NKU and starting a football program

Featured Replies

There really doesn't need to be much more discussion than this post. Being an NKU alumni, as well as someone who was extremely involved in campus (including Student Governemnt) I can say that I don't think NKU will see a football team any time soon, nor do I see there being any desire for one from the administration. Would a football team be more fun? Sure, I would have loved to tailgate and day drink on Saturdays (did that anyway). But at the end of the day, it just isn't worth it and quite frankly, I don't feel it would get enough support from the surrounding community to come even remotely close to turning a profit.

Making the move to Division 1 is a big enough of a change for now.

Ya the only way that would happen is if you got a GROUP of extremely wealthy people that wanted to bring football to NKU. Maybe in 15-20 years when NKU has established some more wealthy alumni but no time soon.

Want to talk about a classic shirt---NKU Football....Undefeated since 1968.

Actually there are plent of D2 football programs that would be accesible to NKU. Closest would be Ohio Dominican in Columbus, next U of Indianapolis. Doesn't matter though, they will be D1, and the lowest football would be what Dayton, Morehead and EKU are in. D1 FBS? something like that.

EKU is in the normal I-AA, also known as FCS. They have scholarships. Dayton and Morehead are in I-AA as well, but both play in the Pioneer League, in which none of the schools offer athletic scholarships for football. As such, the conference does not have an automatic qualifying bid to the I-AA playoffs, but I think the University of San Diego recently did get invited on the merits of their season alone. As Dayton simply can't make the investment for football scholarships, I'd love it if more schools would join the non-scholarship division. Maybe we could find a way to play for our own championship.

They would be an instant dominate D2 school, would make money back quickly

No they wouldn't.

I think it could be a great thing for the college. Look at Lindsey Wilson College, they just started football 2 years ago and the college has grown so much and attracted students that normally wouldn't have looked at it. I think NKU would be appealing for football players across the state and in Ohio.

N.K.U. does not enjoy a cadre of well healed Alumni willing to contribute the big bucks necessary to start a program. I would like to see an "Enabling Committee" with Lucas as Chairman , appointed to study the question. Maybe selling naming rights to the staduims (How does Bill Gates Stadium sound) combined with some big donors (I have been wrong before) would be enough to get it started. The post about 20K per year ,per player, in lost revenue does more to prove the poster missed a class when they discussed marginal cost than to shed light. Perhaps they could start with 30 scholarships and the revenue added by walk-ons who want to continue their playing days would help. I just hate to see the idea dismissed without some testing of the negative assumptions.
