Most Kentucky people hear Alcoa, TN and immediately think of Randall Cobb, the former UK player and current Green Bay Packer. But Alcoa has won two straight Tennessee state championships and lost two games in two years. The last time they visited Kentucky, they romped Middlesboro in 2011. They opened last week with a 30-14 win over someone named Grace Christian.

 

Corbin opened with a 14-0 win over Whitley County that left some wondering if the margin shouldn't have been more. This is a great early season test for Coach Haddix and the Redhounds.

This should be an outstanding game! I am pulling for Corbin, but the Alcoa v Marysville game is on my bucketlist of games I hope to get to one of these days!

I'm definitely rooting for the Hounds in this one, but, I'm afraid they likely overscheduled with this one.. Kudos to the Corbin folks who put this one together and for testing themselves like this.. Regardless of the outcome, the Hounds will learn a lot about themselves and will be better for it.. In saying that, Alcoa is a top notch team and program.. They'd likely be an overall Top 5-10 team in Ky, including all classes.. I think they'll make too many big plays on offense for Corbin to keep up, but, I hope I'm wrong.. I think it'll be something in this neighborhood:

A little information on Alcoa:

 

They are tied with Maryville (a school in the same county) with the most state championships in state history. Alcoa is a small school, around 600 students or so. They are the defending state champion in their classification in Tennessee. Alcoa is a separate city, but it's where the Knoxville airport is located.

 

The Alcoa-Maryville game is something to see. It was on ESPN a few years ago. Those two schools are about 5 miles apart, and in several years, they both won state titles in the same year in their respective classifications. Most times, that would be the only loss either team suffered all year.

 

Alcoa is very fast and athletic. Extremely well-coached. They aren't complicated, but they are physical and execute well. Physical, run-based team. They don't throw it much, but they hit big plays when they do.

Good ole MaxPreps, the gold standard for these out of state matchups seem to indicate a Hounds win is possible if not probable.
