So you're proud of slavery? You're proud that a black person was considered 2/3 of a person at one time by our government? You're proud of affirmative action? Wait, you're not proud of the current President or his cronies.....wouldn't that make you currently not proud of America? What I think she meant was and based on her essay she wrote at Princeton.

She has hated Amercia because she is black and she feels the white man has kept her down and never looked at blacks as equals. Which in certain aspects is true, but then again not all whites feel that way, I certainly do not, as I have many good friends who are black. So to use that as a reason to not be proud of America is bull. If you feel that way you are a racist and always will be because you will always have hatred for whites.

It does go both ways, there is plenty of white trash out there who never want to treat blacks as equals, I despise those also.

Those things never happened in my time or yours. My parents embarrassed me, but I was always proud of them. My country has done some embarassing things, but I'm proud to be an American.

I think she was speaking more to the fact that a black man(her husband) was elected to the POTUS. Something 99.9% of black people never thought would happen in our lifetime. To see Barack Obama ascend to the most powerful position in the free world is something that helps to erase the sting of what was once an extremely rocky past between black and white Americans. Whether you like Barack Obama or not he is someone that all Americans should be proud of and someone we all can say we saw make a change for the better of our country.

I am not a fan of President Obama or many (almost all) of his policies, but I have an enormous amount of pride and respect in the man. He seems to a very "cool" guy. I disagree with him politically, but that's okay. He's doing what he truly feels is in the best interest of the country. We just have differing views on what that is.

 

I think it's fairly obvious she was saying that she was proud that our country had gotten to the point that skin color truly isn't an obstacle that can't be overcome. The election of an African-American gave hope to all people that they can reach their dreams and that anything is possible regardless of race, sex, etc.

I frankly don't understand conservative's fascination/hatred of Michelle Obama.

I have a fascination with Michelle Obama, but I think we may be talking about different things.

Her thesis was based on a survey she did with black alums of Princeton. She found that their attitudes and experiences were different than hers in 1985. She never once mentioned anything about whites keeping her down. In fact, she says that the difference in time (70s vs 1985) have shown that the acceptance issue on Princeton's campus had changed dramatically. She did say that there was the feeling that despite it getting better that there would always be some who view the Princeton blacks as "lesser." Hardly breaking news even in 2012.

 

You do not know what her thesis said and you haven't fully grasped what her words, albeit not well used, were meaning in her "proud" comment.

Michelle fits the stereotypical and aged white guy viewpoint of an "an angry black woman." Period.

No I don't have proof, only the hundreds of people I talk to weekly say they can't afford to travel on vacations. These people are factory workers, school teachers, private business owners, etc.

I'm your average joe and I took probably 6-10 vacations last year. Already have taken one this year and have several more in the planning stages.

 

I'm also single, have no children, don't own a home, and drive a vehicle that's paid for. I make adjustments in other areas of my life to do what I like to do the most, travel.

It is getting close to Spring, I guess a trip to Paris in the Spring is coming up.

 

Here is what she said:

“People in this country are ready for change and hungry for a different kind of politics and … for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback.”

My only question is when are we going to see this "different kind of politics" she mentioned?
