Right. That's what I said in my post. I said he played QB against DeSales last year but was playing WR this year.

Yes and yes. I was actually surprised because last year Bankhead was the QB, and a good one. But he played WR against DeSales. I'm basing it on the fact that DeSales beat NH 41-14 a few weeks back, and NH's second TD came with a few seconds left against the back-ups. It was a total thumping. So barring some unknown reason for the game being this close, I just can't see OC being a threat to win the region.

My post said a trip to Louisville, not a trip to DeSales. Meaning either DeSales or CAL. I admit that I would be shocked to see to see Mayfield anywhere other than one of those two places that weekend, especially after seeing what happened to Glasgow last night.

The Colts' second round opponent....is this a shocker to anyone else? I thought Glasgow was the real deal.

Agreed. Mayfield probably already had travel plans to Louisville for Thanksgiving weekend, but now those plans can be set in stone.

Definitely! However, I think I could have run through most of the holes that were opened for him in the second half. But you're correct, he did look like a good athlete.

Good question. The quarter CAN end on an offensive penalty. But because the result of the play was a TD, DeSales accepted the penalty instead of declining it, which gave St X one more play.

Here's some good news from the other side...this is a very deceiving score. For those in 2-A, look out, the future is bright for the Colts also. First of all, they clearly had the three best players on the field. They had 25-30 players and X had 105. So guess what? They wore us down badly in the second half. HOWEVER, here's what the first half looked like. DeSales had 11 first downs and roared ahead 13-0, while also coming up an inch short on 4th down in the red zone, keeping them from a THIRD score in the first half. Meanwhile, X did not get a first down until half way through the 2nd quarter. DeSales won the battle in the trenches...until the second half. It became apparent that all of our guys that were playing both ways got worn down. When you've got a tired defense against a fresh offense and a tired offense against a fresh defense, you lose the second half 28-0. Add to that the dominance of X in their other games, and this was a very impressive result for the young Colts. Congrats to X on a great freshman season.

Great article! Here's one thing I would add. CAL has the following advantage - regardless of who they are playing, they will have the best player on the field. If you haven't seen Milton Wright play, you're missing out. Now, here's the other piece - if Milton Wright was Adrian Peterson, this would still be Mayfield's title to lose. I agree with the weaknesses stated for the Cardinals - none! I think both DeSales and CAL are capable of beating the Cardinals, but until you knock the king off the top of the mountain, everything else is just talk.

Not to look past the opening round game, but Glasgow makes me nervous in the second round. The coaches will have to do their best to keep a group of teenagers from looking ahead to a rematch with CAL.

Disappointing result. DeSales won this game two years ago and lost by 3 last year. The Colts have a lot of young guys playing for the varsity now...2-A problem. I'm more curious about the game Thursday. DeSales' freshman class is loaded, but there's not 100 of them! :-) I'm curious to see how they compete.

If I'm reading things correctly, I think DeSales will travel to Glasgow in the second round. The Scotties look to be back to their form from 2-3 years ago. When DeSales won their first championship in 2013, their toughest game by far was against Glasgow. In fact, many Colts fans thought the season was coming to an end even into the 4th quarter.

I'm not too familiar with Caldwell this season, but I assume Mayfield should win this game by a couple of TDs???

Both teams agreed to a running clock from the opening kick. The starters only played two series. The game was over in an hour and 15 minutes.

I've been waiting for some "meat on the bones" conversation about 2-A. DeSales or CAL would have the tough task of defeating a top 3 team and then the #1 team just to GET to the state championship, where it appears they would face much stiffer competition than in recent years. Here's my honest take - in two of the past three years that DeSales has beaten CAL in the regional final, CAL had the better team (especially in 2014). DeSales' coaching staff is elite, and I think that has played a major role in the playoff victories. I also think there is a mental aspect to this. When we jumped out to a two TD lead on CAL last year, you could almost sense the "Oh no, not again" mentality. All that being said, there is a king of the mountain here, and we all know who it is. I just hope the Colts get the chance to even the score with Mayfield. That would mean we jumped a BIG hurdle.

Yawn....running clock most of the 2nd half. Props to Washington County's QB. Kid is a real athlete with very little help.

This is definitely one of the games I will have my eyes on Friday night!

I would love to see Danville for the sake of comparison. As we all know, defense wins championships, and I still think the 2-A champion will come from among the top three in the rankings for that reason.

Honestly, the past two years I have walked out of the CAL game wondering to myself, "How in the WORLD are we going to beat these guys in November?" In both of those regular season games, we were handled pretty easily. I don't feel that way this time. As I mentioned earlier, whether on purpose or not, we have weapons that were used very little if at all Friday night. CAL definitely has more star power individually, but I feel confident in our guys and our coaches. We still have five games to get our youngsters some more seasoning before a potential rematch, and it should be a good one if we get to that point!

The Colts, as they always seem to do in the regular season against CAL, didn't play their best hand on offense. They have some offensive weapons that were VERY under-utilized or not used at all. I really don't think they would have even played Pfaadt if they hadn't fallen behind 9-0 early. That practice has worked the last four seasons when we have met in November. I have trust in this coaching staff. Hopefully we can make it five in a row.

Game day is finally here! We need the student body to be on their toes today and clear the parking lot as quickly as possible once school is out this afternoon! :-)

Wow! That's...interesting! I sure hope that is student-driven. If not, it's just sad.

So, it's Wednesday. Here's my take on this game by position groups. Defense - front seven. This is one of CAL's strengths. D1 guy on the line, surrounded by other quality players. I would think it would be hard for the Colts to have much success running in the middle. Coming into the season, this was considered one of the biggest areas of concern for the Colts. However, this group has gotten better every week and frequently went to a nickel package against pass-happy North Hardin, yet still stopped the run with only six in the box. Defense - secondary I am unfamiliar with CAL's secondary other than they have Wright back there. I do believe there are no more Llewellyns (sp?) this year - they were ALL good. This is an extremely strong point for DeSales. They totally shut down North Hardin's passing attack. I seriously doubt that the Colts will play anyone this year that has a better secondary. Offense - Line DeSales has traded size and strength for speed and agility. The linemen have shown great improvement and opened big holes last week. CAL has always had good linemen, and I would expect no different this year. They will need to be able to protect Carr because if he is consistently pressured it will be bad news for the Centurions. Offense - skill positions CAL has young but experienced stars in Carr and Wright. They can be a lethal combination. The running game has some new faces, and CAL always has a balanced attack. DeSales is loaded here. At QB they have a traditional, steady, field general type and a young, athletic and fearless guy. Either could start Friday. They are extremely deep at RB and receiving positions. Summary DeSales has little in common with the team from last year. They rely on speed and aggressiveness on both sides of the ball. They are deep all over the field, consistently subbing 2,3,4 players between snaps on both sides of the ball. Could that depth become a factor in a close game in the 4th quarter? CAL is explosive and has play-makers. I think they will have to have some big plays to win this game, and they are entirely capable of that. They are the more experienced team, and they have owned the regular season matchups. Prediction - Can't pick against the Colts. I think they have improved drastically in the last three weeks, and the crowd is going to be crazy. There will be people waiting for the students to clear the parking lot after school so they can begin tailgating. I'll go with the Colts in a close one 20-17.

Agree with ColtPride on everything. Concession food is good and there's plenty of variety. One more thing on the parking. You can park for free in surrounding neighborhoods, but you will have a longer walk. Also, be sure not to block anyone's driveway. Every home game there has been an announcement about someone parking illegally.
