Western Hills opened with a 24-20 loss to cross-town rival Franklin County, while Estill County got beat by Class 1A Paintsville 41-14

Tilghman choked one away in their one-point loss to McCracken County in Steve Duncan's coaching debut with the Tornado. They will welcome in the Tennessee Class 3A runner-up in Liberty Tech Magnet from Jackson.

Caldwell County's defense only gave up one touchdown in a 27-10 loss to Christian County last week. The Caldwell defense, anchored by the return of five linebackers from last year, figure to be the strength of the team. Joby Jaggers was 17-of-26 for 147 yards in his first start at QB. Graves County's backup quarterback Cody Goatley threw for 405 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-24 win over Murray. The over-under for this one is three hours. Incredibly, it will be the first meeting between these two western Kentucky schools

T.J. Maynard and the Red Devils open the 2017 campaign against Greenup County. The Musketeers opened their season last week by putting a running clock on the head of Lewis County. Russell edged Greenup 7-6 in the opener last year and have won six straight against Greenup.

Boyle County opened by thumping John Hardin 41-6. They play an enigma of a Waggener team that garners preseason praise yet fails to deliver. Waggener got hammered by Lexington Christian 40-14 last week. Waggener is 0-3 all-time against Boyle County, with all three meetings coming in the playoffs - the last time in 2015

LexCath opened the season with an impressive win over Madison Central, while CovCath hammered Ryle 47-19. Each team has won the last two meetings by a single point.

Central opened with a 7-0 win over 6A DuPont Manual last week, while Western drubbed North Oldham 41-9. Central is 6-5 all-time against Western but have won the last six games in the series. Western hasn't beaten Central since 1990.

Most Kentucky people hear Alcoa, TN and immediately think of Randall Cobb, the former UK player and current Green Bay Packer. But Alcoa has won two straight Tennessee state championships and lost two games in two years. The last time they visited Kentucky, they romped Middlesboro in 2011. They opened last week with a 30-14 win over someone named Grace Christian. Corbin opened with a 14-0 win over Whitley County that left some wondering if the margin shouldn't have been more. This is a great early season test for Coach Haddix and the Redhounds.

Belfry has won 30 straight games against Kentucky schools. The last team from the Commonwealth to beat them was Johnson Central in 2014. Each of the last two years, their only loss came to an out of state team. The Highlanders and Cabell Midland, who beat Belfry in 2015, are the lone out of state opponents on Belfry's schedule this year. The Class 3A Highlanders enjoyed some success a few years ago but shouldn't offer a hard challenge for the Pirates. Who ya got?

Hopkinsville returns everyone from a team that had last year's state champion Daviess County on the ropes before losing 2-1. #14 seems a bit low for them

In one half of play, Hoptown scored twice and had two scores called back due to penalty. Jay Bland and Gavin Marschand will be a nice tandem through the air for the Tigers this year.

Owensboro sacked the Hoptown quarterback in the end zone for the only points. Both defenses looked pretty good in this one
