45. duPont Manual High School (Louisville, KY)

 

duPont (sic) Manual High School, a public, magnet high school, began in 1892 as an all-male vocational training school.

 

The school has excellent academics, and a sterling reputation for football. The school has won five state titles and two national championships—one of the best records in high school football.

Still ranking in the top ten all time in wins is 'sterling'. The existence of Trinity is 'tarnishing'

When was their last title?

 

Manual has been good but they have very little or nothing to show for it in a long time. If the same was true of their recent academic accomplishments no one would be calling it sterling.

1966, which doesn't enhance the argument much.

 

To my mind, they do have an outstanding reputation for football, but St. Xavier has long been a problem and the rise of Trinity in the late 1960's definitely didn't help. And Male's dominance through the 1990s and into the 2000s REALLY doesn't help.

 

Don't know. Maybe by the standards of the 50 best public schools in America, it does appear sterling.

Shouldn't Manual be better in football than they are? Being a magnet public school in a metropolitan area with great academics, how do they not get top level football talent to attend? If there is any public school in the state that can challenge St. X and Trinity, they should be the one IMO.

They do a good job of attracting the best academic talent from around the area at the displeasure of schools in the areas their students live but they haven't been able to do like Redman did at Male to attract the best athletic talent.

I work with a bunch of Male and Manual kids, and they always argue over whose school is "better". From a football standpoint, it's Male no question. I've always had a gut feeling Manual was the better academic school, but I'm not sure why.

When I lived in Lville you had Brohm QB at Trinity, Bush QB at Male and Kennan Burton QB at Manual. Those 3 put on some shows!
