- Who will be next Highlands Basketball Coach?
Not so fast. Lets dissect this. Good program to struggling? Highlands is by no means at the bottom of the heap. This can be turned around. In fact 20 wins next year is obtainable. Tough district? Newcath is still on top for certain. Then what? I don't think Highlands has any tougher road than Colerain to a deep playoff run as things stand right now. Ohio pay vs KY? No argument. ......but..... Don't forget head coach pay vs asst. coach pay. That will make up some of the difference. Things like camps can make up more of the distance. Retirement? I think he may have more years in the KY system from his days at Bellevue, Boone, and NKU. This may be a wash. Also keep in mind that you don't really loose everything. You can opt to let those years sit in case you choose to return to OH at some point. And you do get to withdraw everything that you personally contributed and roll to an IRA or other qualified plan if you so choose. I already mentioned head coach vs assistant. This is a no brainier. Perhaps the most important factor, and one that cannot be ignored is the teaching environment. This is night and day. No knock on Colerain here, but at Highlands you get small classes, prepared students, parental involvement, community support, high academic standard, and administrative support. None of which is entirely unique to Highlands, but there are few that can match it. Not as big a jump as some might think.- Mike Flynn Resigns From Highlands
Can't divulge, but one name is mentioned in this thread.- Who will win 6A District in Northern Kentucky in 2013?
Not easy, just made to look easy. That's the way it is when you put in the work. Your talking about teams that are better than yours. Does not matter the class.- Mike Flynn Resigns From Highlands
Interviews must be in the works. I don't know who all is in but I know some were given the polite thank you applying call today.- Mike Flynn Resigns From Highlands
Jack do you want a coach or a good coach? Exactly one month after the old coach resigned there is a committee, a list of applicants, and a schedule for interviews. You take out spring break and this is all accomplished in three short weeks. Constructive criticism? I think I just read that two coaches were there watching 8 guys practice. At least one of those guys is an applicant and may be the next head coach. I think that is covered. If they didn't have a coach for another month, they could knock the dust off of those weights, do agility drills, and then roll a ball out on the floor for some pick up games and be better off for that. We are talking open gym in April. Not even talkin bout practice..... Patience please.- Dominique Hawkins to UK
Some may think it a mistake, but Cal understands the value of having local talent around his superstars. Willis and Hawkins are not all Americans, but they are also not chopped liver. They are legit D1 talent that teams like WKU build tournament teams around. Asked not to carry a team, but to make a contribution is well within their abilities. The larger roll that they will grow into is that of homegrown talent with passion for Kentucky basketball that they will impart on the McD's that otherwise would not understand. Though they may never lead the team in points, boards, etc., they will become leaders in ways that are just as valuable. Senior day for these two is going to be something very, very special.- (Manual) "a sterling reputation for football"
Still ranking in the top ten all time in wins is 'sterling'. The existence of Trinity is 'tarnishing'- Moeves Boys - Walton - Newport Central Catholic - Covington Catholic
No reference on my part to WV previous coach. Have not seen them practice ever, not seen a WV game in person in two years, and not had conversation w/ previous coach in several years. I have seen Brannen's work and like much of what I have seen. My coments related to coaching and why kids want to change programs. Interesting how true the words ring after seeing the tapes on the Rutgers situation this morning.- Moeves Boys - Walton - Newport Central Catholic - Covington Catholic
I don't care if you put it all in one paragraph or one sentence. You spelled out a reality that many do not want to hear. Simple truth is that all coaches are not alike and neither are all kids. Not everyone responds to a particular style of coaching. Quite frankly, I have seen and heard coaches do things, and say things while coaching high school kids that are simply unacceptable. I know a coach that told a kid that he was welcome to try out, but that he would never make the team because he had been injured most of the previous season and recovered to slowly in the coach's eyes. I have seen kids cursed, ridiculed, embarrassed, and badgered. All done to motivate them to play better i guess. No way on this earth do I let my child play for such a person. I would instantly transfer him to a place where he could be coached, improved, motivated, pushed, and promoted. Those coaches exist and their programs prosper.- Breandon Johnson #74 (Holmes High School )
I like the way he plays. I am concerned about his form on the lift in the video. Look forward to seeing him play again next season.- Moeves Boys - Walton - Newport Central Catholic - Covington Catholic
Comparing ACT scores of public schools and private schools is apples and oranges. Private schools take and retain who they choose. Special needs? Sorry, this school is not for you. Pounding your chest about the scores of your selected students is insulting.- Newport Central Catholic 2013 Schedule
Dale said he would not break an existing contract with Boyle. Nor was he willing to give Gamble a payday and let him have the Boyle game. Highlands v NCC week zero at DCM next year could have made huge $$$$. $12 a ticket and it would sell out in two days of pre sale. About a fifty grand profit. But NCC said no.- Newport Central Catholic 2013 Schedule
Agreed, Ashland RB's will be the best NCC will see this year. Most of the O line graduated. Last years OL was very good.- Newport Central Catholic 2013 Schedule
Tough way for a new coach to open. I see the possibility of an 0 - 5 start. That being said, they may go undefeated in district play and wind up a 1 seed at 4 - 6.- Is it an advantage to be held back
Speaking from my own experience I can say that I could have benefitted in a big way. I turned 17 in the latter half of my senior season and finished the year at 6' , 175lbs., at least in the roster listing. One year later at 6'2" , 215lbs. I think I may have been a better player. Two years later I would have started the season at 18 and been eligible. At 6'2" ,230 and waaaay stronger than two years prior, things would have been very, very different. We are talking man vs. boy difference. That 19 year old may be competing against a 14 year old sophomore. No doubt there is an advantage.- Campbell County/Nicholas County Updates
Camels win!- "who is the greatest Head coach in Ky history"
You might want to look at Mueller's record prior to arrival at Highlands. Withrow was 0-10 prior to his arrival & 10-0 three years later. Sycamore was everybody's whipping boy. When Dale arrived, Moeller's Klonne was the speaker at the Sycamore sports banquet. They were losers and quite OK with that. Dale changed the culture and actually had a winning season before leaving for Highlands. How would he do at Jenkins or Clinton? Better than anyone else ever has by a huge margin.- Campbell County 47 Bishop Brossart 42
Wow! And a movie scene reference. Where have I seen that before?- Has Chuck Smith applied at Boone County?
Please read the whole post. My post said that Chuck enjoyed favorable conditions during his tenure. That does not in any way mean that he walked into anything, good or bad. It means that the conditions during his tenure were better than what they are, and can be over the foreseeable future at Boone. That has nothing to do with Chuck's ability. It has everything to do with constraints, mostly financial, that do and wii exist at Boone. Boone will win more with Chuck than they have of late because Chuck is a better coach than Rick. He is a better coach than Owen for that matter ( here comes more fury my way). The football situation is better at Boone now than it was at Boyle then. The football future will be better with Chuck than it has been. My only point, and the one that some folks take exception to, is that the level of success that Chuck had at Boyle will not be repeated at Boone. There are a great number of factors as to why and I have covered some of them. Please stop taking that as a shot at Chuck. It has nothing to do with him. Again, read the whole post.- Has Chuck Smith applied at Boone County?
Where in anything that I have ever written have you seen me say anything negative about Chuck Smith. Now you have me classified as a 'hater.' You criticize what you called my 'disputable facts,' and in the next sentence cite Chuck's six,....sorry you said," SIX state championships." My point is simply that if Chuck were to take the Boone job he will not find the favorable conditions that existed during his tenure at Boyle. I fully understand the economic differences between Boone and Boyle Counties. You said the median hosehold income was double in Boone compared to Boyle. Though there is a disparity it is not double. If you had any understanding of school economics you would know that the Kentucky Education Reform Act of 1990 has wrecked havoc on Boone County Schools economically. In the 23 years of KERA Boone County Has been the fastest growing county in the state of KY. With that they have built two new high schools, middle schools and numerous elementary schools, as well as additions to existing schools. All at a cost exceeding $100 million dollars. All the while the state of KY continues to take more tax dollars from Boone County than it spends there. With added income comes added cost of living. Simply said, Boone County has no financial advantages to offer and in fact is terribly constrained by finances. I could go on but that is for another forum. When someone does not share your opinion it does not make them a 'hater.' I have conversed with Chuck Smith many times and have all of the respect in the world for him. Hate is a strong word and one that could seldom be applied to me. Please go back and review my posts and find hate. It's not there. I hope that Chuck is offered and accepts the Boone job. I think for Boone to change in ways that are necessary they need a guy with the track record, conviction, and coaching style to make that change happen. I expect that Boone would be successful in ways that they have not experienced often. I feel that with Chuck at the helm that Boone could, in an exceptional year, they could actually win a state title. Something they could not accomplish with their best effort featuring one of KY's greatest ever players. Pardon me for thinking that it is not an automatic that a level of success that has only occurred twice before is impending with Chuck and Boone county.- Has Chuck Smith applied at Boone County?
You contradict yourself. And prove that I am right. Boyle County Schools has one high school. Danville is an Independent District. Being a one school system, as opposed to Boone which has four high schools, all of your energy and resources go to that one school. There are no others to consider. If you buy for one do you have to do the same for others. He'll Boone turned down a free turf field because they could not provide the same for their other schools. It's like having one child vs four. Please don't tell me about Boyle's lack of facilities. I have been to many games at Boyle and the Bermuda there was nice. The facilities are very good. A field house! A field house for heavens sake. You need to get out and see what bad facilities are.- Has Chuck Smith applied at Boone County?
Ru, I know your excited about the prospect of what might be, but don't let that cloud your better judgement. Use your training. Stay calm. Think things through. Rational calculated decisions. I know that you are aware that Boyle did not become Boyle overnight. Circumstances at Boone are not what they were at Boyle 15, 20 years ago. Boyle then was a one high school district with an administration hell bent on building a winning program. Brand new facilities and support in every imaginable way. Today's Boone county is nothing like that. If Chuck is looking to find that type of situation at Boone he will be sorely disappointed. What Chuck will find is a chance to compete annually. In good years he will make a deep playoff run. If Chuck spins magic, in the right year he can compete with the likes of T,X,& H. - Who will be next Highlands Basketball Coach?
