I am so glad there was no internet, FB or cell phones when I was in high school. There's no proof of my past stupidity, except by extrapolating my current stupidity.

I think the part that I struggle with is do catholic schools (not just Cov. Cath, but all catholic schools) have a real mission that they are trying to fulfill or have they just turned into simply an alternative to public eduction for the more affluent in society. They were all certainly founded upon a mission, but is it still a core value. I know that kids will be kids, and they all mess up and do stupid things, but when you see something like this it does refect on the school and their overarching or more lofty mission.

Great question. The mission certainly hasn't changed but the reason parents pay $6k to $12k per year certainly has. I have no doubt that some parents send their kids to religious-based schools for the religion aspect. However, I think many and by that I mean a large number do it for perceived academic advantages. And before anyone challenges me on that just look around your parish on Sunday and see how many families with kids you actually see. I know a lot of families and I know a lot that I never see so that religion thing isn't first and foremost for many.

 

Next, some will choose the school for athletic purposes.

I have no problem with that thinking as long as the people are honest about it.

 

I will refrain from posting that many of the the kids at these schools would get comparable if not better educations at some public schools.

I went to public school, but a quality and faith-based education is the only reason parents send their children to Catholic school -- the first being the most important. And the advantages are not "perceived" by any stretch of the imagination.

College vs High School definitely makes it different. The UK student is an adult, the H.S. kids most likely isn't.

 

For the record, I'd just object to it's lack of creativity. If it was something like the WKU example Jim Schue shares then I'd be ok with it at the college level for sure. Probably not at the high school level though.

High school kids still drink and smoke pot and some of them post pictures of them holding beer bottles and cigarettes. I would be more worried about the 16 and 17 year old girls that post pictures of themselves with hardly anything on than I would be about a four letter word.

It's a hate crime, so ya the FBI often times does get involved in investigating hate crimes. You said it was Highlands, so did they discover it was the entire administration, the PTA, or just a couple of angry coach's?:idunno:

NONE of the above needs to be any kids' account. I police for all! I saw a picture of a really nice girl with a beer in her hand. I called her attention to it, stating that a picture like that can undermine all her hard work to get that 4.0 and that awesome ACT score. She never thought of that and was grateful and removed the picture.

Bottom line: People judge and people are judged. Protect yourself and don't give anyone any reason to perceive you in any way that you may not want to be perceived.

I read a stat that over 60% of employers now do a search of social media before offering any type of job to someone.
