Hopkinsville wins its first Region 2 Championship in 24 years. Hopkinsville pitchers pitched 3 shutouts in the regional tourney, with the team outscoring opponents 30-0. Justin Hageman struck out 12 last night. Hutton White made an incredible throw from right field to get out a runner at home in the 2nd, in what ended up being a pivotal defensive play in the game. Josh Drake hit an inside the park home run. Great overall effort by the Tigers and first-year coach Randy Harrell!:ylsuper:

I heard it was a heck of a ballgame!

Clyde, I'm not "bailing" on you, I just hate to get into pointless arguments on the internet. I witnessed it in person, you've watched the iHigh video numerous times, good for both of us. You have to realize, I HATE when people blame referees for losing--in fact it infuriates me 99% of the time. That being said, whether you can see it from the video or not, this game was poorly called. For a game to be so poorly called in a state semi-final game is sad. You will not convince me the refs' behavior at game's end was appropriate. When both teams are left wondering if the game is over, then as the game's leader, you have not adequately done your job. At the very least, if they had conferred with each other and then explained to the coaches that time was out, it would've been a little easier to swallow. After all, if the buzzer sounded and there was no recourse, then that is all they can do. But sprinting off the floor with nary an explanation seemed to be the coward's way out. I understand that in normal situations it is not advisable for refs to hang around after the game, but what you cannot seem to grasp is that it was not a normal ending. The teams, both of them, deserved some closure. How many games have you ever attended where the coaches and teams do not shake hands after the buzzer because they are waiting for absentee referees? Whether you believe it or not, and I am tired of trying to convince you, it was pure and utter confusion. All that being said, the general incompetence of this group was obvious. I can give you several examples, many of which have already been said in this thread. You said you haven't seen any legit complaints yet--what about leaving an ineligible player on the court? What if the front end of a 1 and 1 had been missed? The fouled-out player would have remained on the court. Also, another instance, Michaela Hunter (#31 for Rock) clearly commits a foul. Everyone knows it, but it is assessed to #2 Sydney Arvin. This is fine with the Rock crowd because Hunter already has 3 fouls at that point and I believe Arvin had 0. However, if the roles had been reversed it could have been a major deal. Now on to what I have called the play of the game--the one you admitted was "debatable". The foul on Alexander when the Scott guard threw the ball out of bounds. Maybe Alexander did hit her, who knows? Even if she did, the whistle did not blow until the ball bounced under the basket, even The Courier-Journal article admitted that. At the very least it was an incredibly late whistle that gave the appearance of impropriety and was a pivotal turn in the game. I am tired of arguing this point, the game was last weekend and I'm already looking ahead to my children swimming in their own state championships this weekend. Rarely will you ever hear me complain about officials, but in this case, in my opinion, it is warranted. This game, which I did not have a family member or any real stake in, left me shaking my head. I truly wondered what sort of motivation that referee crew had for making the decisions that they did and I guess we will never know.

I don't know what to tell you.” Clyde, you seem to be the only one who is able to tell definitively that the game was indeed over.

Clyde, with all due respect, unless you were at the game you cannot understand what happened based on the crappy video feed from iHigh. Numerous eyewitness posters, including those without bias, as well as newspaper articles, have stated it was total confusion. It was chaos, pure and simple. One ref signaled game over, the other signaled ball out of bounds on Scott player, and then they bolted out. Even the coaches were confused. EVERYONE JUST STOOD AROUND AND LOOKED AT EACH OTHER FOR SEVERAL MINUTES! Is it that incomprehensible to you to consider the fact that perhaps the refs made a huge mistake?

Approximately 20 seconds to go, Rock down by one, Scott has the ball. Scott guard is being pressured and throws the ball from close to midcourt out of bounds, under the basket. As the ball is bouncing out of bounds, ref calls a foul on Jackie Alexander. Pivotal call of the game, IMO, because Rock should have had the ball, down one--instead it put Scott on the free throw line.

I have no idea what the KHSAA rulebook says in regards to situations such as that particular one. All I know is that the entire arena, including apparently the Scott County team and coaches, knew that there was time for one more play. Granted it would've been a catch and shoot 3 to tie it, but it was under their own goal. My whole point is it shouldn't have been left to the officials' discretion, and by them running off the court, it was.

And that makes perfect sense, if that is in fact what happened. Unfortunately, with the track record those 3 had, it seemed to be just another brick in the wall of their incompetence. As I said before, that one isolated instance was not the problem. It was the sum of their parts.

Clyde, I can honestly say I do not know. The tie up occured right in front of the Rock bench, in the Scott backcourt. Everyone was focused on the ball, so no one knows if the SC coach got the time out called in time. It was just more than a little fishy to have the one ref come charging in and change the call after the tie up was called. As an isolated incident, it wasn't a big deal, but coupled with the rest of the calls it was horrible. The game-changing call was when the Scott player lost the ball out of bounds and the female ref called a mysterious phantom foul on Alexander, who never appeared to touch the Scott player. That would have given Rock the ball, down one, with about 20 some seconds to go. Instead it sent Scott to the line.

You know, if you are going to create a thread to complain about the Rock crowd's sportsmanship, you really should talk about what terrific sportmanship the Rock team showed throughout the tournament. They were the first ones to help the other teams' players off the floor, always made a point to cross the gym to shake hands during intros, etc. Those young ladies certainly represented their team and school very well. That being said, I don't think the Rock crowd was necessarily booing the Scott team. If you were there, you saw what an incredibly horrible ending it was for the Rock team, and I think emotions got the best of them. I truly believe they were booing the fact that the Scott team was told to leave the floor and it just so happened they had to leave right under the Rock student section. I'm certainly not condoning booing kids, but I really think this was simply frustration at the whole situation. The Rock crowd showed class the whole tourney, this was not indicative of their usual behavior.
