How often do you have to watch to know it? :sssh:

-it was kickoff return not punt return. It basically negated the Boone score. In fact, since BW converted the PAT and Boone didn't it extended the lead. -Boone ate up a ton of time on the touchdown drive and the drive that ended with the interception at the beginning of the 4th quarter. The only time that Beechwood had the ball in the 3rd quarter was during the kickoff return (approx 15 seconds). I think Boone even used 3-4 minutes for the 30 yd drive that ended on the 1 yd line. I think that only really left 2-3 possessions for Beechwood in the 4th quarter. -In the fourth quarter I think Beechwood stayed conservative knowing it would take Boone lots of time to score and being up 14 points they had the luxury of being able to do that. -The game was won in the first 15 minutes of the game when Beechwood went after Boone. I think it surprised them. -What were the Boone mistakes? Beechwood could have had the fatal error after Boone went 3 and out on their first drive and got hit by the short punt allowing Boone to cross midfield and continue the drive.

Don't know where you got that for small schools? Last 2 years it has been the top four teams making the playoffs with #1 vs #4, #2 vs #3 and the winners playing the following week. The schedule I saw had 10/20 as the playoff game and 10/27 as a championship game. Since there are only 5 teams in the small school division this year, all but one will play in the playoff game. The teams are Beechwood, Holmes, Holy Cross, Newport Central Catholic, Scott. Lloyd and Newport could not field freshman teams this year.

I heard Fieger and Combs just turned 13 in August so they could have been 7th graders. Schmidt (now freshman) played 8th grade with Spartans. Combs came to Beechwood last year, don't know where he played prior. A lot of the 8/9th graders were Spartans. A few played in the FTJFL.

Ever hear of Joey Nussbaum from Beechwood? Not sure anyone has been able to return one of his kicks yet this season. They will be on the same field Saturday! Congrats to Evan! What is his practice/game schedule like every week?

Based on the postings I thought Boone would be too much for Beechwood. Compared to last year think Boone looked more athletic this year. This Beechwood team surprised me. Might have to go to all the games this year. They are fun to watch! Boone won the coin toss and deferred to 2nd half. Seemed critical when you consider what happened at end of first half and beginning of 2nd. 6-0 Beechwood (didn't get time of score) 35 yd pass Fieger (11) to Slusher (14) PAT Kick no good 13-0 Beechwood (1:05 1st) 1 yd run Talley (34) Pat good Burns (87) Kick Of note was this was set up on a 25 yd play action pass from Fieger (11) to Combs (82) down to the 1 yd line. Boone was totally fooled on the play. Beechwood stopped boone on 1st and goal from 3. Fourth down ended with 1:40 left in the second. Boone Started 2nd half with long drive eating up 6:40 13-6 Beechwood (3:20 3rd) 1 yd run Floyd (26) PAT conversion failed 20-6 Beechwood (3:05 3rd) 80 yd kickoff return Fieger (11) Pat good Burns (87) Kick Boone then had Drive stopped inside the 20 by interception by Burns (87) on the first play of the 4th quarter. Beechwood went 3 and out that ended with a smart intentional offensive pass interference by Slusher (14). Boone was clearly going to intercept and possibly return for TD. Interference cost Beechwood yardage but prevented score. Boone got the ball after punt around the Beechwood 30 yd line. Long slow drive to the goal line ended in another Beechwood goal line stand which ended with 6:07 left in the game. Beechwood eeked out more 2 first downs and finally got stopped on 3rd down at the Beechwood 35 yd line with 1:40 left. Coach Chevalier called a fake punt which went Talley (34) to Slusher (14) for a first down. Beechwood killed the clock with a final score of 20-6. What I heard about this team is true. I wouldn't call any of them "studs" but a bunch of kids who work hard and play hard. In the first half Slusher (14) and Etler (75) played very well defensively. The defensive line play was phenomenal considering the size of Boone county. I think Mahorney (79), Arlinghaus (62), Stokes (85), Combs (82) would also be thrown in there. Beechwood kickers (Talley (34) punting, Burns (87) Kickoffs) did a great job keeping the ball away from the dangerous Boone players. Only one punt return was substantial and that was aided by facemask penalty. Fieger (11) played very well at quarterback, especially considering he is an 8th grader. Fieger (11) muffed the kickoff after the Boone TD and it almost looked like Boone could recover but he scooped it up and ran around the outside for the TD. Schmidt (31) didn't have any break away runs but did a good job holding onto the ball and getting a few yards at a time. Bankemper (30) got a few carries and also did a good job on defense. Beechwood freshman coaches did an excellent job. (Chevalier, Rhino, Riely, Whilhoff) This is the way I saw it. Hope you feel it is accurate.

Fieger, Slusher and Combs are 8th graders on Guru's list. I will try to give you a "TOG" summary when I can get it together.

I think this is what I saw at the NCC game 8th graders Birindelli - subs on defense Fieger - QB, subs some on defense Slusher - reciever, linebacker (in rotation) Bankemper - Running back (in rotation), linebacker (in rotation) Rowe - subs ocassionally on defense line Combs - TE, DE don't know if I missed someone. So a lot I would only say Fieger, Slusher, Bamkemper and Combs. The other two do contribute.

As far as I can tell the Beechwood team doesn't have "standout" talent but instead has a lot kids that work hard and play hard. I think they have a decent tailback in Jake Scmidt but I don't he is quite as good as Mitch Thomas last year, Gage Erdman/Max Nussbaum prior year.....and Cameron Vocke the year before that. He is good but not to that next level yet. Agree with VOR on Mahorney, he is smarth tough player!

I'd think Beechwood would have to play near perfect to pull of the upset.
