Since I obviously hyped Atherton and picked them to win??? :confused: Atherton averaged 77 points a game which, best I can figure, was the most in the region. But they only finished 13-12. So yes, defense is optional for them. Moore and Atherton both need a high scoring game in order to have a chance. Atherton does not have much of one. Moore is talented enough that they could scare some teams----NOT to win the region. I've seen Mosely 4 times. The first was in the LIT where he appeared to have no desire to play until the final 4 minutes. He dominated those 4 minutes, but it was too late. The next two times, Moore won handily. He had good numbers, but was very unselfish. In the district final, Moore needed a big game as their next two leading scorers were in foul trouble. They got it from Mosely.

Atherton. Who has the ability to put up a ton of points. They are a team that the game is never over: if they are down 20, they can get hot and come back; if they are up 20, they are going to keep running and shooting 3s and potentially let someone back in the game. They have a very talented guard in Troy Weatherford. Still, it would take a very special effort for them to defeat Ballard. In the "What were they thinking category", Atherton's student body (which was over 20 people for the first time I ever remember seeing them) started chanting "Overrated" at Eric Mosely from Moore in the District Final. Mosely was about halfway to a triple double at the time and ended up with 48 points and 11 rebounds. I'm not sure how many assists and steals he ended up with, but it had to be at least 6 of each.

In terms of depth it has been this way for over a decade. In the mid-late 80s and early 90s, you could count on PRP, Fairdale, Central, and Doss all being very good. You throw in Valley and Butler at various times, and often 5 of the top 15 teams in the state were from the 6th. As the demographics of the metro area have changed with a migration to the Eastern part of the county, so has the balance of the regions. Today, PRP is the only team that is a consistent contender. Other schools seem to have some runs (i.e. Iroquois, DeSales, Fairdale) where they challenge for the regional title, but they are just as likely to be a second-tier power with a chance to pull an upset rather than being considered a serious contender.

Whitefield Academy vs. Collegiate in Saturday night's final.

Yes. A bit on the questionable side. There were 7 or 8 offensive fouls in the 3rd quarter. One of them was pretty bad and he got a warning at that point. On another one in the 4th, he got one after another bad call----questionable T at best. The ejection came just a few minutes later when he was trying to call up. He was up out of his seat trying to call a time out and signaled it in the officials face. I could see both sides----it was very loud at that point and a 3 or 4 point game so he needed to make sure he got the TO. At the same time, I can see where the official thought it was "showing up" the referees by signaling in his face. FWIW, Catholic did not have a foul called on them in the first half until 5 1/2 minutes remaining in the 2nd quarter.

It was very close. J-town did not take control until just a few minutes left in the game. Catholic was up 8 at the half and J-town up one after the 3rd. Pretty intense game. 17 fouls in the 3rd quarter alone.

Dunbar Rec. Center was used and was the hottest gym I've ever been to. In addition to it and Sayre, they used Broadway Christian Church, the old Jefferson St (?) YMCA, and a middle school (Lexington Traditional?). It is one of the top camps, especially for middle school/early high school players (made much nicer by staying on campus in air conditioned gyms now).

It's actually Christian Academy of Louisville (CAL) unlike Lexington Christian Academy (LCA---which at one time was TLCA "The Lexington Christian Academy"). CAL actually has several different campuses that they manage. The baseball team comes from the English Station campus which is elementary through high school. There is also CAL-Rock Creek (an elementary school where the entire school used to be); CAI (Christian Academy of Indiana--the former Graceland Christian School); and CAL-Southwest (which is currently through 10th grade and adding a grade each year). Each campus field their own athletic teams. I know LCA used to have different campuses as well for the elementary and middle school levels. I'm not sure if they still do this or not.

Is the 1st round surprise Whitefield going the distance or is it Ballard not?

7th Region games are Tuesday. 6th Region was today.

Based on where Bullitt East and Shawnee are placed, Fairdale will be playing Holy Cross. Could be a pretty good 1st round game.

Iroquois defeats Desales at Desales.

Robey did not play all year due to his football signing. Sewell apparently missed the game with the flu. Chambless was injured in Trinity's game against J-town.

Collegiate's only hope to stay close is to shoot extremely well from the perimeter. Not exactly the easiest thing to do in your first trip to Richmond. If they can hit a couple early, they can be very deliberate and really limit possessions. If they don't, it could be ugly fast.

At what point has he claimed an "unfair" advantage by private schools? Given his background combined with his willingness to schedule anybody, I'd be surprised if this was really the case.

Evangel lost to Beth Haven 60-6 Tuesday night. No idea whether they played 11 or 8.

Warren Central wins by 2 on a pair of free throws by Anderson with 1.7 seconds left (sorry, but don't remember exact score). Male held the ball for most of the final minute holding for the last shot, but Beaumont dribbled into a crowded lane. Central threw a long outlet to Anderson who was fouled to prevent the lay-up. Beaumont's 30 footer at the buzzer hit the front rim. Fairly low scoring game as both teams played solid defense and were very deliberate on offense.

The only first round exits came during a down stretch for the 6th region. So, that's 6 out of a possible 16 playing on the final day (actually less if you consider them being in the same bracket). In comparison only 2 out of a possible 8 coming from the 10th region. But if you really want to see how "pretty" things are in Louisville, we can continue into the 90's when 5 of the titles were won by teams that were among the best in the nation. Not to mention the 7th region tournament in the past 8 years has often included 3 or more top 10 teams in the state.

J-town Seniors were Ceedrick Ware, Dale Easley, and Buddie Rice. Thomas Coleman, Rashad Basey, Nick Gagel, and everyone else will be back. Should be in the running again in the always tough 7th Region. J-town has officially achieved re-load status.

PRP has a legitimate complaint. This was the only game of the tournament where the officiating became the focal point of the game. Crutcher's second foul was ridiculous, as he had position on the block and was straight up. The Apollo player may have been fouled, but any contact was from the player doubling down. The 3rd foul (a charge) was a call that was not made any other point in the tournament (which for the most part was very loosely officiated). There was no "displacement" of the defensive player. The 4th foul (another offensive foul---a hook) was a legit call. The 5th foul was perhaps the worst call of the entire tournament. Crutcher drives to the basket to cut the Apollo lead to two. He's called for a charge. The player was under the basket and was not even squared up to the contact. Why in the 14th game of the tournament does the style of officiating change?

Looked a little tight at first, as many of the J-town players did, but hit a couple of big 3s to change momentum in the 1st half. Most importantly, he stepped up and hit 2 big free throws inside a minute (after the Coleman block, I believe). These came after he had very few touches in the 2nd half and after J-town really struggled from the FT line (double digit misses). I think they only missed one in the 4th quarter, however.

Solid game, though he still needs to get stronger with the ball---brings it down low too much. Definitely was a force in the middle defensively. Ballard was very tentative with their penetration other than Hamilton. Coleman had the defensive play of the game blocking a shot off the board trailing a fast break which preserved a 2 point Charger lead at the time. Think Tayshaun Prince in the NBA Finals on a high school level.
