I'll agree with you there. Even the best official has an off day. For the most part however, the deeper you go in the playoffs, the officiating pool should be more experienced. Especially with regard to the officials from Louisville, Northern Ky, and Lexington. However, there are parts of the state that don't have as many officials, and those assignors really have no choice but to send younger/less experienced officials out in the playoffs.

I doubt that there was anyone at the game grading the officials unless it was the local assignor who works for Holmes. If your an official, you had a heart beat, or you could fog a mirror last week, you were working in the first round of the KHSAA playoffs. I'm not saying that the officials that worked the game were poor, but until the KHSAA restructures the football playoff system, it's possible that you'll have less than experienced officials working the first round of the playoffs.

Mike, good luck and I wish you the best. You were passionate and decicated to your players and school. I always enjoyed officiating your games. You always treated my crew well, regardless of the outcome. I truly wish you the best.

I'm happy for the Dixie players that they won, but I'm disappointed that the Dixie administration is allowing a certain player to continue playing in the playoffs. I believe that anyone who is familiar with the program knows what I'm referring to.... IMO, it's a poor reflection on the school. Oh well, such is life.

As long as the ball crossed the plane of the goal line in possession of the receiver, it's a TD. It's clear that the player controlled the ball in the field of play and that he made a football move after he caught the ball. Once the ball crossed the goal line, the ball became dead by rule, TD.

There is no rule that dictates that a measurement "has" to be granted whenever a coach request one. It varies. If it appears that the ball is close to the line to gain, and you're on a poorly marked field, a field that has a huge crown on it, a muddy field, or you simply can't tell, most Rs will bring the chains out and take measurement. It’s much easier on the new turf fields since most umpires, or at least the experienced ones, will start each new series on a line. If you start on a line, you'll end on a line, and a measurement isn't necessary. For instance, if you start a series on the -22 (going out), you know that you have to get to the -32 for a first down. Even then, if it’s a close game, and there is a question about whether a first down has been gained, some Rs will take a measurement.

Yeah that happens all the time. Matter of fact, the official decided that he want to screw up a game and this was it! Are you out of your mind? Walk a day in his shoes and make the call!

The announcer should try to officiate a game. It's a bit more difficult he might expect.

While I agree that there are "some" lazy officials who officiate for no other reason than get a game check, the vast majority of officials in Ky are hard working ladies and gentlemen who are sincere & dedicated and officiate for the love of the game, the schools, and the student athletes. I know for a fact that in Northern Ky, the officials of the NKOA are held accountable. Matter of fact, the person in charge of the Northern Ky officials has suspended several officials throughout the years for various infractions. Also, the head trainer for that association reviews every game film, and grades the officials on their collective and individual performances. The officials are also rated by the coaches and are evaluated during a game at least once or twice a year, depending on the availability of the evaluator. As far as working on crews, I don’t think that there is anything better than working with the same crew each week. I honestly believe that working with the same officials each week promotes stability. More often than not, if a crew member steps out of line, get’s lazy, misapplies a rule or does something to harm the integrity of the crew, the situation is usually handled in house by the crew.

A Good Official: A person who only calls fouls that are big & obvious and that have an impact; a person who remembers that the fans don't go to the game to watch them officiate; a person who physically and mentally prepares for each game regardless of the teams and location of the game; one who is a student of the rules and mechanics; and a person who acts professional on and off of the field.

As I have said many times before, and I don't have an axe to grind with Dixie, it starts at the top.

Honestly, I think that it could have been worse than it was! Dixie is lucky it scored.

I don't have an axe to grind with Dixie. I'm a big fan of many of the athletic programs at the school. I'm just tired of the mediocrity of the football program. Nonetheless, I wish the best for all of the the players, many of whom I know very, very well. They just can't "compete" with Highlands. 375 points vs 105 points scored over 10 years says it all.

Congrats to the Dixie Lady Colonels Soccer team (8-4-5) for the fund raising event that they had this past weekend for Jessie Russo, the former soccer player at NDA who was seriously injured the a car wreck earlier this year. The proceeds that were raised by the team will be presented to the Russo Fund this Saturday before the varsity game between Dixie and Notre Dame (11-7-0). It was a great event for a great casue. Nice job ladies! :thumb:
