ESPN Article on Mike Brown

Featured Replies

I have spoke w Dave Lapham about this and came away w an entirely different take on Brown. I think that he is not the greedy miser that I took him for. He is an incredible negotiator, shrewd business man, stubborn old fool, and out of his element running the personnel dept as a defacto GM. I honestly believe that he did this this week for the players and wanting them to have a full house. The ticket prices will go right back up if the team sustains success next year. I feel that he cares about the players and coaches, but couldn't care less about the fans.

For your last sentence. We all have witnessed MANY blackouts by the Bengals since Mike Brown has been the owner, especially during the 90's and early 2000's. We saw a lot of blackouts during this season too. So you all are saying the only reason he is doing this is for selfish reasons. Well if that is the case, then he would have done this many more times through the years. And maybe I am wrong, but I don't believe he has done this before has he? Even during the bad days of the 90's when the Bengals were awful, he still did nothing to try to get fans in the stadium, however you would think he would have based on what you all are saying. People say Mike Brown is all about making money, and actually is a good business man. So he would have been doing things like this all the time if helped him make even more money. Do you see how this goes against everything you all are saying?

It would have made even more sense to do this for a game that was not as important. This game might not have sold out, but probably would have came close since this game meant so much. So why pick this game? Yes it will help him make money, but guess what he has not done this in the past. So it's not hard to see that for once he is doing what many other owners have probably always done. And that is actually doing something to get the fans in the stadium, and most important giving the team a little better chance to win.

FC, your business sense is off.

Why didn't he do this for a game like, say, San Francisco or any other game? This game is getting national pub and he did not want to be embarrassed by having so many empty seats for a game that determines if his team goes to the playoffs. Trust me. If this game was not being televised he would not be doing this.

This is 100% business and I'm 100% cool with it.

This has nothing to do with the fans.

He's dropping prices on seats he has sold only once all year. Is that hard to figure out ? Really...

Good business move. Make people think you care and sell a ton of $8 beers. Nothing to see here and has zero bearing on the horrible decisions in the past and horrible decisions in the future.

My only comment on this thread is about the $8 beers. Every stadium in the country sells beer at or above this price. I hear the same thing at Riverbend every summer. People complaining about a $7.50 beer (that is actually 8 more ounces than those at PBS or GABP) most cities sell it at a higher price.

Sorry irrelevant to the topic but something that gets on my nerves around here. Saw an article once that said the three drunkest cities in America were St. Louis, Milwaukee, and Cincinnati. Maybe thats why people complain.

Good Lord, how much are beers at the Reds game or any other professional sports venue? People will beat on Mike about anything.

No one complained about the price of beer. Point was that someone at home isn't purchasing concessions but fill that seat, even for free, and they are.

I could be wrong but the main game that is going to be on most tv's across the nation is the Broncos/Chiefs game. That is why the #1 CBS team is going to be at that game. So basically the only people seeing the game will be the people in the Cincinnati Market and Baltimore markets. You also have Pitt/Cleveland at 415 and Oakland/San Diego at 415. So even though I admit I am not the smartest guy when it comes to what area's will have games. However I am pretty sure only the same area's will be getting this game as normal. Nothing has changed about that, so it's not like people nation wide will be seeing this game. So once again there really was not much reason for him to choose to do that for this game, and you seem to not realize that this game would have probably came close to selling out even without having to do that. More Bengal fans than normal this year would have came, and you would have had some Ravens fans too. Your argument is just way off base on this one, if your all's argument was true he would have done this many more times since he has been owner. As I said before there are many things people can complain and say how Mike Brown is selfish and only cares about himself, but this is not one of those cases. He actually did something that is helping out the fans, and also helping out the team by doing that.

Mike has also seen the light on the corner upper level seat prices. It's nice to make them make them much more affordable in this economy. The tickets will be reduced to $40. There will be an increase in upper level season ticket sales at the $40 price level.

No one complained about the price of beer. Point was that someone at home isn't purchasing concessions but fill that seat, even for free, and they are.

You are correct in your understanding of CBS. However, you are incorrect that people will not notice a lot of empty seats. It will be mentioned everywhere - ESPN, CBS, Twitter. It would be a black eye.

Again, this is not him playing Santa Claus.

It's already mentioned every time the Bengals play. Most every Bengals article or story on ESPN or preview about the game mentions how it is another blackout for Cincinnati. During highlights of past games they show how empty the stadium is, there being empty seats has been shown all year long! It's not like it was just local news, it is something that has been talked about on tv, and on national websites like ESPN. The Bengals have been having a winning season all year, yet in no other games did Mike Brown try to prevent that to stop from being embarrassed about not having people there even though he had a good team this year. The one game they sold out was Pittsburgh and it was for first place and had lots of visiting fans come too. Guess what this game is for the playoffs, so more people would have came and this Raven fans would have came too. The stadium would have been a sell out or darn near close to it. Then if it didn't sell out in time, then the walk up crowd probably would have filled the stadium to see the game.

This was not a game he had to do this. It makes no sense for people to also say things about him for this too. Because at the end of the day no matter if I was right or if you were right. He actually did something that was good for the fans, and also for his team to help them win. So what was the point for people to even say anything at all, and still put him down for something that turned out very good. Complain about something with him that is valid and worth to complain about. There is plenty to choose from over the years haha.

This is all about marketing, selling more seats and holding onto the season ticket holders he has. That is why he offered the deal to his season ticket holders and not the general public. If he was truly doing this for the fans, he would have opened up the sales to anyone instead of just season ticket holders. It is a good move by Brown. But it is a business move.

I can agree with that. It probably is a business move, however it still is a business move he never has made. No matter how bad the crowds were or how embarrassing it would be nation wide he never has. So yes this move helps him, but since he has never done this before. You have to think for once he actually was doing something to help either fans out, his team out, or both. So that is my point, no matter what the reasoning is. It is silly for people to still complain about him for this move too. It's actually a move that was good for the team and the city for once. Good for the people who bought into the team all year long in the season ticket holders.

What's the Bengal's record under the leadership of Mike Brown?

What's the Bengal's record under the leadership of Mike Brown?

Zero playoff wins and well below .500.
