September 21, 201115 yr Im really curious to why they haven't made strides to adding a football team to the University. Would or would this not be beneficial? It would cost NKU a ton of money to start a credible program, with equipment, recruiting, coaching, all the various costs associated with a football program. With the economy as it is, it would be a difficut sell for the administration to request $3 million to start football when the rest of the state's institutions of higher learning are cutting back. And then, it would throw out the equilibrium of Title 9 spending that they must have reached between their men's and women's programs. Lastly, to your question, what benefit could this possibly give the university that they want or need?
September 21, 201115 yr I agree with BGBird what benefit would it make. NKU should have started a football program a year before Thomas More did and they were talking about it then. NKU missed the boat, train or whatever you want to say on this program. JD
September 21, 201115 yr I've always wondered why they don't have a program. It seems odd that a school the size of NKU doesn't have one.
September 21, 201115 yr $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Other then the really big programs college football is a money loser.
September 21, 201115 yr I think of Grand Valley State (yes, Brian Kelly coached there) in Michigan as a dominant smaller school and it took them a long time to get there. Plus, NKU has D1 aspirations and that is why they built the arena. Would they be willing to muddle in anything other than D1 football? Probably not. Look what happened to Xavier. They could not support a football program and it folded in the 70's. They continue to be a succesful D1 basketball program and the only mention of football on Victory Parkway is a t-shirt that says "Xavier Football.......undefeated since 1973". Classic.
September 21, 201115 yr They would be an instant dominate D2 school, would make money back quickly How do you figure? I have to admit, I am not familiar with too many D2 schools, and I don't think there are very many in the midwest, so maybe the level of competition isn't there. But, from what I have seen at the local D3 level, it takes a while to buid a successful program. So, what makes you so sure that NKU would dominate?

Lastly, to your question, what benefit could this possibly give the university that they want or need? $3 million? Ya right they'd need way way more than that. Heck they would need more than that just to build a place to play with enough parking as well. Not to mention NKU is going D1 and scholarships don't just come out of no where. I'd say a scholarship for a football player, living on campus, including room and board would cost some where around $15,000-20,000 and that's a low ball figure.
September 21, 201115 yr Just because they go D1 in basketball does not mean they have to go D1 in football. EKU is D1 basketball, D1AA (I don't know what they call it these days) football. That said, I agree with others - NKU would get no benefit from it. Besides, they already have a football team on campus - The Northern Kentucky River Monsters!!!!

Actually there are plent of D2 football programs that would be accesible to NKU. Closest would be Ohio Dominican in Columbus, next U of Indianapolis. Doesn't matter though, they will be D1, and the lowest football would be what Dayton, Morehead and EKU are in. D1 FBS? something like that.

Lastly, to your question, what benefit could this possibly give the university that they want or need? There really doesn't need to be much more discussion than this post. Being an NKU alumni, as well as someone who was extremely involved in campus (including Student Governemnt) I can say that I don't think NKU will see a football team any time soon, nor do I see there being any desire for one from the administration. Would a football team be more fun? Sure, I would have loved to tailgate and day drink on Saturdays (did that anyway). But at the end of the day, it just isn't worth it and quite frankly, I don't feel it would get enough support from the surrounding community to come even remotely close to turning a profit. Making the move to Division 1 is a big enough of a change for now.
September 21, 201115 yr NKU needs football added to their institution......builds character and in a rich football community.....
September 21, 201115 yr Would NKU be able to beat Highlands? :-D If they got the right coach, maybe in a few years.
