  1. It hasn't been all that long ago that there was one of our Harlan County teams that did "dominate" in baseball for years and years and years. This includes beating Laurel County, Corbin, Whitley, Middlesboro, Clay, Bell, etc.....year in and year out. It's not that far fetched to think that it can happen again. The Bears will contend for regional championships in the very near future. They will be competitive now. You can have your opinon. We love our Black Bears! :ylsuper:
  2. TJ has done whatever has been asked of him and it will be nice to see the ball in his hands this year RUNNING like we all know that he can. I believe Jamie is gonna be a leader this year, he'll be vocal and lead by example as well. James Phillips is gonna be a handful for anybody who gets in his way, he is HUGE! The team got a little taste of success this past season and I believe they are hungry for it this year. I'm amazed at how physically bigger these kids have gotten from the weight program this winter. The Black Bear Nation is gonna have lots to cheer about this season! :thumb:
  3. I hear that the guys are looking good at Spring practice!!!
  4. The Harlan County Black Bears will be in the run and will make themselves known as one of the best teams in the 13th.
  5. Looks like two tough games to start the season off with. Was Wagner a senior this year?
  6. Larkey VS Larkey (October 9th) should make for a fun game. Football season can't get here soon enough. My boys and their father can't even go fishing without it becoming a full blown competiton. I can imagine there would have to be a little bit of "smack talk" leading up to this game between the two. Mama Larkey will be the winner either way it goes. :thumb:
  7. Congrats to Middlesboro and to Brown for a fantastic game! WOW! I didn't get to attend this game, but listened to it on the radio. What happened to the Bears the 2nd half? It sounded like that in the first half, they were getting the ball to the post and if they collapsed, the guards were getting the shots. Why didn't they continue to throw the ball down low the 2nd half? Did Middlesboro change up their defense?
  8. I just got home from Church and caught the end of this one on the radio!!!!!!!!!! Bears by 1 in a barn burner!!!!!!!!!
  9. New Elliot Co. fan here!!! Great article! Louisville Hawpe can put this one in his pipe and smoke it! Success breeds success. Best of luck to the Lions of Elliot County!
  10. Are you nuts?! Apollo Creed didn't teach Rocky all he knew! Coach Larkey's got that one play that he has kept all to himself! I'm worried about Mama Larkey. She told me that somebody would just have to forfeit. She didn't know what she was going to do.
  11. He got you on that one Lungbuster. Best of luck to Coach Luttrell and Estill Co. Maybe he will continue to use one of Cawood High School's former standouts as an assistant. I hear he has done very well at Estill Co.
  12. I knew it was Evarts but can't see the faces too good. Can you make the picture a little larger to see if we can recognize anybody?
  13. Maybe he came into this world with a clip board and a whistle in his mouth. Seriously though, someone did have to give him a chance and I hope that folks will afford Coach Chris Larkey the same.
  14. :notworthy: I stand corrected.
  15. I read where he was an assistant coach for Rockcastle Co. for 18 years. Don't most head coaches start out as assistants? I bet even Coach Hilton didn't immerge from his mother's womb as a head coach. They have to start somehwere and gain experience. Every head coach has to have that first year as a head coach. I also read that North Laurel's won 9 games since 2005. Give the guy a chance! Is there a stigma because he was an assistant or that he was an assistant to his dad?
  16. I thought that our pass coverage really picked up toward the end of the season. The kids are going to be even more comfortable with the defense this year and we'll have some experienced boys out there. The defense made some big plays for us last year and I think we can expect to see more confidence on the field as the kids adapt.
  17. Here's a better look at our schedule. Aug. 28 vs Southwestern (at Somerset) Sept. 4 Lee, Va. Sept. 11 at Leslie County Sept. 18 Powell Valley, Va. Sept. 25 at Whitley County Oct. 2 Letcher Central Oct. 9 North Laurel Oct. 16 Perry Central Oct. 23 at Clay County Oct. 30 at Bell County
  18. Thanks to the Harlan Daily Enterprise for this article to help us get through these cold winter days. http://www.harlandaily.com/pages/full_story?page_label=news_sports&id=1883797-FROM-THE-SIDELINES-Peaking-ahead-to-football-in-the-season-for-hoops&article-FROM-THE-SIDELINES-Peaking-ahead-to-football-in-the-season-for-hoops%20=&widget=push&instance=lead_story_left_column&open=&
  19. :thumb: I'm right there with ya. In regard to Harlan County, it looks like we may have even more kids than last year, IF they will all stick with it. We are still very excited here! Coach Larkey and his staff will have a full year to develop and build on what we had last year. We lost some very good seniors, but it looks like we will have some boys ready to step right in and fill those positions. They are working hard right now! They are getting stronger and bonding in the weight room. I just wish Spring would hurry up and get here. I'm ready to see the Bears come out of their cave!
  20. Lt. Col. John Luttrell served our country in Iraq with the rest of "The Mountian Warriors". Google that and I am sure you'll find some good newspaper articles about him.
  21. Congrats! I'm sure his family is proud.
  22. I'm tickled for him and I'm sure his dad will be proud. I'd kinda thought that his boys would eventually come to Harlan County full time, but if this door is open, can't blame him. Best wishes! Larkey VS Larkey 2009 This one will be interesting!
  23. First of all, this is priceless... I tend to agree with Bayshore when he says the talent level is a little down from the past. I'd say this is just the normal course of things. Up some years, down others. The good news is that the talent pool has gotten much larger with the consolidation and the kids who really want to learn and play basketball have a golden opportunity with Harlan County's coaching staff. Mediocracy will not be accepted anymore. Also, county wide, the middle school teams look to have plenty of talent. The question is, will these kids be willing to do what's asked of them to reach their full potential? I also believe there are kids within the 52nd district who can play college basektball. I'm not talking about UK or UNC, but maybe Pikeville or Cumberland College. Basketball scholarships= money for an education. I still think we have that here, even within our county. If any of the boys can get a chance to go to college for free or a partial scholarship and get to play the game they love on the next level, I hope they'll sieze the opportunity.
