Dugout chatter.... when is it too much?
The Scribe replied to cooperdad's topic in KY Baseball (High School)
I've always wondered why certain conduct is allowed in high school sports but not others. Can you imagine three guys at the free throw line yelling for the free throw shooter to miss it, but they can yell for the batter to swing? What about basketball players meeting in the circle and hugging after every point like they do in volleyball? Or basketball players yelling at the refs the way soccer players are allowed in soccer. -

Hopkinsville Police Officer Killed Tonight
The Scribe replied to halfback20's topic in Controversial Issues
Suspect had been indicted in three counties for drug trafficking and weapon charges. Has had multiple probation violation charges during that time. Was sentenced to 29 years in prison but because he was considered a "non-violent" offender, he was sent to a halfway house in Louisville. When he violated those terms and knew prison was likely in his future, he walked away last month never to return. There was an active warrant for him. It's another example of lawmakers changing the justice system in order to save a buck. This "non-violent offender" should have been in jail this week from THREE prior cases and was let out to continually break the law and sadly, take a life. If the justice system isn't going to enforce prison time and send them back to jail when they violate terms of probation and parole, just do away with it. -
In this day of one and done, what better recruiting tool than to have an all expense paid trip to Hawaii. I agree. I don't understand his logic on this one. I think it still date back to when he was at UMASS and came through Kentucky on his way back from the Great Alaska Shootout and got drilled. He blamed jet lag, etc.

Signs that the "Sweet 16" is Thriving or Declining
The Scribe replied to Mustang's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
There are several factors at play here. First, attendance began to decline when the KHSAA began live-streaming video. I wonder if their sponsorships cover the lost revenue from ticket sales. Second, every year or every other year, there was a good chance of watching a Cinderella story at play. Consolidation and the creation of Super-sized schools eliminates these except for maybe once in a decade. Third, the KHSAA has promoted the Sweet 16 as their 'cash cow' and they now have no choice but to make money. That means jacking up prices for everything. The argument against classification has been it will 'ruin the tradition and experience' of the Sweet 16. Attendance hasn't topped 100,000 since 2011. Three years ago, it was the lowest since the move to Rupp Arena. Fourth, Kentucky kids used to go to UK games and sit in the stands with the hopes of playing at Rupp Arena. Prices for UK games are so high now, most of the kids playing in the Sweet 16 probably never set foot into Rupp until their game. The mystique is dwindling. Fifth, there is so much anti-KHSAA sentiment that there are a lot of people who don't want to go and turn their money over to them. Sixth, penny-pinching on things such as eliminating programs and raising the broadcast fees of the local radio stations isn't helping. They have also changed their relationship with high school coaches and their ticket allotment. It used to be a weekend of networking and in some cases, a reward for underpaid assistants. Schools have not helped with some of their policy changes in allowing coaches to go. Seventh, why not make the Sweet 16 a boys'/girls' combo tournament? Four girls games Monday and Tuesday, four boys games on Wednesday and Thursday. Four girls games on Friday at 9/10:30/12/1:30 and four boys games at 3/4:30/6/7:30. Girls semifinals Saturday at 2/4 and boys at 6/8. Championships Sunday at 1 and 4. It's not just one thing, but cost and live streaming I think are the biggest two obstacles facing the KHSAA. -
Chris Whitney exceled in college and the pros but was not putting up monster numbers in high school. I think he was a late bloomer. Fred Cowan at Union County and Dwight Smith from Caldwell County are two others that weren't mentioned before

Yu Darvish to the Cubs
The Scribe replied to All State Baseball's topic in Major League Baseball (MLB)
Almora is the better CF than Happ. I think Happ ends up in right and Heyward is the overpaid, lefty PH off the bench until they can unload him. I can see them unloading him in a bad contract for bad contract trade that nets them a pitcher, like Matt Harvey, Scott Kazmir, or Edinson Volquez. As far as Darvish goes, they overpaid but that's the market. He has more left in the tank than Arrieta does. Arrieta is a quad or hamstring injury away from making a steep slide. I still wouldn't be surprised to see Russell or Baez traded in spring training for a top tier closer or #2 or #3 starter -
A fun drinking game is to drink every time someone says 'Jack'. If you can keep from passing out before Leo sinks, you win.

I read somewhere a few years back that the Cincinnati market has one of the highest Survivor TV viewership in the nation, which is why they try to cast someone from Ohio or Kentucky

What should the Browns do with 2 top 5 picks?
The Scribe replied to GrantNKY's topic in National Football League (NFL)
I'd take Vontae Mack and Ray Jennings. If you can trade to get Bo Callahan, do it, but I think he's a bust -

Livingston's Cameron Head hit a shot at the end of regulation that was waived off, although video proved he got it off with .3 seconds left. -

Basketball Classification
The Scribe replied to SnottieDrippen's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
If I have a son that plays soccer and a daughter that plays volleyball, why should they accept the fact that a sport they don't participate in decides how the championship of their sport is played? Is that right? -
Basketball Classification
The Scribe replied to SnottieDrippen's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
Three classes in every sport. Like sweet16 said, eight sections or regions for each class. I get that the Sweet 16 is the cash cow for the KHSAA. Just come out and say so. Don't say that it's about preserving tradition. -
A tournament for schools to large for the All-A Classic yet under 1,000 in enrollment is in the works for 2019. The 2A Classic could see 66 schools included. As of now, two-thirds have committed to play. 2A Classic Set to Launch in 219 for Basketball | Your Sports Edge

Big Baller Brand Served With Lawsuit For Failure To Pay Bill
The Scribe replied to Wireman's topic in BGP Break Room
So just another steal from a Ball.... -
The game has gotten so much faster at the high school level, which has caused regions to go to three man crews. Instead of two decent refs, a lot of times they will pair a bad ref with a decent crew or two bad refs with a good ref. Then, you have one ref having to overcompensate because a bad ref won't make the calls they should. It's one reason why the crews at region tournaments are better because the bad refs have been weeded out. The KHSAA has taken a huge hit in good refs in recent years because of the number opting to go the college route. They just haven't been able to replace them at the rate they are leaving. Another factor is simple. The younger generation just isn't taking an interest in becoming sports refs/umpires/officials like they did 20-25 years ago. A lot of new refs I see are in the 30-50 age group.
