  1. You can argue forever about whether Austin was the best WR and never get anywhere. That isn't the right question. He was easily one of the best players in the state the past two years. This year he excelled at offense, defense & special teams. On special teams he was as valuable on coverage as he was returning the ball where he also dominated. For those I have spoken with that saw a lot of teams play this year and saw Austin play most agree he was a slam dunk to be all state and it had nothing to do with his name. The question is did they chose the right spot on the all-state ballot.
  2. If Rosie can come back and play Safety or CB that would add a lot of depth to the secondary. He told me wants to, hopefully his injuries have healed sufficiently for him to play.

  4. I think the best thing about having the finals in Bowling Green will be that everybody in town will know they are hosting the state finals and make a big deal out of it. In Louisville I think most folks drive by and wonder why the lights are on at Papa John's. The worst about BG is the extra distance. (For some anyway)
  5. You should have come over to Ft Thomas to see it. It wasn't close. In fact it was a shut-out, 28-0 on November 7th.
  6. I agree, just as in the past, this would have been a great game. I would love to see Bell get to make the treck to Ft. Thomas some day.
  7. And if you can deduce anything more from what I said you are clairvoyant. The last line of my post was from my visual perspective at the game, not the picture.
  8. Here is Gold's TD Catch. He is clearly across the line and has the ball. Can't see from the picture what happened a frame or two before, but it looked good to me. http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Site=AB&Date=20081212&Category=SPT030201&ArtNo=812120810&Ref=PH&Params=Itemnr=7
  9. Could be a nice homecoming of sorts for Coach Black. Especially since his Mama grew up in the Fort :sssh: Love the facilities at Whitley Co. The layout is excellent. The hospitality of the Whitley County folks was great. I loved the signs on the exits ramp and on the road to the school. Congrats to Whitley on a great season!
  10. Highlands DB's are definitely a strength this year. One was all-state last year as a Soph. He will be again this year. #3 can also flat out fly and is 6' 4". Please Please Please throw the ball.........a lot.
  11. BroomBoy, You are correct. CCHS finished 14-1 that year and won the 4A title, while the Birds went 15-0 and won the 3A crown. Christian Cty had several D1 players on that team besides big Jerry Reese. I believe this is the only other time these two teams have faced each other.
  12. If you do that then you can throw in Hop-Town for Highlands.
  13. Yes, pretty much like students that don't live in the Corbin Independent School system's district that go to Corbin Schools pay tuition if their school system doesn't have a reciprocal agreement with Corbin. http://policy.ksba.org/c16/
  14. I believe Highlands longest winning streak was from 1981-1983. It was 29 games. 13-2 in 1981 ended season on 4 game winning streak State AAA Champs 15-0 in 1982 State AAA Champs (Also beat the 4A Champs, Christian Cty) 10-1 in 1983. Won first 10 games in 1983. Lost to Conner in the 1st playoff game. Conner went on to win state. Conner is in Boone Cty.
  15. The same goes for Corbin. http://www.corbinschools.org/
  16. Thanks for the correction.
  17. Will Bardo, next years Highands QB. Will is 6-4 (Legit) He was on the 4x100 relay team that I think won state last year. (Someone correct me on this if I am wrong). Will is starting at DB this year behind Tony Guidugli. I have yet to see a team that Highlands has played that Will wouldn't start for at QB. He doesn't get to play much when the 2's go in for Highlands because of the risk of injury since he is a starter and because he wouldn't be throwing anyway. Will is the real deal. He is smart, fast, tall, strong and has a sweet lefty arm. You will hear lots more about him next year. Oh yea, he had two picks out of the 4 passes thrown by Johnson Central last Friday.
  18. I dunno but here is the definition: CORNJERKERS In a time before modern machinery, when work was done by hand and horsepower was measured in mules, sweet corn was pulled or jerked from the stalk. The leaves were shucked off and the golden ears were thrown in a wooden wagon pulled by a team of mules. This was Cornjerking, In other parts of the United States, this harvesting process may have been known as corn snapping, corn shucking, or corn husking. The many laborers who walked the fields to harvest the crops were called Cornjerkers. The invention of the corn picking machine has made this hand harvesting process obsolete. By using modern machines, a farmer is capable of tending larger fields, thus producing more food with less effort. As a result, the term Cornjerker as used in the agricultural industry has become a colloquialism. Hoopeston, Illinois has long been known as the "Sweet corn Capital of the World." In the 1920's the term Cornjerker was first applied to the athletic teams of the school just as the Pittsburgh Steelers got their name from that town's steel-mills. Bob Poisall, a sports writer for the Commercial News, is credited with first coining the team name. From the information available, the name was a joke that stuck. In the fall, the team buses to games were often late in leaving because the teams' members were still in the fields jerking corn. Per the custom at that time, Mr. Poisall was riding the team bus in order to cover the game for his newspaper. In exasperation on one of these occasions, he told them they would never get anywhere, they were just a bunch of cornjerkers. Glenn Brasel, coach of Hoopeston High School from 1922 through 1946, must have liked the term and felt it would be an appropriate team name. The emblem of an ear of corn first appeared on the team uniform in 1930. In 1965, the mascot known as "Jerky" was born. This walking ear of corn was created by Dick Hobbs, who was coach and athletic director at that time. Cornjerkers come in all shapes and sexes. Brawny football players, lanky basketball players, speedy track team members, petite cheerleaders - all of these students are Cornjerkers. Coaches, faculty, and fans are also a part of the Cornjerkers. Originally, Cornjerkers were from Hoopeston. One of their rivals were the East Lynn Hornets. In 1973, the Hornets were turned into Cornjerkers - Hoopeston and East Lynn schools consolidated. As of March 16, 1985, the best known Cornjerkers are the members of the current basketball team. The team is number three in the state of Illinois in Class A basketball. According to Don Dukes, Mayor of Hoopeston, " After this past weekend, there should not be anyone in the state of Illinois who doesn't know what a Cornjerker is and where one comes from."
  19. The Wooden Shoes made the list, I didn't see Cornjumpers but the list has the Cornjerkers: Hoopeston - Cornjerkers http://www.hoopeston.k12.il.us/ & Tuetopolis - Wooden shoes http://www.teutopolisschools.org/
  20. Because, this is the first time I am aware of that Highlands has played Whitley Cty and it seemed somewhat reasonable to set the record strait for their fans.
  21. The overwhelming majority of the kids at Highlands are multi-generational students in the Ft Thomas School system. At least one and often both parents (as well as grand parents) went to Ft. Thomas Schools........ I can think of one tuition student on the team. He doesn't start. His father and his three brothers went to Highlands and he has a first cousin on the team.
  22. Yup http://www.watersmeet.k12.mi.us/nimrod.html Origin of Nickname Watersmeet School began using the nickname the "Nimrod" in the year of 1904. By Biblical Accounts, Nimrod was "a mighty hunter before the Lord." According to the Old Testament, he established a great kingdom and founded a number of important Babylonian and Assyrian cities. Watersmeet, situated in the heart of the Upper Peninsula Ottawa National Forest, adopted the name because the forest is prime hunting land for waterfowl, deer, and bear. by Bill L. Roose taken from the 1934 Wahinain Something of Interest In the year of 1986, ESPN,"Sports America Show," compiled the 10 top nicknames for high school sports teams. the "Nimrods" ranked third out of the 10 top nicknames. 1.) SYRUPMAKERS of Cairo,GA. 2.)BEETDIGGERS of Brush,Colo. 3.)*NIMRODS* of Watersmeet, MI. 4.)IMPS of Cary,N.C. 5.)ATOMSMASHERS of Jonhson Prep, Savannah,GA. 6.)ANGORAS of Clarkston,GA. 7.)FLIVVERS of Kingsford,MI. 8.)SQUIRRELS of Winslow,AZ. 9.)PEGLEGS of Stuyvesant in New York City 10.)DOTS of Poca,W. 23. I can't believe I am going to get sucked into this because it has been rehashed soooooooo many times that it is beyond old. Highlands is the high school for the Ft Thomas Independent School District. It is a public school. Highlands loses more kids to other schools than it gains. We could post the NewCath roster and list a whole bunch of kids that live in the Ft Thomas school district but don't go to Highlands. There are also kids from Ft Thomas that go to CovCath, Cov Latin, Summit Country Day, Cincinnati St X and others. If you look at all the postings about the number of surnames for Highlands you will see a all the kids from families that have played at Highlands for generations. So tell me how Highlands gets the pick of NKY when Beechwood, NewCath & CovCath are in the running for a state championship in football every year. Highlands get families that stay in Ft Thomas so the kids can go to an excellent public school system and the kid can go to the same school as their parents and be part of a strong community. As for football, these kids work their tails off year round in the same system for years with an unparalleled coaching staff. They respect their opponents each week and come to play on Friday's and this Friday will be no exception. Whitley will see a smallish team come out on the field on Friday and think: This is Highlands??? and not be impressed. I hope and expect they feel differently 48 minutes later.
  24. The best may be the Watersmeet Michigan - Nimrods
