UC Announces Suspensions

Featured Replies

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati today announced the suspension of four men’s basketball student-athletes for their participation in a fight that brought a premature end to Saturday’s game at Xavier University.

Yancy Gates, Octavius Ellis and Cheikh Mbodj will each be suspended for a total of six games and Ge’Lawn Guyn for one game. The suspensions will take effect immediately and will be concurrent with the NCAA-standard one-game mandated suspensions that would be applied to Gates and Mbodj for ejections from the game for fighting.

“After reviewing all available video and giving due deliberation to the seriousness of this behavior, we have decided to take these actions,” said UC athletic director Whit Babcock. “We want to deal with this in a prompt and direct manner and send the message that we will not tolerate this from those who have the privilege of representing the University of Cincinnati.

“We have advised the BIG EAST Conference of our decision and the measures we’re taking. I’m thankful for the full support of (UC) President (Gregory H.) Williams and (UC men’s basketball head coach) Mick Cronin.

“Further, I want to apologize to our students, alumni, faculty and staff, as well as to our fans and community. We hold our student-athletes to a very high standard and take very seriously the role that our entire department plays in reflecting the overall image of this great university. We will continue to work diligently to represent the Bearcat family and the Cincinnati community in a first-class manner. There will be zero tolerance for a repeat of this behavior.”

So basically a five-game suspension plus the one game league mandated suspension.

Correct. Feel it should have been 10 games for Gates personally...

Statement from conference...

BIG EAST: " The Univ. of Cincinnati has responded with swift, expeditious and appropriate action, which The BIG EAST Conf. fully supports."

I don't agree with only 6 games for Gates that's for sure.

No back bone. I have lost what little respest I may have had for Cronin and the whole UC program. They are an utter joke from top to bottom. Anyone supporting this program is getting exactly what they deserve.

Way too light...

Way too light...

Glad you see it that way. Hopefully The Big O, or Wyler intervene for what is right.

You say UC has no back bone but at least they have taken responsibility unlike Xavier. Chris Mack and the AD of XU have said they will just let the conference handle it. While Gates should be suspended longer if not removed from the team, Cincinnati has at least done something. Xavier has no back bone as of now.

I could tell that he was backing away from his comments in his postgame press conference when I read the Katz article this morning. Not nearly enough games for Gates and Mbodj.

We're talking about UC here. I will weigh in on X when or if any thing is done on their end.

Way too light. Should be at least 10 games. Gates got lucky again.

Maybe it's light when you compare it to an incident like Blount's incident in football where he missed the rest of the season but in the grand scheme six games is pretty solid IMO. Especially for UC right now where every game is going to help try to get them into the tourney. Started out in the top 25, things have been downhill since. They drop a handful of games to some sub par competition because you have guys out 10+ games your tourney resume may as well go in the trash. UC need's their guys to make a run, they can't really afford to lose them for one game much less six. I'm just they done the right thing and gave them some sort of heavy game suspension without having to wait for the BEAST to intervene. Gates may have been out of line with the punches but given the circumstances it's easy to see how you could lose control of yourself. We see it all the time in baseball, benches clear guys throw punches, guys get hit, guys sit for a couple games and lose some money, nothing more, nothing less. I equate this to be about the same thing.

Six games = one conference game. Back in time for Notre Dame on Jan. 4.
