A very cold evening for baseball but it was good to see the boys on the field for the first time this year after both scrimmages were rained out. Phillips started for Cooper and went 2 innings. Bjurquist followed with 2 innings and Brownfield threw 1. The defense was solid and everyone seemed to contribute offensively and they were helped by several walks, errors and hit batsmen from Newport. Newport scored one in the first on 4 straight walks after two were out. I thought several pitches were very close and the ump seemed to widen the strike zone after the first just a bit and did a nice job. The other three runs were scored in the fifth. Next up for the Jag's is at Conner on Saturday.

Saturday, I hear Cooper has Walton and Highlands at Cooper starting at noon.

If you can throw 90 in NKY, you don't need anything else, but overall give me a pitcher that throws strikes and changes speed.

This is exactly how Cooper's administration has it done. They meet after school and EVERY kid is spoken to. The one's that make it are told what their role will be at this point in time and what to expect. The one's that don't are told what they need to improve on. This is the first year where over 20 kids were cut at all three levels. I was there to pick up my kid and I watched some of the kids walk out slowly dragging their feet and others running toward their parents as happy as can be. It is a tough, but necessary day. I hate lists and would take the e-mail in the evening before a list in the morning before school.

If it was done quickly while the excitment from their fans is still high, it could be a great fundraiser for Dixie and even NCC. I wouldn't buy it personally as it's not my team but the student body and alumni from the two schools could sell quite a few and I would say $10 a copy would be fair.

Wow, what a great game. Why in the world does Dixie shoot so quick when they have a 6 point or bigger lead and under 2 minutes left. They also took quick shots while up 11 in the 4th. I'm a fan of fouling with less than 10 seconds left and up 3 as well. Congrats to both teams on a great game. Good luck Dixie at Rupp.

Cooper's baseball field is maintained by a volunteer, Howie Whitaker. The infield is nearly perfect and they added "walkways" to homeplate this off season. The only problem is the outfield is still a little rough. Hopefully the batting cages will get in this year as planned.

You may be correct. It's hard to say really as Jared has thrown about 10 inning's the last two years due to injuries and AJ was not used in High School but did throw some in summer ball. I think both were clocked at 79 mph last August during the Col's tryouts and both are much stronger this Spring. As Oldtimeballer says, it doesn't matter how hard you throw, can you "pitch".

Yes, Bob Bieger is still the coach and has put together a great off season program and this will be his strongest team yet. Not sure if it will be enough to do damage in a strong 33rd District, but time will tell. They lost two solid Senior's from last years team but everyone else returns and most will be playing their 3rd year of varsity.

AJ Collins and Jared Blank are the two Soph's and they both will play for the Ky Col's this Summer.

I agree completely. This will at least be the first year in the three Cooper has played that they will have any quality depth on the mound at all to speak of, so it's a start. They lost several games last year when leading after 4 or 5 and not able to close the deal.

The two Soph's have played varsity since 8th grade (Cooper's first year) and the Frosh was JV last year and will be Varsity this year. Cooper actually won some games last year. I believe they were around a .500 team. The schedule is tougher this year which is good. The talent is improving each year and over 70 kids were at tryouts for the 3 teams.

I was a very unbiased person in the crowd last night and I didn't see any calls that were blatantly wrong. If anything #25 for Ryle should have fouled out within two minutes the way she beat on Moss up and down the court. I don't know how Moss kept her cool. Eventually she started giving a little back. I guess Moss just handled it by demanding the ball down low and scoring at will. I think if they meet again it will be a barn burner though as both teams have solid players throughout the line-up.

I spoke with his father and he said he is not currently playing with anyone. I will have him get an account and PM you.

Let's just say he has trouble with his mouth, but it's not an injury.

I seem to remember Courtney throwing a lot early in last season and was dominant but started to falter a little more towards the end of the season when his inning's built up. Cov Cath has them early which will make it a very tough game IMO.

Remember it's pre season. Every team has at least one kid in NKY that throws 90. We hear it every year.

I agree. He has power but routine fly balls at most places are in the trees at Boone. Laumann and Hempel are both candidates for sure.

Don't forget Teegarden from Boone. He beat Dixie in the Region finals and I think was District and Region MVP. He will be a strong candidate anyway.

Just saying it may be an old document and their seeding rules changed when Cooper took their place.

The sheet you show has St. Henry as a member of the 33rd. Of Course, they have been replaced with Cooper.

Unless Cooper figures out how to handle the press better than they did last night, it will be atleast a 15 point loss. I hope they figure it out though.
