Saw this posted on Facebook, and think it should get some spotlight. This kid is not only a great football player, but also a quality young man. It's hard to see (I had to watch 3-4 times, but you can clearly see Edge brush off an OC fan wanting to celebrate after the 2 point miss by Beechwood, to try to comfort the Beechwood receiver). I love Atwell, and think he should be playing D1 football somewhere, but after the championship loss last year, I kept telling people that OC has a better chance of winning it all with Carrothers. Atwell is more talented - bigger arm and better runner, but Carrothers will take what the defense gives him, as opposed to Atwell, who wanted it all in 1 play. You have to love Atwell's fire and competitiveness, but 2 years in a row his emotions got the better of him in the state championship [EDIT - AFTER CONSIDERATION, ITS HARD TO SAY HIS EMOTIONS GOT TO HIM IN THE MAYFIELD GAME. HE PLAYED LIGHTS OUT AFTER SOME EARLY ADVERSITY]. Hopefully, Carrothers can continue his strong play against LCA.

We can play what ifs all day long, but at the end of the day, OC still has a 3 year streak against O. Here are my what ifs: '22: actually no what if. O never should have lost that game - Their coaches blew it. I can't remember his name, but they had a very talented and fast rb that year. 4th and 1 late, a 1st down seals it - O runs the only play that OC had any chance of stopping. Instead of using the kids speed to get outside, they run right up the gut, and get stuffed. Then, the Hail Mary to set OC up for the winning TD. Blown game by O. '23: 3rd and short late on about Os 45 yard line, Atwell throws a little swing pass to Edge who proceeds to trip with nothing but green grass in front of him. OC punts. With O driving to take the lead, Edge drops an INT thrown right to him (what if he doesn't trip? What if he catches that INT?). O takes the lead - OC has to make a long drive to win the game. Atwell had a hell of a game. They probably don't win without him. 24: the biggest what if of them all. OC is set to run O out of the stadium. Easy (and I mean easy) TDs on their 1st 2 drives, and in the redzone again, looking to go up 21-0 - Atwell makes a huge mistake and throws an almost pick 6 (he ran the kid down). Anyway, instead of 21-0, it's 14-7 and we have a ball game. What if OC scores a TD there instead of the INT?. Does O give up, down 21-0? Who knows, because it's a big what if? I'm really looking forward to this game - if Os line and step it up, they most likely win. If not, and their qb has to scramble all game, I think it's OCs to lose. I just pray for a clean safe game, with no injuries. I root for O every game they play, except for 1 each year.

I'm an OC guy, but this game worries me. In my opinion, the game hinges on the qb for OHS. I think OC will have the better line play, but I don't think they'll shut down the Devils. Can they limit the big plays? If so, I believe they'll win. If not, the streak will be over. I'm going to trust the OC coaching staff - they seem to mostly have good schemes and game plans. In my opinion, they are also underrated Purple88. My prediction: 31-21 Owensboro Catholic Or 42-21 Owensboro ? Kidding - I'll stick with the first prediction.

I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but the football program was down to like 30 players Edge's last year. No one wants to play for him. Morris took a dumpster fire and turned it back into a consistent winner. His first couple of years (down years) were the direct result of where the program was heading under Edge. If Owensboro hires him, they'll be looking for a new coach within 5 years.

Every team OC plays has better athletes than they do, outside of their district. I agree with everything you've said, except OC being dominated by PT in the scrimmage. Did you see it? In a game where QBs weren't live, OC was inside the redzone several times without scoring. Atwell 100% gets at least 1 of those in the end zone if he can run. I have no idea what the final was, but it was a close game (I think PT was up a score when the JVs got in, which was for the 4th). Could OC beat PT right now? Don't know, but to say they were dominated in the scrimmage is just factually inaccurate. But to your point, they aren't beating the top 6A teams in the state.

Correct. If I'm not mistaken, he is an Owensboro High School fan. OC fans are cautiously optimistic - definitely not overconfident.

Of course they would have - but he threw an INT on a play he for sure would have run. And OC was inside the 10 several times and Atwell is a huge part of their run game. I just feel that's a very tight game if QBs are live. Of course I could be wrong - just my opinion. I don't pretend to know it all. Hell, maybe PT beats OC by 40 if they played now. But I just don't see it.

Call me crazy, but I think Mayfield has a shot here. PT is loaded with talent, but I watched their scrimmage at OC, and if they're playing QB live, you go to the 4th quarter in a very tight football game. Yes, it was a scrimmage, but it didn't have a scrimmage feel to it. Tilghman was visibly getting tired, so even though the wisdom says slow this game down, that's probably playing right into their hands.

You have got to be joking. All that is all over this message board is how OC has no chance. There is that thin skin Mayfield fan again. Mad that a team is confident, and not cowering at the thought of playing Mayfield. I'm sure you believe they should have said they have no shot, and they're just happy to be going to get beat by the best football team of all time. Ridiculous.

Mayfield fans sure have a thin skin when picked against. I was told it's just someone's opinion, and to not get so worked up about it. The fact that some of you think OC has NO chance is funny to me. As a Catholic fan, I can see it going either way. But, I don't think we're supposed to say that here. Too many hurt feelings if we do.

I believe he holds an offer from EKU. According to his social media, he's been invited to Louisville several times, but no offer. He also went to Marshall and Purdue, it appears.

Hayden is very good - if interested, watch this short video of Atwells highlights, and see some of the pinpoint passes he makes too.

That's actually the game I watched. I agree - better than Boley, who I've seen maybe 4 times. Beechwood kid is really good, my bias just tells me Atwell is the best in the state. Both great players, though.
