Maybe it's light when you compare it to an incident like Blount's incident in football where he missed the rest of the season but in the grand scheme six games is pretty solid IMO. Especially for UC right now where every game is going to help try to get them into the tourney. Started out in the top 25, things have been downhill since. They drop a handful of games to some sub par competition because you have guys out 10+ games your tourney resume may as well go in the trash. UC need's their guys to make a run, they can't really afford to lose them for one game much less six. I'm just they done the right thing and gave them some sort of heavy game suspension without having to wait for the BEAST to intervene. Gates may have been out of line with the punches but given the circumstances it's easy to see how you could lose control of yourself. We see it all the time in baseball, benches clear guys throw punches, guys get hit, guys sit for a couple games and lose some money, nothing more, nothing less. I equate this to be about the same thing.

They, UC, should have realized that their season is waisted now. Should have tossed a few off the team and gained a little respect from the season. Now they have nothing. A losing season with a disgraceful team and no respect. Realizing the season is over anyway they could have recovered from the'' insert a backbone surguery'' that they should have had optioned for with some respect. Now they just look stupid. Dont worry the same morons will suport them.

I thought the Gates suspension should have been a few more games, but ultimately do you give him a longer punishment because what he did was caught on camera and because his punch landed? Ellis landed at least 2 punches and Mbodj had the stomp. All were deemed equal by the UC brass, and thus the suspensions were the same. Watch what happens in Norwood at 4:15 to see how you handle things as poorly as possible all the way around...

The thing about being on camera is important. It doesn't make the actions any worse, but does mean they are wholly verifiable and you don't have to solely use statements and interpretations of sometimes-unreliable and biased witnesses. Trust me, go into court sometime with eyewitness testimony only. While still compelling, you show a jury videotape and they see it for their own eyes and it's huge. Are Ellis' punches on tape?

The problem I have with Gates is that he has been a problem child in the past. Just like a defendent's past criminal history affects his sentencing, I think this should have been factored in and that alone should have elevated Gate's discipline above the others.

You say UC has no back bone but at least they have taken responsibility unlike Xavier. Chris Mack and the AD of XU have said they will just let the conference handle it. While Gates should be suspended longer if not removed from the team, Cincinnati has at least done something. Xavier has no back bone as of now.

Because UC announced their suspensions first???

Way too light. Should be at least 10 games. Gates got lucky again.

He'll get his evenutally, we'll see if he lasts the whole season.

I'm not overwhelmed. Public apologies and community service seem a disingenuous way to enable UC to lessen the number of games they (specifically, Gates) sit out. That was going to happen no matter what the suspension was. Mick can imply they still won't come back after the suspension until he's convinced they've fully learned from their mistake and the value of playing at UC, but let's be realistic - they are coming back after six games. Whether this was more Cronin's doing or someone with the administration, UC screwed this one up after doing and saying all the right things yesterday.

Cronin is a gutless coward....All that tough talk was simply for the camera. He's a joke.

No, rather because Xavier said they wanted to defer to the A10. Now that they have at least announced their own suspensions, I will put them in the same boat as UC. They both have take some responsibility and handed out suspensions. I feel both teams could have been more strict but they have done something at least.

Well it's not really as though they had an option not to do something. The "something" that they did do was underwhleming, to say the least.

They did have the option of deferring to the A10 like they said they would yesterday. I'm glad they didn't take that route.

Winning is a drug!

Empty rhetoric by Cronin.

All of college basketball is laughing at these suspensions.

Suspension length is OK. Not really the issue.

The issue is Mick backed himself into a corner saying he would decide what type of players he was going to allow to be ON THE TEAM based on their actions. He said a kid that stomped on a bloodied player is acceptable character.

Again, lessons learned all around. Mick should never have gotten behind the mic if he wasn't prepared to think things through.

It sounded to me like he was trying to sell his new AD.

Gates is too short. You'll be in the vast minority if you feel it's appropriate. Actually, you might be the only one to think that. :p

I'm going to believe Cronin's comments at the time were sincere, not duplicitous or contrived, and truly came from the heart. To me anyways, there was nothing about his statements that didn't appear genuine.

Believing such, I now have to reconcile why the punishment did not fit his statements. He was either persuaded by those above him or the outlook of a miserable season becoming more miserable and potentially affecting his job security. If the latter, a true shame and the definition of selling out.
