Lou Holtz told a great story once about when he was a young coach and they played Bobby Bowden’s WV team. WV ran it up. After the game, Holtz approached Bowden and said “why would you run it up? I thought we were friends.” Bowden’s reply “it’s not my job to keep me from scoring. It’s yours.” I’m paraphrasing a little, but that’s the story.

At a time of year when Mr Basketball starts to separate himself, Allen and Johnson are both hurt for a bit. Hope they both fully recover and don’t Rich themselves back. Bright futures for both of those guys.

If the losing team is still “competing” it’s totally ok. Also, if the winning team is playing the backups, it’s totally ok. You have to get those guys some experience too.

I hate the block/charge. Especially in these situations.

Hopefully Johnson isn’t out long, but if he is, and of the top 6 could mess around and win the region. Ballard’s defense is as good as its ever been, but if Walter Johnson isn’t making shots they struggle to score in the half court.

I like the young Bears. They’re fun to watch. They move the ball to the open guy and let it fly. But they have 3 massive flaws. If they aren’t hitting shots, they can’t beat anyone. They have no depth, and none to develop. And have no size.

At the risk of taking this thread further off track... Spencer didn’t have an impressive showing. 0-3 is 0-3. Rationalize any way you’d like. They played better than expected against a Ballard team that is still trying to figure out how to score, I’ll give you that. Then they lost to a team that was average at best, and capped it when they blew a 15 point second half lead and got held scoreless in their last game. How’s that progress?

Walton went 1-2. They lost to Brentwood in a consolation game. For some reason it isn’t on KHSAA yet.

I’ll second that, and add “over anyone in the state”

The whistle could always be an issue for them. They play a very physical style. I saw them this year, and a couple years ago at KOB. Different players. Same style.

Collins was focused and ready for this game. Johnson going out helped for sure. But they played much harder. With a lot more purpose. Great game plan by coach Gaither.

Ballard dominated start to finish. Their defense just smothered WV.

Completely agree. I wish we had a shot clock. But ultimately, if a team understands how to trap, or rotate man to man correctly, it’s hard to stall against them.

He says he isn’t playing. But I would think that he could if he wanted to. North Oldham is his home school. He played varsity there as an 8th grader before going to Trinity.

Ballard is playing young guys too. Including starting an 8th grader. That doesn’t usually happen in the 7th region. The youth excuse goes out the window for this one. The teams are definitely a contrast though. Will Spencer’s offense be able to dictate the game? Or will Renner have his defense clicking? It takes time to learn his defense. But once they have it, the chaos they create is fun to watch. Look forward to reading the updates.

Collins/Male is interesting to me because Collins has great guard play, and Gaithersburg does a good job of getting his teams prepared to play. They haven’t been on this stage before, so we’ll see. There are also rumors that Male has a little inner turmoil going on. Those things tend to rear themselves when the pressure is on.

Searching for an identity. They played 8-9 seniors last year. Replacing all of that experience with some young talented guys that haven’t had to deal with any adversity, it’ll take some time.
