NKY Frosh Playoff questions?

Featured Replies

I have asked several people and don't have any consensus on how it works. Is there a two team playoff, a four team playoff, something different? And how do you decide who enters the playoffs since all the eligible teams don't play each other. Also, when a big school loses to a small division school (Boone losing to Beechwood for example) does that loss affect Boone's playoff standing or since it was a big school/small school match up does it have no bearing on the playoffs?

Thanks in advance.

It is a two team playoff, however last year CovCath and Campbell each had 1 lost and had a playoff game.

I wish they go to a four team playoff like they had two years ago.

I do not know the answer to the other question.

I think that there is a one game championship for the small school division and a one game championship for the large school division. The 2 schools with the best record against the schools in their class will play for the title.

All the large schools (Boone, Campbell, Conner, Cooper, CovCath, Dixie, Highlands, Ryle, and Simon Kenton) play each other. The 2 with the best record in those 8 games will play for the title. Boone's loss to Beechwood and Highlands loss to Trinity do not matter.

The only problem is that everyone does not play everyone else, if the schedule I saw is correct Dixie does not play Boone.

So it is possible that that Boone or Dixie go undefeated against the larger schools and 2 schools with 1 lost, or we could have three schools with 1 lost.

It changes just about every year. Not sure why? Some years it has been the 2 teams with the best records. Some years they have an east and a west. Teams with the best record from east and west play. Some years they have 4 teams. #1 from east plays #2 from west and #2 from east plays #1 west. And the winners play for the Championship. Haven't heard what they are doing this year?? This is for the big schools.

Don't know where you got that for small schools? Last 2 years it has been the top four teams making the playoffs with #1 vs #4, #2 vs #3 and the winners playing the following week. The schedule I saw had 10/20 as the playoff game and 10/27 as a championship game. Since there are only 5 teams in the small school division this year, all but one will play in the playoff game. The teams are Beechwood, Holmes, Holy Cross, Newport Central Catholic, Scott. Lloyd and Newport could not field freshman teams this year.

I guess I'm going to have to check with my sources, it appears I'm wrong on both accounts.

Dixie scheduled to play Ryle twice and no Boone on the schedule. Makes no sense.

C-boy is correct for last year--2 teams with best record in each division play off. In last year's case, it was supposed to be decided with coin flip, but in fairness to 2 teams with same record had a play off. I agree they should go back to a 4 team play off.

It would not matter if we had a 4 team playoff IMO

Has anyone been able to figure out exactly how this will work out?

I talked to a head coach of one of the large school teams.

He said it is supposed to be the 2 schools with the best record against the large schools from N KY. I mentioned that not all teams play each other-- he was aware of that. He added that no team is permitted to play more than 10 games, so if a playoff or added game is needed (ie Dixie vs. Boone) those teams would have to drop a game to avoid playing an 11th game.

We will have to wait a few more weeks to see if this mess sorts itself out on its own.

I want to be sure I understand you, do you mean the two large schools with the best record?

And if anyone knows who makes this decision or who is in charge of it please let me know on here and I will be glad to contact them and get the exact answer?

Dale Mueller.....

Just Kidding!

With the games this week it appears that many could have one loss when trying to figure the playoffs for the large school division. What are the current records and what are the remaining "big" games? Is Cov Cath and dixie the only unbeatens?

I mean the 2 large schools with the best record against the other large schools. Again, this is as clear as mud since Boone plays Ryle twice and does not play Dixie. Not sure if both Ryle/Boone games count, and how Dixie and Boone would fair if they got into a tiebreaker situation with another school ( since one of them would have to lose if they played each other).

Covcath not undefeated, they have a loss to Dixie.

If Dixie runs the table it is possible for a 2 loss team to make the championship. Stay tuned.
