Big win for Coach Belcher and the Wildcats! They seem to have found their shooting stroke the last two games. I think it's a little premature though to be "seeding" the 38th District in December and giving Pendleton County the #2 spot when they may be #1 now. This will be all about the draw as it always is. -

Jackets struggled offensively in first half without leading-scorer, Tyler Newton. Newton has an elbow injury from a hard foul and fall late in the Pendleton County game on Saturday. His status is unknown for the next game, a district showdown, with Robertson County on Friday night. Full court pressure and 7 charges taken were the difference in the second half. Ben Duncan and Dillon Webb add 8 apiece and freshman, Spencer Morris and sophomore, Trent Letcher chip in 4 each to spark Nicholas County to victory. Devin Trussell goes for 10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 charges taken, and 3 steals. -

This game was about how well PC shot tonight. They had been shooting about 33% from the field coming in. They couldn't miss. They made several shots at or beyond the college 3-pt line with NC defenders close. Allen is going to be a special player. Probably be at a private school or Scott County soon. PC was very physical and much stronger inside. Nicholas continues to miss easy shots at point blank range that is costing them. Duncan has had two games in a row that were big offensively, but his defense is not as good when he's in that mode. He sets the tone for the team on defense. Nicholas is struggling to find the inside presence it had with Fryman and Keaton last year. As far as Gaskins "holding Newton in check", I'll just say his teammates don't work hard enough to get him easier shots. He has to get most of his on his own. One AAU coach at the game told me the same thing and said he would score 25-30 every night the way he shoots it if they would look to get him easier shots. He made 5 of 9 shots tonight and found his way to the FT line drawing at least 5 PC fouls. Just like this week, he's had to pull up or step back to NBA range to get a look. He still finished with 20. Stats have him at 13 for 26 from 3-pt. the last 3 games. Kid has a stroke. Ask Danville, Augusta, and even Pendleton. I don't think talking with Coach Newton that he is worried about where Pendleton was ranked or even where his team is ranked in pre-season. He is focused on improvement with his club, consistent post play, getting better defensively, and being ready at district time this year if they draw the Cats or the Breds. -

Hats off to Augusta and their second half effort. Love to see a rematch in the All A, but it would have to be in the finals. It was obvious by their interaction before and after the game that Coach Hinson and Coach Newton have mutual respect for each other and their teams. Fun game to watch. -

Nicholas gets no calls at home. Augusta outscores Nicholas at the FT line by nine with 17 attempts and NC with only 6 attempts....the difference in the game. Nicholas showed it has at least three who can score double digits (Newton, Duncan, and Trussell) and if they can get one more inside, they will keep improving and finish with wins. Nicholas has played GRC, Harrison (keeping Thompson to season-low 17 pts.), loses to one of the top 5 12th Region teams in Danville, and now has an undefeated Augusta on the ropes tonight. Augusta defeats RC, SG, St. P, and is 6-0. Need to see what they do when their schedule gets tougher soon. Coach Newton had his team prepped and ready with best first half performance since his arrival. He made adjustments too in the second half. Fell behind and fought back. This Bluejacket team should be peaking at the right time as they get more scoring to go with Tyler Newton. It's still early for NC. -

Jackets fell behind by 21 points in the first half and managed to get it back to 14 at half. Adjustments at halftime and better intensity cut the lead to 4 points in the 4th, but Danville hit FT's down the stretch to hang on for their 4th straight win (after winning the Berea Tip-Off this past weekend). This is a very balanced and athletic Admirals team, which placed 5 players in double figures. The Jackets held Woolridge to 14 points (averaging 23 points) and Spencer McKinney scoreless. Jackets are improving. They were sick last week against GRC with flu and strep throughout the team. Led tonight by Tyler Newton's 24 points on 7-14 shooting, including 6 for 11 from 3-pt. range (3 were NBA line). He's continued his high FT% with 15 for 18 after three games. Ben Duncan has been very consistent, chipping in 10 points and barely missing a double-double with 9 rebounds. As Devin Trussell wears off the rust from 2 years off and becomes more consistent (16 points against Harrison Co.), the Jackets will have the three scorers they need night in and night out. Elijah Barnett has to be more active and crank up his motor for them to reach their season goals of the 10th Region tournament. They have started with 6A Clark, 4A Harrison, and now a "hot" Danville team. No patsies on this schedule. Augusta up next at home on Thursday. -

Finished 3-3. Played entire week without top post player, Barnett, and tow other players, who were out due to injuries/illness. Beat Robertson twice (one by more than 15). Lost to St. Pat on late shot. Lost to Fleming County twice. Both were close games. Participants included: Robertson, Fleming, St. Pat, Bath, and Nicholas. -

Nicholas has tough schedule in December. If they come through it well, it could catapult them to a strong season. The good thing for them is they play 5 of first 6 at home. 12/2 GRC (H) 12/5 Harrison (A) 12/8 Danville (H) 12/11 Augusta (H) 12/13 Pendleton (H) 12/16 Western Hills (H) 12/19 Robertson (A) 12/20 Estill Co.@Rowan Co.-KY Bank Classic 12/29-31 Greenup Co. I like this team and its potential. They will be tough in the 9th Region this season. I saw them play Nicholas County last season in the first round of the Bracken County tournment. It was a shoot out between Snapp (31 points) and Nicholas' Newton (35). Lost 84-81 but Snapp is a player that can score from anywhere on the court. His range seemed like it was out to mid-court. Price and Covington make this team dangerous in 2014-15.

Coach Newton will be happy to play the overlooked, underdog role I'm sure. They will have 5 or 6 seniors, led by senior Tyler Newton (15 ppg last season). He was voted to the All-10th Region team (Honorable Mention) with Scott Keaton and should be even better next season. I hear he has been adding strength and shooting lights out. He has been playing AAU for the Bluegrass Thunder team. Several schools are recruiting him steady at this point. He will have fellow seniors, Ben Duncan and Dillon Webb with him in the back-court. Duncan was a little banged up this summer, but added tremendous rebounding and defense. Webb shot the ball well in June and does the little things that NC needs to be successful. Christian George is another senior that can play and was out most of June. In the front-court, Nicholas County lost Logan Fryman and Keaton to graduation, but the cupboard is not bare. Juniors Elijah Barnett and JP Wagoner will be joined by senior Drake Vice and freshman Dakota Ring to pick up the inside game. I hear Barnett could be a big surprise in the 10th this season after working through some health issues he has been dealing with for a couple of years. They will be deep with sophomore guards Logan Stafford, Trent Letcher, and Wes Sapp counted on off the bench. Freshmen guard, Spencer Morris, will be a kid to watch this season and for years to come in Carlisle. He can do a lot of things well and has been in the gym this summer. He is joined by freshman, Sam Hamilton and inside player. Dakota Ring. If anyone is to push Harrison in the 38th, it may be Nicholas County. The Jackets had good wins last season over Bourbon, Robertson, Newport. Pike Co. Central, and Frankfort. They finished in the top half of the 10th Region in wins and lost two hard fought, low-scoring battles in the final 2 minutes to RC in the All-A and 38th district tournaments. -

In the 11th, Henry Clay-Bryan Station is always a great one going back to Lee-Givens in the 70's. Lex. Catholic and LCA could be a good one this coming season. LCA could be the favorite with what they return. I believe the Eagles beat them once last season. -
Interesting to see that no one is giving Nicholas County any hope for 14-15. Coach Newton will be happy to play the overlooked, underdog role I'm sure.
