Do private schools "entice" kids away from public schools when they play one another?

Featured Replies

There is a conversation about who Cov Cath plays around Northern Kentucky in another thread, and there was a post made in there that says:

I do not understand why anyone would schedule them in the first place. All you are doing is giving them access to everyone in your community to "entice" future student athletes to attend their school.

Especially Boone County School systems teams that have closed enrollment. Do not give me the, only restricting yourself or just limiting yourself because of your own policy line either. The football coaches have to deal with the hand they are dealt and they are not going to be able to change school board policy. So, why go to CCH what is the benefit for NKY teams?

Same thing goes for scheduling Beechwood.

  • Apparently, Boone County is talking about implementing something similar. My son came home from school and mentioned this to me. He represents the student body on some board or other and was privy t

  • 1. It probably happens but no one really notices. A kid is "supposed" to go to X public school because of where he/she lives. If that student doesn't go to X public school but is enrolled in a paro

Are students really being tempted away from closed system public schools when they play private schools and open enrollment/tuition public schools in sports?

I think most of us want to be a part of a winner.

Let's face it, the Boone County powers that be are masters of putting themselves at competitive disadvantages.

Coming full circle, I don't think it has much to do with public vs. private but rather schools that have their act together vs. schools that don't have their act together.

This, 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 times this.

Back in my Boyle days which happened to also be during the 6 straight title game appearances we were often accused of recruiting by others in the area but all it boiled down to is that kids who moved into the area wanted to play for a team that won. When the parents learned that Boyle was one of the best teams in the state they bought homes in the Boyle County school district. Our success attracted outside talent without any coach having to say a word. I’m sure Cov Cath returning to the cream of the crop will also bring other kids in the Nky area that want to be apart of that success.

Of course people want to play for a winner. And there absolutely may be a few that make such a move simply because of sports. But the vast majority don't have the means to pay nearly 10k a year to play for a winner. The truth is, the Catholic education is a big draw for many and something that the public schools simply cannot provide. That along with no real boundaries is a big advantage for privates. But the tuition part is a big disadvantage.

No one has any real boundaries, just self-imposed ones.

Rarely. In this part of town you are born and bred to be either a Tiger or a Colonel/Panda.

You are naive if you don't think million dollar facilities can have an enticing influence on a 15 yr kid playing at an inner city school that resembles a trash dump.

You are describing a system problem.

Which wouldn't be an issue in Columbus if you wanted to go to DeSales, as they openly offer "scholarships" to athletes, however, in KY, Mom and Dad have to be able to cough up $9,000 to get junior in the door. Big chunk of dough for nearly everyone.

I think schools that are committed to ambition and excellence in any field - whether academically, athletically, performing arts, community service, etc. - will attract students.

As a student or parent - why should the going-in expectation of a HS experience be that you won't have access to the best resources/opportunities, especially when there are accessible schools in the area that are capable of delivering more?

It's about more than athletics...

In Boone County the talent is spread around so much, they hope for the once or twice a decade stars to align for a really good class.

CovCath is what a school could be like in Boone County if all the athletes could go to one.

Your average Boone, Ryle, Cooper, Conner team has 1-5 kids could start play CovCath.
