Welte and Sawyers are both excellent coaches and got a lot out of the kids the past 3 years. However, the track coach is recruiting like crazy all year long and is a teacher at the school. I have heard that the track team has 40 boys including the Schroth boy who was to be their ace this year. Meier did a good job of fending off the track team idea, but obviously the track team got started and is now dominating in recruitment. What a shame!

BTW, Bryan should end up leading the state in scoring average. He ended the season averaging 30.17 if you include his last 5 games. Jon Hood from Madisonville North Hopkins has the only chance to beat him. Hood scored 15 and 31 in his two games this week. If my calculations are correct, Hood needs to score 64 points in his regional game to average 30.20 and win the scoring title. If they play two more games, he would need 95 points for the two games. I think Bryan should win the scoring title given these scenarios.

I think the closest team Beechwood would compete against is St. Henry. That St. Henry has the better coach and therefore would pull it out. Beechwood loses by 10 to New Cath or Highlands and 15 to Boone.

I think Beechwood is done. No matter who they draw, they will be one and done in the Region. The nice season will come to an end. They can beat the other teams, but don't think they will in the region.

All the 8th graders except one will be attending Villa next year. So, that is a better ratio than previous years.

Well, trying to get back on topic, but also raising the middle schoool concern at the same time. Villa will be very young - 3 Seniors, 1 Junior, 1 Sophomore, 3 Freshman, and 6 8th graders. They had to recruit 8th graders or not have a team. Nice that the big schools have choices to cut, but small schools have to make due with what they can in order to even field a team sometimes. It is hard to believe that Villa won the 34th district just a few years ago, now struggle to field a team. They have a great coach who will get the most out of them and you better watch out in a few years when the younger boys get older.

Seems like every year we have the same sort of dialog about how teams could and maybe will upset Holmes and how great the tournament will be. Holmes has too much tournament experience and will be focused, easily winning the 9th again. Who knows, we may have a 9th region state champion. For that to happen, it better be Holmes who wins the 9th. No other team really has a legitimate shot to win state.

Holmes by 15 with Beechwood having a little let down following the Cov Cath game.

Beechwood is the best team in D III this year, but they don't have the best player in D III. That award has to go to Bryan. The award doesn't go to the best player on the best team, but the best player in the conference. I don't think that Beechwood was cheated last year either. The best player was Love, yet BW was the best team. I agree that Romes deserves Defensive player of the year.

Nick got fouled on the sideline and the players got tripped up. He took exception with a Villa player being late getting off of him. He got up and pushed a Villa player. The ref had to give him a technical after the push.

Great game to watch with a great atmosphere. It was a 5 point game with 6 minutes left before Beechwood took final control. Three technical fouls were called - both head coaches and Nick Hall. Bryan fouled out with a little more than 3 minutes left in the game. Beechwood held him in check all night.

Blake scores 30 in this one, but Villa drops it in a 10 point game.

Dixie is not very strong this year. Holmes by 19, closer than you would think but Holmes will call off the dogs early in the 3rd.

Don't you believe that in games like this the coach with the dominant team actually has control of the outcome, not the coach that is overmatched? I will agree that teams with this disperate of talent should not play each other. But, they played it, so the PRP coach should have controlled it.

Agreed a wide margin, but 95 points? It isn't the right thing to do and the coach could control it.

No matter who you put on the floor, as a coach you can control the winning margin without embarrassing the other team. I coached an 8th grade game last weekend, where my team overmatched the opponent and we won by 25 points. The coach of the other team actually thanked me after the game because the differential could have been 50+ in 6 minute quarters. I stopped all fast breaks, ran plays with my second string players who played almost the whole game. This slowed the game down. If PRP would have done that, no way they put that # of points up. At no point did I tell my team to not play hard nor be intense on defense, etc. You don't want to teach bad habits. But, you can control how the game is run when you are that dominant and you can do it without playing easy or missing shots on purpose, etc.

Usually the sign of a small school who has ebbs and flows of athletes that come through the school. There are always ways to keep the score to a much lesser differential while not patronizing the other team. Comments throughout this thread that states otherwise must be written by those who have not coached basketball.
