I don't recall Laura ever saying anything that was considered remotely controversial. I could be wrong. I kind of see Michelle in the same light as Barbara Bush, as far as their personalities go. A little bit more outspoken than others in their position. And I'm not saying that as a negative; just more as an observation. :thumb: I think it's completely within reason for the perception of Michelle Obama to be "less stellar" than that of Laura Bush for the reason you mention. I can't recall Laura ever making anything close to a controversial remark either. Has the far-right taken it to extremes with Michelle? Probably, but I can completely understand a harsher opinion of her than Mrs. Bush.

People with sense, to put it mildly. Not everyone in America, born an American, is named John Smith or Bill White. BTW...he was in Indonesia for four years. He was in the US for the other 14 years of his non-adult life. I always hear he is a socialist, not a communist. Then you haven't even read much here in P/R. We've got a couple posters that do it. His pastor probably did influence what he did. Be more specific.

Mrs. Obama did take a risk in her comments about beginning to feel proud to be an American. Many people misunderstood that comment and it was a step that she didn't have to take. Honestly, I admire her for it. Regardless, it did open her up to criticism. Mrs. Laura Bush did not do anything similar, but obviously she couldn't have made the same type of comment that Mrs. Obama did. However, Mrs. Laura Bush ranks very highly with me.
