I can assure all of you #12 for Highlands was not trying to hurt Bray. His exact words to me were "I was trying to grab him". He wasn't going to let him dunk period and I applaud him for that. After Bray flopped like a fish for 2 min he got up and jogged to midcourt. He obviously was fine.

 

People have to remember that in high school there are two ways to get an intentional foul which is what was called on Witte.

 

First, as the name implies, fouling someone by grabbing them from behind, wrapping your arms around them, grabbing their shirt on a breakout, etc. Not playing the ball.

Secondly, and the way Witte was nailed , was on a "hard foul." NOTE: Not "cheap foul" and not "dirty foul" but "hard foul." NFHS wants to protect airborne shooters for safety reasons. The rulebook says that to issue an intentional on a foul where the player was fouled hard and where it could have caused injury(not exact wording). Witte went for the ball but the contact caused the shooter to go hard to the ground. Not dirty or it would have been called flagrant and there would have been an ejection.

 

Clean play.

He had 13 pts and 9 of Brays pts were wide open 3's. PT was the stronger of the two but I wouldn't say beast.

 

And Towles was in the game and supposedly guarding him.

Main reason Birds struggled offensively is they were perimeter-oriented. PT could have scored more inside PLUS gotten Bray in foul trouble. HHS either wouldn't or couldn't get him the ball inside enough.

 

That would have led to Lloyd bringing help which makes the outside shots more open. B-ball 101 and I'm guessing it was part of the plan. It just wasn't executed.

What part of his game was "beast"???? He finished with maybe 9-11 points and a handful of rebounds, got dunked on, and gave up 26 to Bray (although all 26 were not on Towles, but a large majority was), not sure that falls into the "beast-mode" category.

 

A beast in the sense that he was physical and banged players in the paint throughout the game. I suspect a large part of what some have descibed as Bray's "drama" was a function of Towles' physicality. And, PT scored 1/3 of the Birds points.

Instructed to play off Bray behind the 3pt line. Played the prcentages and Bray won. Bray was 2-10 from field in last meeting and one was a putback flush so he was 1-9 essentially. Credit Bray he knocked em down and was player of the game.

It's my understanding that very few track schollies are full.

 

I do not think Bray has the ball skills to play a perimeter position at the D1 level. He does have D1 athletic ability though. If I'm Bezold I put a bug in his ear about walking on and POSSIBLY earning a scholarship down the road. The kid's out-of-pocket will not be more more than him going to a non-KY school for track on a partial.

I disagree. Except for Bray's play, that 1st half was as ugly a half of basketball that I have witnessed. 19-12 of poorly played ball is not my idea of entertaining.

 

I enjoyed the level of enthusiam Lloyd players, coaches and fans brought to the arena. Same can be said about Cooper on Wednesday. They were wired. :thumb: The Bluebirds played hard as well. To me that is the pinache of high school ball. While the game film may not be packaged up and sent to the Naismith Hall of Fame, I thoroughly enjoyed myself (much more than I would have if I had stayed home and watched the superior skills of the Miami Heat vs. Portland Trailblazers). Just one more thing was needed to complete the evening...more cowbell.

I don't know. Yeah they played hard, and I did appreciate Lloyds enthusiasm, sort of reminded of the Newport group from a couple of years ago. One aspect I noticed missing was no band prescence from either school. I just can't say that game was the "pinache" of high school basketball.

^ You are right malachi. Close game, interesting, exciting finish ... but well played .... uh ... no. Although I thought Lloyd played the the first quarter as well as I have seen them play in a game all year. After that, it was not pretty at all. Highlands had some moments on offense running some good sets and that is about it as for quality of play.

I found it interesting that when Bray was unable to shoot the FTs after the intentional foul, that Lloyd coach puts a kid on the line that I don't think had seen the floor at all. Airballed the 1st, but give the kid credit, he hit the 2nd.

He was getting abused all night...he carried himself better than any kid i have ever seen at the high school level...even tempered for having such great talent amd knowing no one on the court could stop him...

There is alot to comment on so let me get started:

1. Bray is a drama queen, he is on the floor more than he is standing up almost every game....we got used to that second week of the season

2. He has D 1 athletic ability but no where near D1 game at any position

3. In 2 games against Highlands I have not seen him commit one "hard foul" against anyone, but I have seen him take at least 2, now I understand nobody wants to let him get loose, dunk and have the crowd explode so I understand... I will also say that I didnt think that intentional was a dirty play last night at all, just a good hard foul.

4. I cant wait to see Towles playing QB at UK next year!!!!

I just want to be sure on the rule, the coach has to bring a kid off the bech to shoot those free throws right? That kid was Addison Brown, very good baseball player and a good shooter, looked like the moment got to him on the first one but he recovered well!

I didn't realize until after my previous post asking about the subbing for him that a trainer had come onto the floor.

 

At that point the coach has two options: replace him for the FTs with someone from the bench OR call a timeout to give Bray time to get ready to back on the floor and then shoot the FTs.

 

Did Coach Key have any TOs left?

 

Really happy for the kid who was put in a tough situation to hit the 2nd FTs.
