Should McCreary Central Drop Football ?
I've been watching McCrreary Central for years now because their situation mirrored Knox Central so closely. Knox Central had never had much success in football, rarely making the playoffs, never having won more than 7 games in a season, and usually finishing somewhere between 2 to 4 wins. In 2003 KC finished 0-10, scored 44 points all season while giving up more 440. After the season ending 55-6 loss to Rockcastle, I recall seeing the mother of one of the senior players confront one of the board members as they were walking out. With tears in her eyes she told him "Don't you ever let a group of kids go through something like this again." He looked stunned for a few seconds but then he told her simply "I won't". We already had a good booster club in place and with pressure on the rest of the board, a committee was formed to find the best coach they could. It was agreed not to wait for applicants, but to actively persue high profile head coaches. We got a lot of interest from top coaches, most of which would rather I not name them. The closest we came, (I know he won't mind me saying his name) was Tom Larkey who at that time was at Rockcastle. He actually agreed to come but backed out at the last minute for reasons I understand. The committee finally decided on Wayne Mills and the rest is history. My point is this. If enough people demand it, any administration will cave in. As I used to say, there is no genetic superiority in the kids from surrounding counties. It just comes down to development and McCreary, Greenup, Knott or any other can field a competive team. By the way, aside from Knox Central I recall another school that was being blasted some on BGP in 2003. Johnson Central was in the process of going 1-9.

Bell County/ Knox Central to Renew Rivalry?
Speaking strictly as a fan, I've heard nothing to make me think that Harlan County will not be on the schedule next year. Only hearsay, but I've been told that when Corbin was approached, they said no thanks but KC can play in the Pigskin Classic. We did, versus Karns, Tenn. Williamsburg has been on the schedule many times in the past as has Harlan Ind. Personally, I see nothing to be gained by playing 1A schools. Some years they're competitive, some they're not.

Bell County/ Knox Central to Renew Rivalry?
I think Whitley is going to prove to be a good addition to the Bell schedule and I hope Knox adds them soon. If the Laurel County schools could get their act completely together, we could put together a very competitive schedule right here in this area without all the out of state teams. I must admit, I like the "away" part of playing Gatlinburg Pittman.

Bell County/ Knox Central to Renew Rivalry?
I'm hearing from usually reliable sources that Bell Coach Wayne Mills has informed KC Coach Scotty Russell that he is ready to renew the series. Both teams have difficulty filling out their schedules with quality teams (Knox Central will play 3 Tennessee teams for the second year in a row) and this game has proven to be a financial windfall for both teams as well as an entertaining way to arouse the fan base. For me, as Knox Central continues to climb the ladder, I've missed having the Bell game to guage the progress. I know Coach Russell was very receptive to the idea and it's just a matter of fitting it into open dates on each other's schedule. Make it happen, guys.

Rockcastle County 46 Estill County 18
Good to see Rock get back on track.

Middlesboro 27 Harlan 20
Harlan Ind. was expecting this to be one of their better teams. Not going as expected so far.
-
Bell County 21 Whitley County 14
Whitley came back from a 14 point halftime deficit to tie the game. I think the Colonels are going to be a team to watch.

Danville 28 Corbin 21
Another close loss for the Redhounds. I know Hunter Grubb had a TD punt return for Corbin.

Kentucky Class 4A Football Rankings for 9-4
I agree about Russell County. I listened to some of their game with Whitley and they seem to have all the ingredients.

Knox Central 39 Johnson Central 29
Correction on the above. According to the newspaper, Canady had 17 carries, 207 yards. Also led the team on the defensive side with 12 tackles. 3-0 may be KCs best start ever. With the next two games at home against two Tenn. teams that they defeated handily last season, the Panthers could be 5-0 headed into the game with Harlan County.

Dave Cantrall's Rating the State 4A
So have I.

Knox Central 39 Johnson Central 29
Radio reporting 180 yards for Canady. Also want to note the Devon Evans, who had the game saving interception, also was credited with causing the two earlier Johnson Central fumbles. He is a two way starter as Knox Central's starting quarterback.

Knox Central 39 Johnson Central 29
Hardly the low scoring game I predicted but I"ll take it. Now, for those of you who are involved in the BGP 4A rankings, it's not Knott County Central, it's not Knox County Central, it's K-N-O-X Central! Remember the name.
