schools are equal. Many of those 6A county schools came about as a result of a merger of a handful of small county schools, most of which usually had just enough guys to field a basketball team. Most, of course, are terrible at football and are regularly beaten up by their much smaller city school neighbors, most of whom have been playing football for 100 years. Without looking it up, half of 6A is probably in this boat.

I though Mueller came out of Cincy? Coached several years there before coming to HHS? Did he play for/graduate from Highlands?

Mine is a general comment about all HS sports PA people, not just specifically football. Most of the local folks I deal with in the Bardstown area (Bethlehem, Thomas Nelson, Nelson Co. and Bardstown) are all pretty good. Some go a bit overboard and could stand to dial it down on occasion, but overall, I have no complaints. EXCEPT ONE! Don't use nicknames of the home team players. Not everyone is privy to inside jokes and nicknames used within the team or those directly connected with the team. We want to know their real name, as it corresponds to the roster. There's nothing worse than a starting lineup being announced or a big play being announced and it's by (insert cute or other nonsensical nickname here that only teammates/coaches/parents know). I can't stress enough how annoying this is to me.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here and touch on what my BG friend is talking about. There's speed, and then there's SPEED. A couple of key guys at the right spots win championships for teams that are generally considered fundamentally sound. Other teams are intensely athletic and have speed all over the field, in most every position. Speed kills and demoralizes. Disciplined speed demolishes.

Totally fair point and that thought had been with me throughout this read.

Schools that played on grass fields tonight better at least hope they have a bye week next week. Otherwise, they'll be buying a whole lot more of that cheap grass seed, and their unpaid volunteers may start asking questions given how nice of a night for football Thursday was.
