Why did Highlands?

Featured Replies

On about the third or fourth to last offensive series for the Birds (before the safety) Highlands threw the ball three straight plays. Anyone know why?

Trying to get a first down?

By stopping the clock three straight plays with bad field position at the end of the game!?

Dumb dumb dumb????? I couldn't believe it!!

I was asking the same question, guru. Just don't get it. And then he called time out w/ 11 seconds left when all they had to do was take a knee. What the...?

^ maybe to savor the victory!

I was watching, but not listening, to the game online so when the time out was called I was miffed too.

Either way, it is extremely hard to be critical of Coach Mueller because he is so good at what he does but tonight left me scratching my head so I was hoping someone could help a brother out but instead most Bird fans think humor is the best course of action.

There was just over 5 min. left when HHS gets possession. Conventional wisdom is that you run it, get a few fist downs and eat up the clock. That's what Guru thinks, and others seem to agree. Elder thought the same thing and put eight in the box tight to the line of scrimmage. Dale calls the play from the sideline, and seeing a matchup that he likes, calls a pass play. Two of the passes were to wide open receivers, but they were not caught. Now Dale is an idiot who has no idea what he is doing. One of those passes gets caught and he is a brilliant tactition.

Dale has about 250 high school wins as a head coach. Few on here have ever coached so much as a little league game. Dale has 9 state championships. .........

^ True dat! He also has a Russell Athletic National Coach of the Year Award sitting on the mantle...

In case you hadn't noticed, we'd been having some difficulties with the punting game due to the starting long snapper getting injured. My guess is that Dale thought the greatest priority was trying to get the ball out from deep in our territory; that Dale believed pass plays at that point provided the best changes of getting a first down; and that getting a first was a higher priority than being concerned with the clock stopping if a pass was incomplete. There was too much time left on the clock at that point in the time to be worried about not stopping the clock. Execute the plays and don't worry about the clock not stopping.
