I do think the 50 point average is more impressive than Kobe's 81 point game.

I didn't realize that Wilt had 25 rebounds in the game.

The fact that Wilt hit 28/32 makes it all the more impressive. Not many 51% shooters will ever do that in a game. It was the perfect storm that night. The Knicks starting center was out and their next tallest guy was 6'7" and not very thick. The Knicks started to stall late in the game and the fans were booing them, Philadelphia started fouling and their guards did everything in their power to avoid the Knicks' defenders as they quickly passed the ball to the "Dipper".

 

NBA network had a one hour show titled "Wilt 100" that was narrated by Bill Russell. I believe they said Michael Jordan had 31 fifty point games during his career. Wilt did it close to 50 time in 1962. That is unreal.

So if we assume Wilt's 32 FTs were 16 2-shot fouls that means he attempted 79 shots IN ONE GAME.

To the original question. If we're talking about individual performances in a single game; Wilt's 100 has to be at or real close to the top of the list.

 

But there are other individual performances that should be in the discussion if we're not talking about one game. Michael Phelps and that boatload of 2008 Olympic gold medals has to be up there.

So if we assume Wilt's 32 FTs were 16 2-shot fouls that means he attempted 79 shots IN ONE GAME.

 

Speaking of FTs; how many are old enough to remember "3 to make 2"?

If you were there you were 1 of only 4124 as that was the attendance that night. I will say this though for some unremembered reason I actually was searching through the radio dial to find some sports that night and happened across the game. Wilt had somewhere around 80 pts at the time and I listened to the rest of the game to see what he would end up with. The amazing thing about this game was that he made 28-32 free throws, 87.5% and his career % was just 51%. A lot of people think that the game was a huge farce because he attempted 63 field goals, making 36 with 28 being dunks. Amazingly Wilt averaged a little over 50 pts and 27 rebounds that year and averaged 48 minutes a game and played all but 8 minutes of all the games and never fouled out. He once had 55 rebounds against Bill Russell but lost the game to the Celtics. He did some pretty amazing things in his career in a really different era of basketball.

He actually attempted 95. He was 36-63 from the field and 28-32 from the line.

This chart seals it for me and my opinion that Kobe's night was more impressive. That and knowing that the guy guarding Wilt was 6'7".

Although blocks were not an official stat then he had 26 blocks in 1 game against the Pistons

In 67-68 he told a teammate he was going to lead the NBA in assists that year and went out and did that.

He led the league in Minutes played per game 9 times.

In a 4 game stretch that year he went for 65,61,100 and 58 for a tidy 71PPG average.

19 points is a good game.

 

And that is how many points Kobe is still behind Wilt. To put it in Twitter speak, Wilt >>>>> Kobe.

 

Big O's triple double average for season is up there with Wilt's 50 ppg. And Oscar came close (.5 assist per game) short of doing a 2nd season (.5 rpg) short of doing a 3rd season.

 

In comparison, i think i saw that there has been a total of 11 trilpledoubles this season and Rondo has 5.
