I'm sure their coach feels the same way. Keaton kid is the difference in how they play. Tyler Newton has been consistent all season, but Jackets are better when he shows up to play. He was a non-factor today. Got himself in early foul trouble (3 in first half) with tough call on first one and two silly fouls before intermission. Scores 25 against Bath (win), double digits in all three Bracken County tourney games----wins, had 30 against Williamstown--win. He has to be the difference for them. Finished with 5 points today in loss. Wasn't that he didn't get the ball either.

Congrats to Robertson County! Dawson Cooper played an outstanding game for the Black Devils with 24 points. Nicholas County was led by Tyler Newton with 16 points.

Model is as athletic as any team you will see. They played as well as they can play. Nicholas shot under 25% for the game from the field. Some of it was Model, some of it was Nicholas' bad shot selection. Nicholas had won five in a row after getting all of their players back from injury and sickness. Really their first clunker at full strength.

Keaton and Fryman also deserve credit for Nicholas County's success through mid-season. Keaton has been playing very well inside the past 5 games for the Jackets (including 19 against Pike Co. Central, 30 against Wiiliamstown, and 22 against St. Patrick). Fryman has double-digit rebounds every night and plays very good defense. Newton leads team with 18.5 average and 85% FT shooting while Keaton at 14.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg. This team is getting healthy and playing better each night.

Keaton with 22 points, Newton with 18 points, Saunders with 9 points, Duncan with 6 points, and Fryman with 5 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Jackets. Improves their record to 7-4.

Jackets led SG for almost 29 minutes and went cold shooting. SG made FT's down the stretch. NC missed some shots they would normally make. Have had consistent play from Newton, Fryman, and Webb in first 9 games. A consistent Keaton and a healthy Duncan and Saunders makes them a legit team.

Nicholas wins first tourney in quite some time. Jackets led in scoring by tourney MVP, Tyler Newton, with 26 points. He scored 24 in the second half on 20 of 22 at FT line after being moved to point guard spot at half. Nicholas only played 5 players all second half until 11 seconds to go. Scott Keaton had a huge game with 19 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. Tyler Newton scored 76 points and Scott Keaton added 47 points for the tourney. First three games that Nicholas has been able to dress all of its players. Still have two players (Duncan and Saunders) coming back from injuries that caused them to miss multiple games in tough losses to Pendleton and Silver Grove.

Nicholas County was led in scoring by junior, Tyler Newton with a career-high, 35 points. Did this on 15 shots. Was 5 of 6 from 3-pt. line and 12 of 14 at FT line. Scott Keaton had 18 points and 11 boards and Logan Fryman had 14 points and 11 boards. Ethan Snapp, sophomore for Newport, had 31 points for the Wildcats. Snapp had 20 and Newton had 22 each in first half. Very fun game to watch. This tourney has had several first round "upsets". Semis tomorrow: Burgin vs. Nicholas County and Carroll County vs. Pike County Central.

Nicholas County was playing without starting point guard, Saunders, who was injured in scrimmage. He returns on Wednesday for play. The Bluejackets trailed 49-27 in the fourth quarter and showed lots of heart by going on a 15-1 run. The score was 50-42 with 2:10 to go. Nicholas missed a three-pointer that could have cut it to five points and were forced to foul from there. Free throws were lopsided. Nicholas went 7 for 10 and GRC shot 21 for 32 at the line. Basically, the difference in the game.

Newton is new Nicholas County coach. He was assistant at Tates Creek and Owen County before becoming a head coach. He started the East Jessamine program then moved over to LCA. He was a varsity assistant last year at Bath County.

I heard the administration at THNS did not contact GCHS about Youngman before hiring him. GCHS is glad to have rid themselves of a nomadic coach that over-promised and under-delivered.

Greenup County beats Lawrence County 9-2 tonight. Looks like the Musketeers may be getting it together at the right time for another run at the regional title. Ashland, Lewis County, Boyd County and East Carter have to be considered contenders. It looks WIDE open this year.

Raceland has hired Randy Vanderhoof (former football coach and current baseball coach) and Greenup County hired Mark Cantrell (formerly at Elliott County). Vanderhoof replaces Bob Trimble who moved over to the boys job for the Rams.

Greenup County has hired former Elliott County coach, Mark Cantrell, to take over the Lady Musketeers program. He did good things with the EC program while he was there.

Greenup County shocked the Russell Red Devils and won the 63rd District tournament this year. Lost a close one in a tough first round game to a good West Carter in the first round of the 16th Region tourney. Looks like it was a good hire after all.
